Chronal Copies Temporal Twins

The physics differed drastically in the  divergent dimension of Earths One and Two, and among these was the affect on time with living beings. In one universe, a temporally displaced individual could not exist in the same time as the past or future version of themselves. In another universe, an individual could exist as multiple copies of themselves at the same time. However, in that second reality, it was impossible to create a chronal clone of themselves while in the first it was entirely possible.

Two time tyrants discovered these core principals in their native realms and more than once manipulated these quirks in physics to their own amoral agendas. These villains were T.O. Morrow of Earth-One, and Per Degaton of Earth-Two, and both men were persistent foes of the Justice League and Justice Society, respectively.

T.O. Morrow first appeared in Central City, when he spawned three chronoal counterparts of Hal "Green Lantern" Jordan, complete with identical power rings. These three synthetic beings were sent by their creator to steal precious items from the Louve in Paris, the Statue of Liberty in New York City, and London. This terrible trio  taunt Green Lantern and his Justice League teammate the Flash, who each pursue one of the fake Lanterns in Paris and New York, and then the pair seemingly teammup in London the Flash determines that his partner is one of the fakes. The real Lantern was defeated in New York City, and after freeing his friend, the Leaguers track down Morrow at his headquarters while the psuedo-Lanterns fade from existence. Although initially tricked by the T.O. Morrow temporal clone, the heroes discover this rouse and corner the real Morrow. Seeing no way out, the villain seemingly falls to his death in an underground pit.

Per Degaon hatched the third of this history-altering schemes when he recruited the Crime Syndicate of Earth-Three to accompany him to Earth-Prime, where the rogues stole nuclear weapons from Cuba. Bringing them back to Earth-Two in 1942, Degaton sought to blackmail the world into accepting his authoritarian rule, which in one future timeline was successful until the early 1980s. However, the Justice League of Earth-One travelled back to that era and teamed up with the All-Star Squadron to oppose him, and soon found their friends from the future appear in the skies above one of Degaton's nuclear detonation demonstrations at sea. These were the 1980 versions of 1940s Justice Society members Green Lantern, Starman and Doctor Fate... along with superheroines Power Girl and Huntress. The three male Society members were the chronal counterparts of Morrow's initial two Green Lanterns and himself (while the 1980s Power Girl, who also existed in the 1940s, was the chronal counterpart of Supergirl's Satan Girl/Nightflame clone from the 1970s).

The third of Morrow's Green Lantern temporal twins had a counterpart in the Conqueror's synthetic Green Lantern, which he used against the original and his Justice Society allies. Years later, T.O. developed chronal clones of Steve Trevor, Mera, Hawkgirl, Jean Loring and a girl name Midge... in order the ensnare Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Hawkman, Atom and Snapper Carr into accepting their paralyzing kisses. Once they accomplished their evil deeds for their master, these being like the lethal Lantern trio faded from existence.

During Per's previous time traveling case, he brought back to 1941 future versions of Wotan, Professor Zobar Zodiak, Sky Pirate, King Bee and the Monster (as well as Solomon Grundy, whose Earth-One counterpart was the artificial Grundy clone created by the Parasite in his war against Superman). These chronal clones existed during the same time period as their earlier version, who were unaware that their future selves were engaged in battle with the All-Star Squadron. This scheme, as with all of Degaton's schemes, failed miserably.

Years later, T.O. Morrow reappeared and disgarded the use of chornal clones, and once more manufactured Red Tornado androids modeled after the original, who turned against his master and joined the Justice Society (and later the Justice League). These Tornado androids were made of the same temporal technology as the living chrononal clones, but unlike these being they were made of silicon chips and hardware.

Corrupt Chronol Clones Cause Cosmic Crisis

The sinister scientists and aspiring authoritarians, T.O. Morrow and Per Degaton, each stealing time-tech allowing them to pierce back the veil of time. Borrowing from the intellectual advances of other more honorable men, Morrow and Degaton.

Futurenergy helped formulate five chronal clones based on five love interests of the Justice League, in order to ensnare half of its membership. These were Steve Trevor, Jean Loring, Shayera "Hawkgirl" Hol, Midge, and Mera... whose identical appearance to the originals helped lure Wonder Woman, the Atom, Hawkman, Snapper Carr and Aquaman into kissing them. This caused each Leaguer to fall into a comatose state, leaving the remaining members to face automatons replicating old adversaries of the League. Among these, there was a sixth chronol duplicate who appeared in Doctor Light. Once each served his or her purpose, they were promptly erased from existence, while the original five romantic partners of the League were unaware of what transpired to the loves of their lives.

