Phenomenal Phasing Phantom People

“Out of this world” is a common expression uttered when one is shocked and amazed by some event. Many such incredible events occurred on Earths One and Two, including end-of-world threats. On two occasions on each Earth, all of humanity was pulled from their world…. from their native universes… by twin cosmic entities… and by a man and a woman. 

The man was Alan “Green Lantern” Scott who, in a moment of disgust towards the prevalence of crime across the globe, willed his power ring to remove all evil from Earth-Two. This caused all humanity to be phased from reality, and were briefly transplanted to the desert salt plains of Utah on Earth-One. These individuals were comatose in suspended animation, including Alan, until they were revived by his counterpart Hal “Green Lantern” Jordan. The two Emerald Crusaders used their combined power rings to will these billions of people back to Earth-Two.

A Kryptonian woman named Faora Hu-ul escaped her dimension prison and sought revenge on the son of her jailer Jor-El, Kal-El aka Superman. After freeing herself, she set wheels motion to exile humanity into the Phantom Zone while liberating Faora’s fellow criminals. Thankfully, Superman already deduced her scheme, and sabotaged Hu-Ul’s equipment to reverse the process. Humanity and the rogue Kryptonians were refined to Earth-One and the Phantom Zone, respectively.

Years earlier, Lex Luthor unleashed the cosmic entity known as the Galactic Golem upon his arch-enemy Superman. During the battle between the two, Superman used the Golem’s energy to shift all humanity to another dimensional plane (Earth-Two) just in case the Golem won the battle and decimated Earth-One. He didn’t, and mankind returned to their home world.

Back on Earth-Two, the cosmic entity known as Aquarius shifted humanity out of that universe* while battling the Justice Society of America. However, with the help of the Justice League, Superman and the Society vanquished Aquarius and returned mankind to their home world.

There were multiple occasions when inhabitants of both Earths temporarily or permanently migrated to the another Earth. These included the following individuals and occasions:

• The original Freedom Fighters when Uncle same recruited a handful of heroes from Earth-Two to join him in averting the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Empire.
• The later Freedom Fighters, former members of Earth-Two's All-Star Squadron, who traveled to Earth-X during the Crisis on Infinite Earths (and several Earth-One heroes perished during the same Crisis event).
• The surviving Freedom Fighters traveled to Earth-One for a brief stay there, while the Secret Society of Super-Villains of Earth-One had a months long stay on Earth-Two.
• Old West and World War 2 individuals passed when entering the Anti-Matter wave originating from the Universe of Qward.
• All-Star Squadron select members traveled from Earth-Two to Earth-One to aid Steel.
  
• Justice Society of America members of post-Crisis traveled to Earth-Two's universe to protect it in the dimension of Asgard.
  
• Red Tornados, Black Canary & M'La, Bat-Mire & Spectre, and many, many more left their home worlds for parallel planets!
  

* As seen in the top left of picture with Aquarius, Vandal Savage along with all humanity shifted into the Spectral Zone, the Earth-Two version of the Phantom Zone. He returned there years later after confronting the two Flashes in a time traveling adventure.

Vile Vrangs & Just Jeyes: Foes & Friends of Superman

Unique quirks occur in the parallel planes of existence where Earths One and Two reside. Among these, some alien species are dramatically different, not just in their form but also in their function. Such is the case with the residents of parallel planets Vrang and Jeyes.

The Vrang were an intergalactic species of conquerors, who first visited Earth-One in the early 1980s. Centuries earlier, they had been invaders of Krypton-One, enslaving the Kryptonians until an uprising rebelled against these alien overlords. During the late 20th century, a Vrang vessel discovered the remained of Krypton's Argo City floating in space, with evidence that two Kryptonians... Superman and Supergirl... survived! As they approached, Earth-One, the invisible energy-wrath residents of the Phantom Zone.... who were criminals exiled from Krypton before it exploded... escaped that dimension to face the hated Vrang.

The Jeyes were an intergalactic species of explorers, who first visited Earth-Two in the early 1950s. While it is possible that centuries earlier they had journeyed to Krypton-Two, their presence would have remained undetected. This is due to the nature of their physical being, as invisible energy-wraths. When one of their vessels crash-landed on Earth-Two, the Jeyes telepathically contacted Susie Thompkins... niece of that world's Superman.

