Bot Boys Battle Brain & Brawn Baddies

Robotman was mortal enemies with the Brotherhood of Evil, who were the arch-foes of his team, the Doom Patrol. While the Brotherhood's body-less leader, the Brain, was their leader... his arms and legs were his faithful simian servant Monsieur Mallah, a gorilla whom he imbued with super-intelligence. For years, these rival organizations battled with one another. with the Brain constantly coveting the metallic body of Robotman, who like himself was once human before his natural body perished. To that end, the malevolent mind often pitted Mallah against Robotman, with the two forming an intense antagonistic relationship with one another as two beings with superstrength.

On a parallel planet in another universe, that world's Robotman very nearly himself faced a brain-without-a-body and his bestial brother in battle. Originally born Jason Rogers, who became a rich industrialist, a second persona resided in the deep recesses of his mind for decades. This being was his nameless twin brother, who while not having formed a body within their mother's womb, had his mind perserved alive through mysterious means. This "Brain" exerted his mental might to form a fourth-dimensional body, which manifested when the docile Jason Rogers transformed into the inhuman genius, the Monster*!

And so it was, on December 6th, 1941 in Washington, D.C., the Monster was tasked with eliminating three members of the Justice Society of Earth-Two, those men being the Atom, Doctor Mid-Nite and Hawkman. Off in the distance, ready to assist, was the disguised Robotman... who saw how his fellow heroes quickly defeated the Monster. As that bedeviling Brain transformed back into Jason Rogers. Robotman departed the scene while the twins were subdued.

Soon after this, a different doomed Patrol formed when three members of the French Foreign Legion gained shape-shifting bodies, similar to those of the remaining Doom Patrol members. That trio of Earth-One Patrollers consisted of Rita "Elasti-Girl" Farr, Larry "Negative Man"  Trainor and Garfield "Beast Boy" Logan**. Their doppelgängers of the Earth-Two Patrol were Fred, Pedro and Slim, resolving to use their abilities of growth and shrinking (like Rita), energized form (like Larry), and animal metamorphosis (like Garfield) to battle the Nazis during World War II.

By 1947, Jason Rogers was in a comatose state, which prevented his twin the Monster from asserting control over his body. Thus, he melded his mind with John Gresham, a man attempting to claim sole inheritance of his late brother’s fortune. When Fred, Pedro and Slim investigated, the trio were thrust into the fourth dimension by the Monster, who stole their superpowers for himself and his two allies in their synthetic energy bodies. Despite these abilities, the terrible trio were unable to defeat the Patrol, who returned to the third dimension of Earth-Two where they exposed the Monster's new "brother" John Gresham as a crook.

This was to date the last documented appearance of the Monster, although a similar begrudging beast would work with a disembodied brain decades later, in the form of the Ultra-Humanite. Originally a super-intelligent scientist whose brain was artifically augmented, Ultra's frail human body perished when exposed to one of his deadly devices, and had numerous body transfers which each housed his magnificent mind for extended periods of time.

Eventually, Humanite… like his Earth-One counterpart Brainiac… upgraded the housing encasing his cerebral center. Although instead of storing his mind inside a robotic body (which he tried to do when holding Robotman hostage yet failing to complete the procedure), Ultra had his brain implanted in the body of a mutated albino gorilla. Like Gorilla Grodd, this Ultra-Humanite possessed vast telepathic powers, which separated these two super-simians apart from their fellow contemporary beasts, Monsieur Mallah and the Monster of their respective Earths.

Monsieur Mallah himself assumed another identity much as Monster had in his later appearance against the Patrol. Clad in an emerald cape, garish green garb and a bestial full face mask, Mallah fabricated the alias of financier Abu Hassan. Abu acquired another monetary holdings to develop a financial empire with the intent of luring the Doom Patrol’s principal ally, and Elasti-Girl’s husband, Steve “Mento” Dayton. Luring the mental millionaire into a trap to use as bait for the Patrol, Hassan failed to secure Dayton and seemingly folded his riches into the Brain’s Brotherhood and their criminal endeavors.

Unlike the Earth-One Patrol's repeated clashes with the dastardly duo of brain and brawn, the Earth-Two Robotman and his world’s Patrol only faced their version of the brain and brawn once each. Years later, Brain and Monsieur Mallah found new foes in Garfield’s new teammates in the New Teen Titans, together with the Brain founding a revitalized Brotherhood of Evil, with the goal of seeking revenge against their former ally turned adversary in Madame Rouge.