Temporal causality from Per Degaton's time machine, which he stole from Professor Zee, allowed him to pull sixth supervillains from the late 1940s back to December of 1941. These included Per Degaton himself, Wotan, Professor Zobar Zodiak, Sky Pirate, King Bee and the Monster (a seventh cloned creature, Solomon Grundy, was actually the doppelgänger of the Earth-One Solomon Grundy spawned by the Parasite decades later). Due to chronol energy, these crooks were able to exist simultaneous to their younger selves, who were existing in the same time period unaware of these events transpiring. All of these criminals except the Monster were able to ensnare their prey, leaving all save three members of the Justice Society in a comatose state*.

In other cases involving Morrow and Degaton, there were other time twins spawned by their malicious macinations. Morrow created three chronal clones of Green Lantern and one of himself during his initial appearance. These pawns proved powerless versus the League's Flash and Green Lantern. Degaton's third adventure, which involved nuclear blackmail in 1942, led to four 1980s members of the Justice Society entering that era, while their past selves existed simultaneously and unaware that their future selves were there!

Eventually, thanks to the intervention of the Red Tornado who helped revive the Justice League, and Robotman along with the All-Star Squadron who helped rescue the Justice Society, both Morrow and Degaton were decisively defeated. As with Morrow's clones, Degaton's clones** were each erased from existence as they resumed their lives in the future from which they were originally plucked.

* The ensuing battle between the All-Star Squadron and Justice Society versus Degaton's minions mirrored the battle on another occasion between the Justice League and Queen Bee's Anti-Justice League.

Sturdy See-Through Shields of the 30th Century

Force-field belt and the Bomb Defense Formula were revolutionary pieces of technology developed in the 30th century. However, while these were effectively used in that era, they were also employed a thousand years earlier, impacting the lives of two Earth's greatest heroes when in the hands of their nefarioius foes.

Brainiac Five was born Querl Dox, descendent to the planet of Colu-One's freedom fighter, Vril Dox. The computer tyrants indentured a human youth in Vril to be tutored by his surrogate father, the android known as Brainiac. However, when Vril led an uprising among his people against the Tyrants and their chief android agent, Brainiac left this world behind to seek others to subdue across the universe. Among the technologies Brainiac employed was his "ultra-force shield" belt, when even kept his eventual arch-enemy Superman of Earth-One at bay.

Per Degaton was recruited into the Time Trust of Earth-Two, a group of scientists who collaborated to develop a working time ray. Once this was completed, they enlisted the aid of the Justice Society of America, sending them a thousand years into the future to obtain the necessary components to construct a "bomb-defense formula" that could protect America from foreign threats. The Society succeeded in retrieving the necessary piece to assemble this protective device.

Querl improved upon his android "ancestor's" technology, developing a superior version known as his "force field belt" which could protect both himself and others with whom he projected the field around. With this and his 12th level of intelligence, Brainiac Five  obtained membership into the Legion of Super-Heroes, who benefited from these force fields throughout the years.

Degaton saw the effectiveness of the Time Trust's "Bomb-Defense Formula", and secretly sabotaged it so that a second test seemingly exposed this force field as defective. While the Time Trust and the United States decided not to rely on the formula, Degaton himself memorized how this device was assembled and... years later... reassembled it above his ally Brain Wave's satellite during a battle with the Justice Society. While this force field was effective, the Society was still able to defeat the villains in the end.

Eventually, Brainiac Five used his force-field belt against Pulsar Stargrave, a powerful opponent who himself claimed to be the 30th century version of Brainiac himself. If this is true, it was quite ironic that Querl was able to ultimately sequester Stargrave within a force field, with the meglamanica seemingly destroying himself within its transparent energized surface.

Equally interestingly, Pulsar's counterpart on Colu-Two, a synthetic servant of Vandal Savage known as the "Chief" used a seemingly similar force field. This one kept Superman and Power Girl ensnared for a period of time, until the Kryptonian cousins eventually freed themselves and confronted Savage and his forces.