While Superman-One worked alongside four Phantom Zone criminals to vanquish the surviving Vrang, Superman-Two along with Susie and his wife Lois Lane Kent assisted the Jeyes in restoring their space craft and sending them back to their homeworld. Later, Superman-Two asked for their assistance in borrowing one of their spacecraft for a special mission, which they gladly agreed to provide.

While the four Phantom Zone criminals, now in solidified physical bodies, used their superhuman abilities to counteract the Vrang spaceship's massive weaponry, only the golden age Superman directly confronted the Jeyes spaceship's amazing armaments. Although for the greatest hero of Earth-Two, his wife and niece lent support from a protective bubble nearby.

It’s interesting that on Krypton-One, a large number of Kryptonian survivors were phantoms while their Vrang foes still had solid bodies, while the Vrang's counterparts the Jeyes were themselves phantoms. Quite likely, some of these Jeyes were the phantom rogues who battled some of Superman's Justice Society allies.

Hidden Hemispheres of Hyperspace

Hyperspace is defined as four or more dimensions folded upon itself, creating a multi-dimensional universal plane of existence. 

On one occasion, four Krptonian prisoners of the Phantom Zone discovered the means to reach a planet with unusual properties in an adjacent dimension they also labeled an "alternate universe"*. From this world, they launched deadly robotic Anachroids to wreak havok in space and time, until the Superman and Flash of Earth-One tracked them to their source and defeated these creatures and their masters. This trans-dimensional world may have been the same as Rokyn, where the Kandorians resided once Superman and Supergirl enlarged them.

This world had a counterpart in an "alternate universe"* of Earth-Two, a psuedo-Pluto which the Spectre had been exiled to, wherein the inhabitants spoke a language derived from that of the Andromedan Galaxy, the same galaxy where Krypton once resided! Could these have been long lost Kryptonian refugees? The domed city on this Pluto mirrored the once bottled city of Kandor. After quelling a civil war, Spectre later returned to this world, exiling Nazi agents there, no doubt out of revenge for their treatment of he and his Justice Society allies.

In face, six of his Justice Society colleagues had been simultaneously captured and also exiled into hyperspace via experimental rocketships by enemy Nazi agents. Hawkman was sent to a Saturn-like world named Arkania, a militant people like those of the extra-dimensional world Llorth, whom the Earth-One Hawkman once encountered. Later, the younger Hawkman traveled on twice through another dimensional warp to the world of Illoral, a mirror image of the Wingworld that Wonder Woman of the Justice Society visited more than once. Queen Desira and her daughter Princess Eve of Wingworld had counterparts in Dwyanna Ral of Llorth and Queen Maya of Floria.

The Atom of Earth-One and Doctor Mid-Nite of Earth-Two likewise visited other-dimensional worlds in Floria and Faux-Neptune (the Atom of Earth-Two visited a hyperspacial version of Mars like that of Mars II settled by the Martian Manhunter and his people in Earth-One's universe). 

Fellow Justice Society members Starman and Sandman visited worlds resembling Jupiter and Uranus with strange substance sentients as had the Metal Men of Earth-One , such as the alien Robot-spider Queen and minions of Metalus 5. Jimmy Olsen of Earth-One and Johnny Thunder of Earth-Two likewise ventured to alien dimensions on the same occasions as their peers Superman and Spectre above.

* The term "alternate universe" used for worlds visited by the individual Justice Leaguers and Justice Socialites as mentioned is different from that of planets in a "parallel universe". The alternate universe simply means an adjacent dimension attached to either the Earth-One or Earth-Two universe, respectively.

Machavelian Masterminds versus Men of Metal: Vandal Savage versus Shining Knight

Perhaps the most persistent pest to the family El of Krypton-One was the second cousin, once removed, of Kal-El/Superman known as Kru-El. Seeking to develop a stockpile of banned weaponry for his own sinister purposes, this black sheep of the El's was captured and incarcerated by Kal's father Jor-El.

Banished to the Phantom Zone, Kru-El would routinely throughout the years work alongside fellow prisoners of the Zone such as General Zod and Jax-Ur to attempt to exact revenged against the son of their jailer.

