For untold years, Vartox was a champion of justice as protected the people of Valeron, his home world, and in his later years fell in love and married Elyra. Shortly thereafter, his wife died due to unexplained circumstances connected with a criminal on Earth. Using a Time-Scanscope coupled with his hyper-vision, Vartox anticipated what may occur should he seek out this villain, leading to a tragic battle with Superman.
Thus, Vartox orchestrated matters so that the criminal gained similar powers to him in order for the
two to battle. In the end, this crook was sentenced to life imprisonment on Valeron for his involvement with the death of two innocent women. And so, from this occasion a friendship was struck between the Man of Steel and the Sentinel of Space.

Vartox possessed superhuman strength, near invulnerability, manifested extensive mind-over-matter might. He also exhibited a vast array of energy based powers of diverse potent effects, and could teleport. He could also pass these abilities onto others and could transfer his own mental capacity into another sentient being. For a time Vartox adopted the alias of Vernon O'Valeron while on Earth. At this time, he would begin a long distance romance with television reporter, and Superman's former girlfriend as a teenage, the red headed Lana Lang.
Reiter possessed superhuman strength, near invulnerability, manifested extensive mind-over-matter mighty. He displayed heat vision from his eyes and blind flash beams from his hands and could teleport. He could impart his will on others to operate in his steed on occasion with great mental focus brought to bear. After his facial scarring Reiter abandoned his civilian identity and became known exclusively as Baron Blitzkrieg. Among his recurring adversaries was a red headed heroine known as Firebrand.
Eventually, after a couple confrontations with his world's Wonder Woman, Blitzkrieg battled Superman nearly to a standstill as had Vartox with his Superman. Each believed in their own ideals even though these were often misguided, with O'Valeron heralded as a hero throughout the universe while Blitzkrieg was infamously a power-mad depot of his own corner of reality.