Twice-Told-Tales: Alexander the Great - Ally or Adversary

The pivitol year was 331 B.C.E., in an event known as the Battle of Arbela. On both Earths One and Two, the Grecian leader Alexander the Great led his forces into battle against King Darius of Persia along with that monarch's army. Yet on each world, time travelers journeyed back from the 20th century, with the intent of influencing the past to further their future agendas. These twin time masters were Rip Hunter of Earth-One and Per Degaton of Earth-Two.

Rip Hunter and his crew of Jeff Smith, Bonnie and Corky Baxter retrieved an ancient tablet once possessed by Alexander that allegedly revealed the location of Atlantis. However, as they were unable to decipher the bottom line, they quartet piloted their time sphere back to 331. After aiding Alexander and his minions, they were given guidance and where they might find the missing information in another earlier era.

Per Degaton and his minions sought to deprieve the 20th century of all modern technology except that which they themselves possessed, and ascertained the pivitol year to change such history was in 331 during this key battle. Degaton and his forces aided the Persians in their onslaught against the Greeks, and a new timeline resulted in the time tyrant's victory. However, Green Lantern retrieved his Justice Society teammates from the future, and brought them back to the time of Arbela when they allied with Alexander's legion in defeating the Persians. The main future timeline was restored to normal.

While Alexander was treated as an ally by the Justice Society, when he had been brought forward in time with fellow world conquerors by Doctor Doome, the Grecian lord acted as a criminal. Utilizing a batallion of robots, Alexander was thwarted by the Ace Archers known as Green Arrow and Speedy, who along with their partners in the Law's Legionnaires helped track down and defeat the five tempermental tyrants of the past.

On Earth-One, that Green Arrow in his identity as Oliver Queen purchased an ancient iron statute known as the Emperor Eagle, originally bequeathed to Alexander shortly before his death. This led Arrow and fellow Justice Leaguer the Batman into conflict with the Joker and Two-Face, who stole the statue for the ruler of the country where it originated.

Timelines of Injustice: Sinister Society's Successful Schemes

The Injustice Society may have ultimately proved a failure when battling their opposite number, the Justice Society, however two of their members succeeded beyond their wildest dreams in ruling the world. Of a kind.

Vandal Savage had the longest run of a rogue's reign, when he schemed to have Superman follow him back through the ages the detonate various time bombs that reset history. As a result, Earth-One was transformed into a perpetual kingdom was the Earth-Two Savage as its sole sovereign for centuries. Or at least for several days, though it seemed longer given how the time stream was altered.

Vandal was known for pilfering the equipment of his fellow Socialites back when he worked with them in the late 1940's, and thus it would've been his ally Per Degaton's temporal technology that was instrumental in the immortal villain's victory. Although Superman figured this out and reverts history to how it was intended to be.

And speaking of Degaton, when he was a lowly lab assistant for Time Trust scientist Professor Malachi Zee, he gained access to temporal technology. In 1947, Per stole Zee's time cabinet and journeyed back in time with armies and 20th century weaponry in order to alter the course of the key Battle of Arbela in 331 BC which changed the course of history. As such, Earth-Two did not technologically advance past a medieval state, while Degaton secured his modern armaments in a chromium lined cave. Even into the late 1950's, this resulted in this tyrant having unmatched power which even the Justice Society could not overcome.

That is, until Green Lantern journeyed back in time with his teammates and tipped the Battle of Arbela back in favor of the true victors according to history. This led to time being reset, with Per's reign of tyranny ending. Although, the memory of his fleeting victory would remain and prompt him to pursue this path once more.

On his second attempt, Degaton stole atomic weapons from Earth-Prime,enlisting the aid of Earth-Three's Crime Syndicate in order to control Earth-Two. Apparently, this was the decisive step needed so that into the 1980's, Degaton's new history proved him master of his native world. In this reality, superheroes still existed however the Crime Syndicate members Ultraman, Superwoman, Owlman, Johnny Quick and Power Ring remained as his enforcers allowing them to subjugate this world.

The combined efforts of the Justice Society, Justice League and All-Star Squadron were needed to thwart Degaton's determination for dominance. In the process, they changed back the altered timeline on Earth-Prime that had resulted from the Syndicate's theft of weaponry, when that world was reduced to a devastated landscape. With not atom bombs nor his Syndicate at his disposal, Degaton once more retreated to his native 1947 leaving all save him forgetting about this encounter. His desire would remain.