On one occasion, Kru-El... along with three other Zone prisoners General Zod, Jax-Ur and Professor Va-Kox... was instrumental in designing creatures known as Anachronids who disrupted space time continuum. This directly involved his cousin and fellow Justice Leaguer the Flash. A later encounter with the Phantom Zoners mentally controlling the Flash paralleled an earlier event when the Flash was briefly mentally manipulated by Va-Kox's cosmic twin Captain Luther Jarvis into battling the Spectre.

The several encounters between Man of Steel and Man of Malice on Earth-One were mirrored on Earth-Two by Kru-El's counterpart Vandal Savage... and another metallic man allied with Kal-L! We now consider the long running enmity between Vandal Savage as Genghis Khan vs the Shining Knight, Superman's fellow All-Star Sir Justin!

When Vandar Adg had been exposed to radiation from a blazing meteorite, he was imbued with immortality. As such, he lived for centuries while adopting various aliases as conquerors such as an ancient king of Sumner, Egyptian Pharaoh Cheops, Roman leader Julius Caesar, and other individuals who on Earth-One were individual men throughout the years. His last foray into direct conquest before becoming a power behind the scenes was as the Mongul ruler known as Genghis Khan. A young Khan aka Temujin of Earth-One had inadvertently been aided in his claim to power by a mistaken time lost Superboy, who saved his life twice!

As Superman, he would later redeem himself somewhat by leading a crushing defeat against Earth-Two's adult Genghis during an adventure with his fellow Justice League members, as well as that world's Justice Society and Law's Legionnaires. More on that later.

Several centuries prior to his appearance as Khan, as Vandal Savage this immortal was a feudal lord in England during the age of Camelot when he first encountered one of his most enduring adversaries, the Shining Knight. The Knight and his flying steed Winged Victory were investigating a massive dimensional tuning fork installed in the countryside next to Savage's castle by the ageless Monitor, placed there as well as four other key points in history on two earths to prevent them from being destroyed during the Crisis on Infinite Earths. While the Knight along with Earth-One's Firestorm and Ice Maiden defended this fork from threats originating in the Anti-Matter Universe, it was the marvelously metallic armored Knight who aroused Vandal's interest that would develop over the years.

As Khan, Savage was plucked from the thirteen century do the twentieth century by the renegade scientist known as Doctor Doome. The Doctor had developed the means to traverse time, and employed various notorious conquerors from history including Attila the Hung, Alexander the Great and Napoleon Bonaparte as well as Khan to lead Doome's minions in modern conquest. The members of Law's Legionnaires (or Seven Soldiers of Victory) were dispatched to deal with these individual threats, with Knight choosing Khan. No doubt, this battle helped Genghis to recall when as Savage he had first encountered the Knight. Once defeated, Khan returned to his native time. Perhaps during his foray into the future, Savage recalled his earlier meeting with another Legionnaire, Vigilante, when that hero was sent to Ancient Rome when Vandal was Julius Caesar*.

Years later, the Legionnaires were thrust into the time stream after a battle with the Nebula Man, with each member arriving in a different historical era. Tied through the chronal device given to him by Doome, Khan was able to extract Shining Knight and bring him to the thirteen century in order to aid him in his conquest of China. It was during this occasion that the entity known as the Oracle dispatched teams of three heroes each to various eras in order to extract the Legionnaires and bring them back to their native era. Thus, it was Earth-Two's Sandman and Earth-One's Metamorpho and Superman who did this, with Superman's aforementioned victory versus Khan.

Vandal as Gaius Julius Caesar in ancient Rome had encountered a time-lost Vigilante of Law's Legionnaires as well as Rocky, a henchman of the Dummy. Then, centuries later as Count Lucovico, Savage met another of Law's Legionnaire in the Shining Knight, who sought the aid of Leonardo Da Vinci due to his invention of a time machine identical to that later used by the Dummy. It was that machine which the Dummy used in the 20th century to send the Legionnaires and his hood back to earlier eras.

Stealing this time machine and using it to pilfer from the Dummy in the 20th century, Savage would later utilize both technologies in Camelot and Colu-Two versus the Justice Society. encountered a time-lost Vigilante of Law's Legionnaires as well as Rocky, a henchman of the Dummy. Then, centuries later as Count Lucovico, Savage met another of Law's Legionnaire in the Shining Knight, who sought the aid of Leonardo Da Vinci due to his invention of a time machine identical to that later used by the Dummy. It was that machine which Dummy used in the 20th century to send the Legionnaires and his henchmen to earlier eras.