Rogers and his Monster twin brother were recurring thorns in the side of the Justice Society of America as well as the All-Star Squadron and the terrific trio of Pedro, Fred and Slim throughout the 1940s.

* The Brain’s counterpart before his human body perished was Jason Rogers, while Monsieur Mallah’s beastial counterpart was the Monster.

** Rita, Larry and Gar wore similarly clad costumes which matched one another in style, as had those uniforms worn by Fred, Pedro and Slim.

Bedeviling Brains Brawn Beauties & Bad Boys

The Brain was a former French scientist whose body had expired had his brain transplanted into a sophisticated receptacle connected to a large computer network. This procedure was performed by his assistant, Monsieur Mallah, who had himself formerly been an ape that was granted vast intellect by his master's treatments. Together, they formed the Brotherhood of Evil, adding to their ranks former actress Laura DeMille who after a traumatic accident became the shape-changing Madame Rouge. She repeatedly tormented the Doom Patrol, and even on one occasion clashed with the Flash along with them!

There was a Monster Society of Evil on Earth-Two that paralleled Brain's Hood of Brothers, even with its own mad mind leading it… the alien Mister Mind who assembled it. However, it was another crooked cranium and his bestial associate who were counterparts to the Brain and Mallah, that being industrialist Jason Rogers and his twin brother who never developed a body. This disembodied brain willed Jason's body into becoming the beast-like Monster. His brother Jason Roger’s ex-wife Kathe adopted the criminal alias of Princess Helene, as her psyche was traumatized by discovering of her ex-husband’s twin nature. Like her counterpart Madame Rouge, Princess Helene was able to alter her form and battled both the doomed Patrol of Earth-Two, considering of Fred, Pedro and Slim… as well as her world’s Flash.

Along the way, other super villains such as Garguax and General Immortus joined the Brotherhood for a time, on each occasion battling and facing defeat versus the Doom Patrol. The counterparts on Earth-Two of Garguax and his alien masters were a similar set of alien gamesman who abducted several star athletes including the golden age Flash, who ended up defeating them which forced them to return their captives to Earth-Two.

While Immortus was formerly an ancient Egyptian Pharoah who had come into possession of an immortality seeing which kept him alive for millennia, his doppleganger likewise possessed the gift of immortality through other means. This man, Khalis, came into conflict with ancient protector Nabu in Egypt. Kept imprisoned into the 20th century, Khalis returned to claim his former object of power which his old foe removed from him an gave to his apprentice Doctor Fate of Earth-Two. Around the same time that Khalis made his failed attempt at restoring what he once had, likewise Immortus had sought out Arani, the wife of his former employee turned arch enemy in Niles Caulder who took the new immortality serum originally intended to revive the General's lost youth. Once more the Doom Patrol defeated Immortus, who like Khalis seemingly perished.

Other recruits in the Monster Society were Ramulus and Nyola as well as the willful stone brute known as Oom, which made this evil assemblage a true threat to the All-Star Squadron.

After a number of encounters, the Brotherhood fractured as Rogue rebelled against both the Brotherhood's Brain who was her master and the Patrol's Chief whom she loved, seemingly destroying both groups. The Monster Society had fractured leadership wherein its first leader Mister Mind left that Earth for another, then its second leader Oom was destroyed. While never joining the Monster Society even though it had the same name as the villain himself, the Monster was recruited by time tyrant Per Degaton into a group of supervillains who battled the All-Star Squadron in the early 1940's. And the Monster would share opponents with Robotman and his teammates as would his world's version of the Brotherhood of Evil, in the form of Mister Mind’s Monster Society of Evil.

Back on Earth-One, the Brain assembled a second team of villains from around the world to compose his new Brotherhood of Evil, this time battling the New Teen Titans and their ally Robotman. Meanwhile, the original Psycho-Pirate enlisted fellow cellmate Roger Hayden to become his protegee in foul play on Earth-Two with Hayden dueling with Hourman and Doctor Fate.