On Earth-One, Professor Ronson accidentally unleashed via his chronal transponder an energy wave that altered that planet's future causing its superheroes to be eliminated with only their alter egos remaining. Thankfully, the World's Finest Team from the future of Earths One and Two restored reality to its natural course.

Interestingly, the first chronological reset of history on Earth-One was actually the creation of a deviant planet and universe spawned by Earth-Two's Thunderbolt at the behest of the criminal Johnny Thunder who wanted the Justice League eliminated. Replacing them with his Lawless League, themselves counterparts to the Crime Syndicate that were displaced in the alternate timeline on Earth-Two, this quintet of crooks had fleeting careers before they were dispatched by the visiting Justice Society. Although this world exists somewhere within the Multiverse, as does the altered timelines we've considered, they've been folded back into non-existence from whence they came as far as we're concerned.

However, an interesting aside is one final artificially created timeline and universe in the form of Earth-Zero, which was made manifest when Mister Mxyztplk and the entity known as Aethyr destroyed the short-lived planet Aethyr in Earth-One's reality yet projected it and its Bizarro inhabitants into a pocket universe much like Earth-A or these timelines. With their own evil replicas of Justice League and Justice Society members, these worlds would only be liberated from such oppression (although the Bizarro's enjoyed it, given their warped nature living in reverse) when the champions of main-stream realities intervened.

So while history cannot be changed in the universes of the Multiverse, it can be branched off into timelines or universes distinct and different from each individual universe. Although due to the nature of time and the fluidity of their states of being, such existence is transient to say the least!

Force Field Fighters: The Tale of Twin Time Tyrants

When Querl Dox of Colu first enlisted in Earth-One's Time Institute, his genius level intellect quickly acquired for him the respect of his peers. Among their many pursuits was developing the Time Bubble that would pierce the time stream and allow them to journey from the 30th century to other eras. Eventually, he became motivated to join the Legion of Super-Heroes as Brainiac Five, coming equipped with his patented force field belt and other gadgets which made as much an impression as fellow recruit Supergirl. His career with this team was mixed, as he was key in several of their victories although he made a misguided attempt to create sentient artificial intelligence which became the evil Computo and later went temporarily mad, almost destroying the universe. He regained his sanity and served the Legion with distinction from them on. Like his counterpart Degaton, Dox was tied to an evil "Brain" in the original Brainiac, as well as coming into conflict with a Legion of All-Stars from time to time.

When Per Degaton, the original version, joined the Time Trust, he was instrumental behind the scenes in its success... and failure. When the Justice Society of America used technology to journey to the 25th century to obtain bomb defense technology, it was Per as a lab assistant that sabotaged it. Some years later, when his supervisor Professor Malachi, several versions of Degaton would attempt to usurp control over the world only to be defeated by the Society and later the All-Star Squadron. While chronal-clones of Degaton had moderate success on at least two occasions of obtaining a rule of decades, the prime version eventually aged and as an old man reunited with fellow Injustice Socialite Brain Wave. In a newly conditioned body, Per's mental acumen allowed him to develop his own force field generator while in conflict with Power Girl and the Society. Eventually, in a rematch with them, he perished in battle.

Girls of Steel and Temporal Tyrants

Supergirl and Brainiac Five joined the Legion of Super-Heroes at the same time. Power Girl joined the Justice Society of America when Per Degaton's temporal clone battled them. Sparks flew, with Earth-One's Girl of Steel suspicious as Five was the alleged descendant of her cousin's old enemy... Earth-Two's Maid of Might just plain didn't care for the arrogant genius spliced from a moment of his predecessors' timelines. Who could blame them? At times, Querl Dox... as this Brainiac was actually named... had a tormented psyche that plagued his teammates with dreams of grandeur. At one point, he threatened his universe and caused the temporary insanity of teammate Matter-Eater Lad. But he redeemed himself of this unfortunate attributes, and was a stalwart member of the 30th century Legion, even coming up with various devices such as their flight rings. Although he did accidentally create one of their greatest nemesis, Computo. Still, it ultimately became subservient, so all turned out well. And maybe that's why Kara of Krypton-One was so enamored by this troubled yet tenacious teen of the future.

