Green Globs vs Glowing Globes: Good vs Greed

The Guardians of the Universe, that is the universe of Earth-One, sought to restore order to their chaotic realm through various means. First, the converted the rogue member of the race Krona, transforming him into a globe orbiting the expansive cosmos for all eternity. Second, the Guardians exile energy incompatible with their own emerald energy, which the concentrated and projected into the heart of a star in Earth-Two's universe. Third, they developed a series of powerful protectors, which they dispatched throughout the galaxies surrounding their planet Oa.

Among these avenging agents were the android Manhunters, who eventually became defective as they saw all living beings as inherently evil, which they saw as falling into the mission statement and purpose to remove all evil from the universe. Following this, the Guardians developed numerous power batteries and power rings which drew energy from these, appointing living agents throughout thousands of space sectors as Green Lanterns. To further aid in civilizations untouched by the Lanterns' activities, the Guardians also developed sentient Green Globs, empowered by their emerald energy to teach individuals moral lessons. One such Green Glob arrived on Earth-One during the 1960s, prior to the appointment of that world's first Green Lantern, Hal Jordan.

Meanwhile, in last 1941, Earth-Two was invaded the the exiled Globe of Evil. This entity sought out an individual nursing animosity which it could harness to split its essence into multiple globes. Together with this human, former boxer and trainer Joe Morgan, the Evil-Globes fomented a conflict between Joe's three former students.... Ted "Wildcat" Grant, Al "Atom" Pratt, and Jim "Guardian" Harper... versus Alan "Green Lantern" Scott, Jay "Flash" Garrick and Diana "Wonder Woman" Prince. Once freed of the globes' mental control, the three protegees of Morgan joined their three former foes to track down Joe and combat the original Globe.

Whatever Happened to the Buddak?

We have previously considered versions of the Maltusians existing in the Earth-Two universe. While those beings originating from the planet Maltus in the Earth-One universe migrated to the planet Oa, this did not occur with their counterparts. As there was no corresponding world at the center of their universe like Oa (or in other positive matter universes) these individuals remained there and became know as the Buddak. Unlike the benevolent Guardians of the Universe, whom the Maltisians became, the Buddak sought personal power. Seeking to create a world in the center of their universe just as Oa was in its realm, they tried to remake Earth-Two into such a planet. Doctor Fate and the Superman of Earth-One defeated three Buddak, others remained on their world.

We gain insight into a probable scenario when, years later, the Controller assumed control of a world like the one they originated from, in order to develop weaponry to help achieve their goal of multiversal order. One such device, the Miracle Machine, produced unexpected results on its world leaving it in shambles. Two Controllers are shown left behind to deal with the consequences of their disastrous creation. The Machine teleports to another planet in Earth-One’s dimensional plane, which briefly causes Superman and his Clark Kent selves to separate.

The logical assumption is that the Controllers setup their central operations base on the Buddak* world, left without leaders as their three primary overlords perished in their earlier battle with Superman and Doctor Fate. We can make this connection, as it was later revealed that they were a faction of Maltus who disagreed with the Guardians faction as to how to govern their universe. These Controllers ended up moving to “a specific segment of the multiple universes”. The closest and most accessible universe to the one they came from was that is Earth-Two.

Hence, left forsaken by its previous overlords of the Buddak and then left severely damaged by its next overseers in the Controllers. Their planet was seemingly left is a dissolute state. 

One of these two Controllers filled the role in that universe corresponding to the Monitor and Anti-Monitor in the Earth-One positive matter universe and the anti-matter universe of Qward. The other was the Controller impersonating the Time Trapper who tormented Wonder Woman and later the Super Friends on Earth-One,

* Since the remaining Buddak migrated to Earth-Two centuries earlier, to become the so-called leprechauns, this alternate Maltus found its once thriving culture henceforth no more.

Q-Energy: Mysterious Radiation from Another Universe

Kryptonite is the most harmful substance a superhumanly powered Kryptonian can encounter, as extended exposure to it can be fatal. However, this is not the only deadly radiation that can cripple a Superman. There is also... Q-Energy!

