These garish green guardians were in actuality inventive individuals who had captured the attention of a pair of just journalists, Lois Lane of Earth-One and Johnny Chambers of Earth-Two. Two would-be "human cannonballs" that were mere footnotes in the history of heroism... or haughtiness. Lois had encountered the costumed Ryan Chase,who utilized his experience in the circus to adopt the alias of the Human Cannonball... Johnny met a man named Mercury who was in actuality a creative crook named Trick Tate. Both Cannonball and Mercury had devises allowing them to emulate flight, being shot through the air by machinations of their mercurial minds. Nevertheless, these two were far from clones of the other, as Chase was an aspiring hero of Metropolis for a brief time, while Tate was simply trying to ferret out the secret behind his rival Johnny (Chambers) Quick's super speed. Although Tate gained these powers, he was himself "tricked" into forgetting the formula behind them. As for Chase, after his half dozen forays into fighting felons he retired back to circus life.