No such qualities were found in Degation, any Degaton for that matter. The first tried to conquer ancient  history and set up a modern day rule at least ten years into his future before the Justice Society overturned his plans. The second Degaton tried to use the crisis of Pearl Harbor and World War II to his advantage, although then the All-Star Squadron was formed to defeat him. The third Degaton had a rematch with the All-Stars, the Society as well as Earth-One's Justice League..even ruling forty years later... until the heroes defeated him once more causing that timeline to cease to exist. The forth Degaton was left without the means to time travel, and after a stint among the Injustice Society versus his old foes, he ended up an old man. When Brain Wave revived him, the pair faced a Justice Society now having a Kara of Krypton-Two. And even though Degaton like Brainiac could come up with a nifty force field and other gadgets, his intellect was no match for the enthusiasm that was the Supermen's lady cousins.

Migrants of Multiple Earths: The Mekanique Method

Under mysterious events during the middle 1940s to the year 1950, several superheroes and their young sidekicks disappeared from their native Earth-Two, and later became the first wave of costumed crusaders of Earth-One.

From in-story references, we know that: a.) there was a connection between Hank "Commander Steel" Heywood... originally of Earth-Two and the first All-Star to migrate to Earth-One... and Per Degaton, the time travelling tyrant, b.) several heroes' "DC’s Who's Who" entries state both their affiliation to Earth-Two's All-Star Squadron as well as detailing their later lives on Earth-One, c.) Steel's recruitment of Infinity, Inc. to obtain assistance from Earth-Two heroes on what he viewed as hero-deprived Earth-One. Connecting the dots provides us with an idea as to the order of events that precipitated the migration of a dozen mystery men and their allies during 1946 from Earth-Two to Earth-One, as follows....

Steel had in his possession a futuristic transponder that a German scientist purchased from the Monitor in order to send the Justice Battalion into hyperspace. When he was accidentally shunted to Earth-One by this device in 1942, Heywood joined the military and then returned to the United States towards the end up World War II, Hank used this device to contact select individuals from his home world at some point between 1945 and 1946.

The robot-woman Mekanique had betrayed the Squadron in 1942, and although her body had been destroyed, her head with its time-space crystal was preserved at Project M by lab assistant Per Degaton, who was a colleague of Chuck Grayson. Thus, prior to starting his criminal career, Degaton formed a relationship through Grayson and his pal Robotman, and through them with Heywood… although on separate worlds.

Heywood was able to use the Monitor's transponder to communicate with his old ally Robotman aka Paul Dennis through the cybernetic head of Robbie’s former “girlfriend” Mekanique. Utilizing her ability to cross dimensional planes, Robotman initiated Mekanique's trans-dimensional capabilities and brought along with himself several former fellow All-Stars to Earth-One. Robotman and Steel recruited TNT, Dyna-Mite, Manhunter, Guardian among with Newsboy Legion and Guardian’s younger brother Will, Air Wave, and Zatara. Years later, as previously mentioned, Steel would do much the same thing when he temporarily recruited Infinity, Inc. of Earth-Two to battle the newest incarnation of the Justice League on Earth-One.

No doubt these heroes and their colleagues were inspired by the example a few years prior of Uncle Sam, a patriotic hero like Steel who recruited several members of the All-Star Squadron into forming the Freedom Fighters, protecting another earth in Earth-X that had no superheroes. And so, the first generation of superheroes on Earth-One were migrants from Earth-Two.

Heywood would secretly sponsor research on cloning technology through his Council and the young adept minds of the Newsboy Legion. These now adult Legionnaires became aspiring geneticists using perfect physical specimens such as Guardian and Manhunter, incorporating cybernetic technology Robotman utilized, while TNT and Dyna-Mite could add insight into atomic technology. Larry Jordan incorporated the Monitor's device into teleportation technology he would use as Air Wave. All of these great minds were orchestrated by Heywood in order to bring about a new world order on his adopted world, to model it after his home world of Earth-Two! But what became of these All-Stars later in life on their adopted world?