As a result, two teams of a sort were formed to torment the heroes of their worlds.  First, there was the fear-inducing Phobia (Angela Hawkins) and Psycho-Pirate II both of whom used their abilities to affect other humans' emotions. Next there was dimensional traveling Warp and Mayoor, which cause their foes to phase out of reality. Next there was mentally manipulating Mango the Mighty and Houngan aka Jean Louis-Droo, who used science to control men.. Fonalu, Psycho-Pirate solicited the services of former crime boss Gat Benson, transformed by green plasma into a gigantic beast much like that of the Brotherhood's Plasmus, who used to be Otto Von Furth until his physiology had been altered due to exposure to radioactive radium.

The Brotherhood of Evil invaded the African country of Zandia and later resurfaced in America, never finding success in the schemes of their leader. Psycho-Pirate struck off on his own after his previous allies Wotan, Mayoor and Benson had failed him, controlling a team of Justice Society members Green Lantern, Flash and Batman until the trio were defeated as was their puppet-master by the rest of the team. The Pirate then allied himself with the Secret Society of Super-Villains until the Crisis when he became the Anti-Monitors right-hand henchmen for a brief time.

Bodiless Brains / Malicious Monsters / Masquerading Madames

Mysterious madmen maneuver malevolent minions methodically. Well, the men in question are the mysterious Brain with his arch ape Monsieur Mallah and their shape-shifting ally Madame Rouge from Earth-One, as well as their counterparts the insane Jason Rogers who possessed a disembodied brain attached to the bestial body of the Monster along with the shape-shifting siren Princess Helene.

These scheming terrifying triads came to the attention of the Doom Patrol as well as the members of the All-Star Squadron and Justice Society. But what was the secret behind these vile villains? How did they mirror one another? Indeed, who were these mysterious miscreants?

Turns out the Brain was a former French scientist whose body perished but his brain was preserved thanks to the timely operation of Mallah, a mentally augmented gorilla that had served him for years prior to the death of his body, and formed Earth-One's Brotherhood of Evil to do his bidding as a sinister syndicate across the globe!

The counterpart of that sinister syndicate was Mister Mind's Monster Society of Evil on Earth-Two. As for the Monster, he only allied briefly with Per Degaton’s time-traveling team of supervillains. The Monster and his twin brother Jason each took turns controlling his body, with Jason being the dominant persona until evil impulses caused the disembodied mind of his twin (who had never developed a body of his own) to transform Roger's body into the bestial physical form of the Monster. Like Monsieur Mallah, the Monster had both massive strength, vast intellectual capabilities and inhuman features.

While the Brain recruited various criminals to form his Brotherhood of Evil, all freaks like himself and his ape assistant, Mister Mind sought out various adversaries of the Justice Society of America whom he despised for a perceived slight. While the Monster Society had a sole villainess member named Priestess Nyola, the Brotherhood’s sole villainess member was Madame Rouge.

French actress Laura DeMille was brainwashed and then operated on by the Brain into becoming the Madame Rouge. Shortly therafter, the Brain gave DeMille the ability to alter her features as well as elasticize her body.

DeMille would ultimately aid the Doom Patrol as she fell in love with its leader Niles Caulder, then betray both the Patrol and the Brotherhood. After Niles and the Patrols death, she attempted to conquer an African country and finally met permanent defeat when she perished while battling the New Teen Titans, Robotman and a new Brotherhood.

DeVille's counterpart on Earth-Two was Kathe Rogers, the ex-wife of Jason Rogers, who experienced trauma upon discovering her existence ex-husband's body-less twin brother the Monster. This event fragmented her fragile psyche, unleashing an evil alter persona while causing the “death” of Kathe Rogers. Now assuming the identity of Princess Helene, she moved to Crete and involved herself with a local dictator. Together, the pair hatched a scheme to conquer a latin america country, using special liquids which could alter men's mental and physical appearance. Helene suffered defeat at the hands another doomed Patrol, composed of Fred, Pedro and Slim.

After this loss, Helene retreated to Keystone City in the United States, using a variation of the liquid to transform men into various animal forms. This time, she was opposed by the Flash, and while seeking escape capture from the Scarlet Speedster, she ended up transforming herself into a black widow that was then crushed by one of her animal minions.

Similar villains in the Monster Society of Evil on Earth-Two filled the void as to disembodied brains like Mister Mind and shape-shifters Mister Who. Eventually both the Brotherhood and Society fragmented with the Brain and Mallah forming a new incarnation of their team with four powerful pawns, while the Monster was later employed by Per Degaton into a new assemblage of time tossed tyrants in the early 1940's who battled the All-Star Squadron during their initial formation.