But this was not the end of Khan, as he would be pulled forward in time on one more occasion as a temporal phantom alongside other historical villains in order to battle the Patrol consisting of Fred, Pedro and Slim. Once returned to his earlier time period following defeat, Savage forsook being a direct ruler and instead assist others behind the scenes. As such, his first modern day appearance as Vandal Savage was versus first Green Lantern and then as a member of the Injustice Society versus the Lantern's Justice Society. He would return over the decades to battle the Society three more as well as the Flash of both earths.

Eventually, Savage met his own world's Superman in ancient Camelot which he returned to in order to lead the Society into a trap and draw them to a planet of his own design in order to siphon the Man of Steel's power into himself. And the person who led Superman and the Society to Camelot to pursue Vandal? The Shining Knight who had a link to the villain throughout the centuries. Eventually, Savage moved to Earth-One for a few months, first attempting to change that world's history to make him a conqueror and later an insidious business man. After decisive defeats versus the Man of Steel and his old foe Immortal Man with the Forgotten Heroes assisting them, Vandal Savage disappeared from Earth-One.

* Both Savage's Julius Caesar and Genghis Khan personas would be pulled forward in time to battle the Patrol members Fred, Pedro and Slim... although since these past versions already existed in 1943 at a point when their future version, Vandal, already existed... they appeared as phantoms.

Sinister Strategists of the Stars

This Twice-Told-Tale may seem a bit recycled, as we previously considered Vandal Savage's final battle versus the Justice Society of America as paralleling his battle with Earth-One's Superman. Both had Savage confront the Supermen of two worlds, however since that second tale was erased from Earth-One's history when Superman went back in time and changed events back to the way events originally occurred... a new tale took its place.

On Earth-One, Superman had a fierce foe in his criminal cousin  Kru-El, who had been banished into the penal Phantom Zone prior to the destruction of Krypton-One. Several times over the years, he and his fellow Zoners bedeviled his cousins Kal-El and Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl. Incarcerated for procuring weaponry, this would be the means by which Kru-El would torment Kal's Superman.

Possessing similar powers to his kin, Kru-El nevertheless proved less adept at fighting with these abilities. Just like his counterpart Savage, who had for a period of time been transformed into a phantom caught between dimensional planes of existence, was a master strategist.

On Earth-Two, Savage sought to regain his own immortality through an infusion of Kryptonian energies. Concocting an elaborate plot whereby Savage lured the Justice Society along with the Shining Knight back to the age of Camelot, assuming the alias of the sovereign known as King Arthur,  After subterfuge, Vandal was able to achieve what he felt was the means to restore his long last vitality which had not failed him for untold eons before this.

Vandal drew Superman and Power Girl to an artificial world, Colu-Two. There, under the influence of a Kryptonite sun of his own creation, while channeling the cosmic energies of Star-Spangled Kid's cosmic converter belt and Power Girl's own super powers, Savage battled with Superman in order to steal the Man of Steel's power. This, he theorized, would restore his immortality... however he was instead defeated.

However, a couple of mystery men pulled Vandal through a worm hole in space and kept him from being captured. This would be result in his journeying to Earth-One, in order to change history as mentioned above. Perhaps they were universe's version of the Sun-Thrivers who created Krypton's original red sun and the planet itself.

Wicked Women Wage War: The Story of Faora and Badra

Erndine Ze-Da and Badra, survivors of extinguished worlds, leaving devastation in their wake. Erndine Ze-Da along her husband Doctor Xa-Du were Kryptonian criminals sentenced to the Phantom Zone prior to their homeworld's destruction. When a volcano o Earth-One erupted and inexplicably tore a hole in reality between its universe and that of the Zone, the crooked couple were freed. Together, they hatched a scheme impersonating the adopted parents of Kal-El, who as Superboy was the son of their jailer Jor-El. When their ruse was exposed by the Boy of Steel, they were returned to the Phantom Zone.

 

Badra was the greatest strategist of her native planet. Faora ended up exiled to the Phantom Zone after her crimes against mankind... yes only MANkind which she resoundingly despised... shortly before Krypton exploded. Badra was the princess of her planet Hator's supreme power, and when war broke out she was concealed in a lead mine that shielded her and her along from a cosmic bomb that destroyed her world.