  • Larry Jordan aka Air Wave and Zatara fathered their own counterparts in a son in Hal Jordan a and daughter in Zatanna Zatara! Air Wave perished in the prime of his life when his son was 3 years old, while Zatara journeyed throughout the Multiverse when his daughter was still a little girl, before reuniting with Zatanna when she was a young adult!
  • Jim "Guardian" Harper and his little brother Will pursued civilian lives as had the four Newsboy Legionnaires. Eventually, Jim and the Newsboys were each cloned for a new generation, while Will died soon after his son Roy "Speedy" Harper was born, counterpart to his native world's Speedy!
  • Paul Kirk retired his Manhunter alter ego, and during a big game hunt ended up in a coma for decades. When he awoke, he learned he had become the template for an army of clones of the Council. This Council attempted to rule the world, which Kirk would help defeat at the cost of his life, just as his surviving clone would do when facing Darkseid!
  • TNT and Dyna-Mite had been recruited by Steel during the waning days of the Manhattan Project, only to find that their powers had increased and become unstable on their adopted world. They were kept in an underground bunker, and ultimately moved to the cities of Kandor and Atlantis to live out their lives after meeting Earth-One's Super Friends. TNT joined the Kandorians on the new trans-dimensional world of Rokyn while Dyna-Mite remained in Aquaman's city indefinitely.
  • Robotman made several appearances on Earth-One from 1946 until 1953, then worked alongside the Justice League of America during their first case. Robbie was soon after trapped in suspended animation within a cave for over a decade. Once revived he migrated back to Earth-Two, and had his mind transplanted into the body of his now brain dead former colleague Chuck Grayson. Assuming his late friend’s identity, There he renewed his friendship with members of the Justice Society, even testifying at a congressional hearing they were involved in.

  • In 1950, Sargon had himself traveled from Earth-Two to Earth-One and become reacquainted with these heroes and Hank Heywood. He left his native Earth at that time due to all superheroes (aside from a select few) being banned by the United States government, and his awareness as to where some of his fellow All-Stars migrated to within the Multiverse. Unfortunately over time, after a brief marriage failed (except for having a close relationship with his ex-wife’s niece), and Sargent turned evil. Seeking to gain more power for himself, Sargon ended up being a recurring foe of the Flash and later Wonder Woman, although he did end up helping the Justice League in their battle with Starbreaker.

  • Decades later, Steel employed Degaton and charged him with the task of rebuilding Mekanique’s body after his initial plans with Steel's fellow All-Stars had failed, given their own individual life choices. During this occasion, Degaton retrieved Mekanique's head, attaching it to a new body and sent her to Earth-One to fulfill her mission before she returned to Degaton's side in a post-Crisis universe.
While the Justice Society of America* of post-Crisis Earth-0 assumed the place vacated by the above All-Stars, migrating to Earth-Two and its adjacent Apokolips Ragnarok notional dimension, this was only for a few years (with the exception of four additional teammates who joined them there**). When the JSA returned to their own Earth, an Earth-0 group known as the Daemen filed their roles and offset the departing All-Stars on Earth-One. Their membership included Arquoi, Blaquokar, Calabri, Dhaozan, Feth Sudol, Gulgak, Huromon, Inztuk, Kistimaak, Piztok, Tzingaas and Zhazor. These former villains redeemed themselves as they protected both Earth-Two and all other reality from then onward within Asgard.

* The Earth-O Justice Society members who migrated to Earth-Two's Asgard were Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Flash, Green Lantern, Hourman, Atom, Sandman, Sandy, Johnny Thunder (and his Thunderbolt), Starman, Doctor Mid-Nite, Wildcat. These individuals compensated for the loss of All-Stars Air Wave, TNT, Dyna-Mite, Sargon, Zatara, Robotman/Chuck Grayson (the brain of the former and the brain-dead body of the latter), Manhunter, Guardian, his brother Will Harper, and Guardian's four Newsboy Legionnaires: Tommy Tompkins, Big Words, Gabby, Scrapper.

** Four other Justice Society teammates also briefly resided in this Earth-Two adjacent dimension: 1.) the Spectre, 2.) Doctor Fate, 3.) Power Girl and 4.) Star-Spangled Kid. Similarly, four individuals briefly appeared in Earth-One’s universe: 1.) the original Spectre of Earth-Two, 2.) the former Earth-Two Lord of Chaos known as Doctor Chaos, 3.) Lesla-Lar, the Kara Zor-El/L of Earth-Three raised in Kandor, 4.) Chuck Grayson who accompanied his friend Robotman to Earth-One before ending up brain dead soon after.