The Superman of Earth-One first encountered Q-Energy in February 1968, shortly after a prominent scientist named Lorraine Lewis discovered it. She had on three separate occasions tried to assist the man whom she secretly loved, Superman, using her intelligence and her inventions. However, each time, it was three other women with double L initials... Lois Lane, Lana Lang, Lori Lemaris... who ultimately helped him and outshined Lorraine. Seeking revenge, she devised a trap harnessing the Q-Energy that would kill Superman, although this backfired as he escaped... and it killed her instead.

However, when explaining this mysterious radiation to Superman, Lewis said that it came from "another dimensional universe". And a few years later, some agents sent by the Weaponers of Qward from the Anti-Matter Universe used weapons charged with Q-Energy to immobilize Superman, and then use him as a conduit to mentally mesmerize the entire population of Earth-One in order to control and colonize it. Thankfully, the android Red Tornado proved immune to this energy, and destroyed Qward's device freeing humanity. During this encounter, Kaman who led the Weaponers, was curious as to why Tornado was immune to it. Part of this was due to his android nature, part due to his origin.

Red Tornado originated in the Earth-Two universe, having crossed over to Earth-One while saving the world of his "birth". Interestingly, another resident from his universe, Princess Ramia of the planet Myrg, possessed this energy. Ramia brought Q-Energy with her in June 1966 to Earth-One, while being pursued by her tyranical suitor Prince Peril, using it to enable Doiby Dickle's cab Goitrude to fly. Ramia, Doiby and Peril returned to Earth-Two's universe... with the latter defeated by the Green Lanterns of both Earths... while the former two ended up marrying. However, some of Ramia's Q-Energy remained on Earth-One*, later discovered first by Lorraine. Meanwhile, Kaman’s technicians on Qward harnessed a version of Q-Energy in their universe to empower the Thunderers’ Qwa-Bolts..

Q-Energy's properties include, but are not limited to: anti-gravity or flying, mind-control, potent energy blasts. It seems this may be the Earth-Two universe's equivalent to the emerald energy harnessed by the Guardians of the Universe and their Green Lantern Corps... a portion of which they sent to Earth-Two's universe to stabilize this subsection of the multiverse. It seems, that the Q-Energy arriving from Earth-Two to Earth-One helped rebalance both universes... as each had the others' energy**. As would the Anti-Matter universe of Qward.

* After the taxi cab Goitrude was injected with Q-Energy by Ramia, the energized form of Sinestro entered the taxi and absorbed the energy from it. Sinestro was then restored to his physical form and became a carrier of the energy, spreading it both throughout Earth-One’s plane of existence and that of Qward’s, where he periodically returned to on occasion. 

This was prior to the time when two warring alien races used Q-Energy on Superman, and shortly thereafter when the Qwardians’ invasion of Earth-One which Red Tornado thwarted in 1978. It may be that, due to the prevelance of alternate emerald energy from Earth-One's universe sent by the Guardians, this surpressed the amount of Q-Energy present in the Earth-Two universe where it originated.

** Q-Energy also existed in Existence Level 24 in the 86th planet known as Gobdor which like Earth-Two was in a parallel dimensional plane to that of Earth-One. A tele-vis director used a device to manipulate this energy against the Flash of Earth-One, controlling molecular bonds in water and causing the speedster to become super-heavy. Similarly, the Thinker and later Vandal Savage used a heavy ray device versus his arch-enemy, the Flash of Earth-Two. Undoubtedly, this was most probably powered by Q-Energy. As for the Earth-One Flash being a carrier of Q-Energy prior to Princess Ramia's appearance on Earth-One, this seems improbable as the Scarlet Speedster had complete control over his molecules, and returned to normal following his encounter with the Gobdor people.

Infinity Stones of the DC Multiverse

Just as there were six stones that each had unique powers granted to their possessors on Earth-616, so to on other Earths there were versions of these same objects with different names and distinct histories. Each of these were crafted from alien meteorites, and had profound impact on both Earths One and Two. 

The Guardians of the Universe concentrated emerald energy into a Central Power Battery on the planet of Oa, with portions of its energy siphoned off into thousands of miniature lanterns throughout the cosmos, used by the Green Lantern Corps in the Earth-One univese. A portion of this energy was transplanted into the Earth-Two realm which made the Starheart and the Council of Stars, protecting that universe. Hal Jordan and Alan Scott were given lanterns and their power rings.