Eventually, Ze-Da and Xa-Du were once more freed of the Phnatom Zone, and this time disguised themselves as a dentist and dental assistant, while secretly attempting to move the orbit of Earth-One from its sun to Krypton's former sun, Rao. This would rob Superman of his superpowers, but instead he once more outwitted the pair and this time separated them in different galaxies.

Badra was taken to the Amazon's Reformation Island to condition her into becoming a model citizen. Both became background players among the Zoners and Amazons, after that.

Sinister Scientists Secluded in Shadowy Subspace

The Phantom Zone... the repository of the most vile criminals from the planet Krypton-One once Jor-El had discovered it... within only a few years was abandoned as to inhumane to imprison its illegal occupants. However, shortly thereafter that world exploded, and it would be years later when Jor-El's son Kal-El received the Phantom Zone Projector when Superboy would first encounter this now superpowered foes. Yes, they gained superhuman abilities like the Boy of Steel under Earth-One's yellow sun, and so individually and collectively, these criminals would face off versus their prisoners's son repeatedly through the years. And each universe has a similar twilight dimension adjacent to or, as evidenced by the appearance of Jur-Ll of Krypton-Three who used his Zone to travel to Earth-One's city of Kandor.

Since the Zone was a manifestation of an alien entity of its universe known as Aethyr, there was no corresponding entity or pocket dimension like the Zone through which Jor-L of Krypton-Two could transport his planet's criminals to... and in fact there is no record of any such infamous individuals having existed there. However, as often happens between these two universes, counterparts sometimes come from different places in each realm.

This was similar to the precedent set by Thanagar-One's Hawkman and Earth-Two's Hawkman, neither a native of his doppleganger's home world. Since Jor-L did not have opportunity to discover his own Phantom Zone, it was left to various scientists of Earth-Two to find the means to pierce the dimensional barrier into this new plane of existence. However, those men of Earth-Two who did so utilized access to it not to imprison felons but to bribe the innocent and empower their crooked cronies. Vandal Savage inadvertently became a transdimesional phantom in this realm like his cosmic twin Kru-El, when he tried to expose himself a second me time to a flaming meteorite that originally gave him immortality… hoping to gain new life from it. Then there was Professor Hunt aka Maligno of Earth-Two, counterpart to Doctor Xa-Du who with his wife used sinister science to torment Superboy and, years later, Superman.

Zoners manipulated the Flash three times, first when Luther Jarvis mentally controlled the Scarlet Speedster, sending him against Earth-Two's Spectre. After this, a quartet of crooked Kryptonians led by Jarvis’ counterpart Professor Va-Kox orchestrated a race between Flash and Earth-One's Superman, in order to open a path out of the Zone. And later Va-Kox’s allies mentally manipulated Flash against Superman shortly before the Fastest Man Alive’s death during the Crisis on Infinite Earths.

And, in fact, the Zoner's counterparts originated on Earth-Two, and as such encountered either that world's Superman or his allies in the Justice Society. The scientist that pierced the barrier into what was known as the Fourth Dimension, was Anton Unreal aka Uriah, who like his cosmic twin Quex-Ul aka Charlie Kweeskill of Krypton-One knew secrets of these shadowy realms. While those in the Zone could become phantoms, so too were the so-called “Spirit-Masters” who were other individuals whom Unreal exiled to this realm prior to his imprisonment of Steve Trevor. This led to his girlfriend Wonder Woman intervening to save him. Several of these Masters had been around a few years earlier when they battled the heroine’s Justice Society teammate the Spectre. While the fearsome phantoms that plagued Earth-Two actually originated from that planet rather than their universe's Krypton like their dopplegangers, they had powers comparable to the Kryptonians within their twilight dimensional analogue to the Zone.