Time Travelers of Twin Terras Triumph over Trouble

Time travel was a grand pursuit of individuals on both Earths One and Two. On Earth-One, Ripley "Rip" Hunter devised a time sphere along with his colleagues Jeffrey Smith, Bonnie Baxter and her brother Corky. Hunter as the "Time Master" along with his friends journeyed backward and forward in time several times. Rip Hunter's counterpart Rip Carter along with Carter's Boy Commandos, had their own unorthodox means of time travel. Both teams met several historic figures.

The Time Trust of Earth-Two consisted of Doctor  Swanley, Professor Everson, Professor Zee and Doctor Doome. This collaberation of scientists developed an experimental time ray which projected the Justice Society of America in the 30th century, whereby the heroes collected pieces necessary to devise a "bomb defense formula" that would protect America in the 20th century. Although initially this formula worked, the Time Trust's assistant Per Degaton sabotaged it to further his future schemes.

While the other Time Trust members left their own distinct marks on the history of the Justice Society of America, Degaton proved to have left the most indelible mark on the team. Three times, he attempted to alter history: first while altering history from 331 BCE Macedonia, next in December 1941 during the opening days of World War II and lastly in the Spring of 1942. Per battled the JSA a couple more times before a fourth failed chronal-caper led to Degaton’s death.

In place of Degaton’s forays versus the Society, another time traveling tyrant battled the Justice League of America in the same number of cases the Time Lord named Frand Mattar. This Lord of Time like his Earth-Two counterpart the Light (aka the Unknown) was tenacious, while Degaton and his Earth-One doppelgänger Brainiac Five of the Legion of Super-Heroes were equally so…on both sides of the law.

Professor Damon Everson assisted Earth-Two's Atom and his teammates of the Justice Society with his now improved time ray, as had Professor Alpheus Hyatt with his time pool during his long partnership with Earth-One's Atom and the Justice League. Everson projected members of the Society into past eras, to help Damon's assistant who had been tormented over his past. Hyatt used his small pool to extract historical items, unknowingly granting the diminutive Atom the ability to time travel with it.

Professor Malachi Zee developed a time machine that was stolen by his lab assistant Per Degaton on three occasions to employed various temporal schemes. Each was thwarted by the Justice Society, along with the All-Star Squadron and the Justice League. Decades later, a time-displaced Zee returned to identify his murderer before he died, in front of an assembled Justice Society. Seeing no alternative, Degaton took his own life rather than be returned to prison once more by his hated enemies.

A much kinder eventuality presented itself for Doctor Phineas Quayle who, unlike Zee, was not betrayed by any assistant as he kept his time traveling device secret. Using his time scanner to see future events, Quayle saw the collapse of society, blaming it on the presence of superheroes. To that end, he became the supervillain known as Doctor Anomaly. After a series of battles with the Justice League, when finally faced with defeat, Quayle projected himself into the future and self-isolated from mankind.
Doctor Wilfred Doome battled the Law's Legionnaires after his encounter with the Justice Society while with the Time Trust. Doome enlisted the aid of five historic tyrants to retrieve metals needed to refine his time machine. After his defeat, Doome retreated to the future and became Tibro, who fought the Earth-Two Wonder Woman. His twin was the Time Trapper, arch foe of the Legion of Super-Heroes in the 30th century and of the Super Friends in the 20th century. He first fought the Earth-One Wonder Woman as T.Y. Master.

Doctor Alvin Swanley had his death avenged when the Justice Society uses his time chute to track down the murder weapon and the man who used it against him. A competitor of Swanley Erik Pomar was jealous of Swanley's developments in temporal physics and sought to steal these while framing another man. After retrieving the weapon he used that had fallen through several past eras, the heroes brought Pomar to justice .

His doppleganger was Professor Mark Ronsom, a scientist who in 1942 on Earth-One developed the chronal transponder, and because of this became the target for Nazi Germany's Agent Axis. When Axis attempted to assassinate Ronson, he was thwarted by a visiting Wonder Woman from Earth-Two who used the transponder to save Ronson's life. Due to this, Mark became the Ravager, placed under the control of Agent Axis. The World's Finest Team of Wonder Woman with Earth-One's Superman, Batman, Green Arrow and Black Canary restored Ronson to normal and reset time.

In Earth-One's 30th century, it would be Brainiac Five and his allies in the Time Institute who would advanced temporal technologies in ways similar to the 20th century Time Trust. A version of the Institute existed in Earth-Two's 30th century with Jon Stannard's Space-Time Authority that worked with the Justice Society versus the Chameleon invasion.