Foremost among these was the megalomaniac Zor, the counterpart of General Zod himself. Although he was originally a prominent military leader of Krypton-One, Zod sought to usurp control of the planet's government then ruled by the Science Counsel, which he bitterly opposed. To that end, Zod crested an army of imperfect duplicate of himself to provide him the "manpower" to enact his scheme. Failing at this, his banishment into the Zone began an adversarial relationship between he and the house of El of whom Jor-El was his prime opponent. As the scientist perished along with most Kryptonians, he sought victory over his foes’ son, Kal-El. However, Kal as Superman repeatedly outmaneuvered the military strategist, despite Zod's near perpetual command over his fellow Zone prisoners. Zor was himself a disenfranchised member of a mysterious organization that decided to use his superhuman powers for conquest. This led him towards several battles versus his arch enemy the Spectre, and eventually appeared as a globe-being to battle the Justice Society, much as Zod had employed globe brains from space versus the Legion of Super-Heroes. Zor was kept imprisoned for indeterminate periods of time by his adversary.

Then there was the Kryptonian scientist Kru-El, cousin of Jor-El who like his counterpart Vandal Savage was a procurer of illegal weaponry with a thirst for power. Two other malevolent masterminds in  Gaz-Or and  Bandar were among the worst of their lot, given the crimes they orchestrated. There were others such as Thul-Kar and Kalthoon who styled themselves as prophets, although they were actually master manipulators. Then there were the more common criminals, such as Gra-Mo and Ace Chance. who along with countless others were occupants of these other realms adjacent to the twin Earths sought to plunder from others. 

Even some unspecified occupants of the Spectral Zone or Fourth Dimension enlisted by Kalthoon who like various unidentified prisoners of the Phantom Zone were recruited into Zod's phantom army.

Tale of Two Kryptons: Jor-El's Hypothesis

Indeed, Jor-El of Krypton-One recognized the probability of a parallel planet to his own, one where he may be able to save himself, his family and his entire civilization. Devising a projector that would transport individuals across the dimensional void to the vibratory coordinates wherein he calculated that Krypton-Two would reside, he instead found himself trapped in the Phantom Zone. The same Phantom Zone that would become the prison for his world's most corrupt convicts. An interesting aside, the fact that Jor-El was generally correct in his analytical estimates, including his unfinished thought that perhaps Krypton-Two no longer existed (it hadn't, destroyed decades previous) seems to indicate that the extra-dimensional entity known as Aethyr that manifested itself as the Phantom Zone existed between these two vibratory planes. Indeed, this account indicates that it bridged the interdimensional void to the locale where Krypton-Two once was, sensing catastrophe like that which occured when two galaxies merged spawning Aethyr itself. Aethyr's doppleganger, the dimensional plane known as the Fourth Dimension, existed in Earth-Two's universe although it was discovered not by Zor-L but by some Earth-Two megalomaniacs like Zor, Anton Unreal, Bandar and Kalthoon. And the Phantom Zone also tied into other universes, as decades ago Jur-Ll of Krypton-Three journeyed from there into the Kandor of Krypton-One!


Aethyr eventually merged with Mister Mxyzptlk to torment Kal-El one final time, unleashing the Phantom Zone criminals before absorbing them once more into its pocket-dimensional realm. Meanwhile, Mxyzptlk's counterpart Mister Mxyztplk remained in good standing in the fifth dimensional land of Zrfff as its surrogate ruler, unlike his twin who was a perpetual perpetrator of pranks. The Earth-Two Mxyztplk kept what little sanity he had while the aeons old entity of Aethyr was no more when Earth-One's Mxyzptlk absorbed him. At this point, the Phantom Zone as it was constituted ceased to exist (although due to its timeless nature, the modern day version was accessed in the 30th century when its one good resident, Mon-El, was freed by the Legion of Super-Heroes). Meanwhile, Zrfff attached to Earth-One was destroyed while its Earth-Two twin remained a vibrant world in its own 5th dimension.

Twice-Told Tales: The Dark Side of Superman

Superman's code against murder is essential to the mythos of the Man of Tomorrow. On his home world of Krypton, instead of executing criminals they were exiled from that world, residing in suspended animation in rocket ships. Later, on Earth-One, the Phantom Zone projector banished these felons to that alternate dimension. However, on two pseudo planets two Supermen ignored their illustrative past, and principals, if only momentarily.

As a side note, the silver age Superman was once tasked by the Bizarro duplicates of himself to create a variation on his own Earth-One which became Htrae.  The golden age Superman encountered a world in outer space made into a carbon-copy of Earth-Two, created by one of the Evil Three Kryptonians named Mala seeking revenge on his former jailer, named "Counterfeit Earth".

Flash forward to after the Crisis on Infinite Earths, when all surviving universes were melded into one core universe. However, the Time Trapper created an artificial pocket universe which replicated Earth-One from which he spawned his own Superboy to become a sleeper agent against his foes the Legion of Super-Heroes. In this universe, three Phantom Zone criminals were also duplicated in the forms of General Zod, Quel-Ul and Zaora. After he defeated the trio by depowering them with Gold Kryptonite with the threat they would one day return seek vengeance on his own mainstream Earth, Superman used the green variation of his world's meteorite rock to forever vanquish these three threats.

Back on the pre-Crisis Earth-Two, its Superman was molded with a less lofty view of the world as he was separated from his exalted Kryptonian heritage until later in life. Hence, after once more defeating the Evil Three of Mala, Kizo and U-Ban, he did the seemingly unthinkable.

As he again outsmarted the rogues, Kal-L realized that were they to return a third time Earth-Two might not survive their sustained attack. Hence, after sealing them within a flying globe of his design, the Man of Steel lined the vessel with Kryptonite and left them in the depths of space. Years later, in Action Comics #484, the column entitled "Two Men of Tomorrow" comparing the twin Supermen states of Earth-Two's Kal-L: "The only other survivor of Krypton is his cousin Kara (Power Girl)". Ominous words indeed!

Eventually, both the Pocket Universe and that in which Earth-Two resided in ceased to exist, their history erased and with them these shameful incidents. Still they illustrate how dangerous the most powerful men in the world were when threatened by triads of terror!

Masters of Mesmerizing: Duet of Do-Gooders and Deviants

Jax-Ur was a renegade scientist originally of Krypton-One. Seeking to utilize rockets from his planetary space counsel in order to conquer his world, he inadvertently sent one such rocket to the moon of Wegthor, destroying both it and its settlers. Banished for an eternity in the penal prison plane known as the Phantom Zone, Jax-Ur and several other prisoners survived their world's destruction, and sought vengeance on their jailer Jor-El's son Kal-El who grew up on Earth-One as Superman. Over the centuries within the Zone, Jax-Ur developed enmity with Kal-El's ally Lar "Mon-El" Gand, kept in the Zone until a cure was found for his fatal lead poisoned condition.

Zator, a dutiful disciple of his realm's ruling counsel known as the Seven. When he disobeyed them by saving two infants known as Richard Occult and Rose Psychic, he was tasked with training them which helped them to develop their powers and return to their native world of Earth-Two.

Jax-Ur on on occasion assisted Superman in defeating the alien Black Zero, who was instrumental in the destruction of Krypton. Zator recruited Occult on one occasion, granting him a superhero costume with equipment in order to assist him in beat the alien invader known as Koth.

Both Jax-Ur and Zator could transform into phantoms, lift great object by simply willing themselves to do so, exerted force of mind abilities, wore a bald hairstyle with mustache adequately, and loved green and yellow garb. While having minds of their own, there was inherent nobility and rebellious in both men although one was selfish and the other selfless. 

Twice-Told-Tales: Greedy Globes Get Gobsmacked

The Brain-Globes of Rambat-One and the Duna-Globes of Rambat-Two were once bipedal creatures of their native worlds until they learned how to store their mind in spherical structures allowing them to float through space. While Rambat-One was nearing extinction as a world, prompting its surviving inhabitants to scout out another world they could transport back to their solar system.

Rambat-Two apparently did not have this affliction. However, its inhabitants left their world behind, but for entirely different and far nobler reasons.

Locating Earth-One which would could sufficiently replace their own world, the Brain-Globes sought to mentally manipulate Superboy into moving his adopted world to their sector of the galaxy. To this end, they tried to employee their assistance of General Zod and other prisoners of the Phantom Zone. When this tactic failed, they then exerted their mind control on three members of the Legion of Super-Heroes. After these heroes were freed from prison their influence, they tasked the Legion of Super-Pets with vanquishing and banished the Globes.

The Duna sought to reclaim a member of their race in Zor, who mentally assumed the identity of one of the Duna, and in turn used that creature to then mind-control toy maker Willie Wonder. Wonder made several devices that caused problems for the the Justice Society, although those heroes as well as a trio of Duna were able to capture and banished Zor from Earth-Two forevermore.