The Star Sapphire was an object in each universe given to specific women who would become queens over alien races of immortal warrior women such as the Zamoran and Infanta. These sapphires allowed the user to traverse space and bend it to their will. Carol Ferris, Dela Pharon, Deborah Camille Darnell and an unidentified woman each used these gems.

Twin alien meteorites were formed into the Orb of Ra of Earth-One and the Hammer of Thor of Earth-Two. The Orb was capable of transmuting elements while the Hammer was able to manipulate the elements. While Metamorpho and Hawkman used these globes for good, Simon Stagg and Ultra-Humanite used them for evil.

Each Earth had their own Ruby of Life and Ring of Life, which had the ability to animate objects when worn by various men from around both Earths. The Ruby of Earth-Two was temporarily displaced by its owner Sargon from its native realm, but eventually returned from Earth-One when the effect of three such rubies corrupted him.

And then there was the distinct diverse gems known as the Black Diamond of Earth-One and the Powerstone of Earth-Two, which granted the owners such as Eclipso and Alexie Luthor to vast power of the mind. These gems brought forth evil in men like Bruce Gordon, Luthor and Ultra-Humanite.

Interestingly, when the Power Stone and Hammer of Thor were brought together, they increased in power. This was similar to when the rubies and rings of life were present together, especially with Green Lantern's Power Ring. 

There were two other sets of powerful gems which, when combined, gave their owners' tremendous powers. Within the Earth-One universe, in the Gemworld dimension, twelve stones existed that when harnessed together into a breastplate were a source of tremendous power. These included the following gems: amethyst, aquamarine, moonstone, sapphire, turquoise, emerald, opal, garnet, diamond, ruby, sardonyx and topaz. This breastplace gave the evil Dark Opal tremendous power, which almost enabled him to defeat Princess Amethyst and her colleagues.

 
Within the Earth-Two universe, these same gems were found on that world, and were likewise merged in an ancient mechanism devised to forge these together. These included the following gems: diamond, yellow topaz, emerald, bluish-white diamond, and garnet. 

With these stones combined, they made the Lifestone which could bring inanimate objects to life. With this. the evil Doctor Brett nearly defeated the Seven Soldiers of Victory, with the dormant statue of Atlas gaining sentience and battling the heroes. However, the Soldiers outsmarted Brett in the end. 

Dark Opal had previously used his considered power to torment the citizens of the interdimensional locale known as Gemworld, opposed by Princess Amethyst. His Earth-Two counterpart Wotan had similar abilities and sought to rule all reality, although he was repeatedly opposed by his arch-enemy Doctor Fate along with Inza Cramer Nelson, girlfriend and later wife to Fate’s alter ego Kent Nelson. Unlike Opal, Wotan turned to scientific gadgetry to supplement his innate abilities. Eventually, Wotan was imprisoned in a interdimensional reality mirrored by that of Gemworld, kept immobile seemingly for all eternity!

Both Dark Opal and Doctor Brett perished following exposure to these gems. What became of their gems following the defeats of the gems’ owners is unknown, although their potential for causing havoc is highly potent should they still exist somewhere within the Multiverse.

Guardians of the Universe... & Ireland... friends of the Lanterns

In the initial universe that spawned a Multiverse, a race of immortal inhabitants journeyed from their native Malthus to planet Oa, in the center of that dimension. A small contingent journeyed to Earth-One to become a leprechaun race there.

Since there was no Oa in other universes, the counterparts of those other worlds known as Malthus would journey as large contingents to the next natural center of their universes, the planets of the humans.

On Earth-Two, a large number of these beings became the leprechauns who encountered Wonder Woman and Green Lantern of those worlds. For the heroine, her acquaintance Moon O'Day was the doppleganger of Fergus, sidekick of Earth-One's Jack O'Lantern. Coincidentally, it was Fergus and his pals who created a lantern which Jack used that was similar to that of the Green Lantern Corps. Other allies of Earth-Two's Wonder Woman were Shappy, Hoppy and Woggle, who were counterparts  of the most honored of the Guardians of the Universe, those being Ranakar, Herupa Hando Hu, and Paz Pinder Pol.

One Guardian, Appa Ali Apsa, was assigned to journey with Lantern and his pal Green Arrow in search of understanding humanity. As a result, Appa forsook his allegiance with the Guardians and became a humanoid and mortal. As Old Timer, he was an ally and friend of humanity. His counterpart was Owen Cooley, a leprechaun who believed he was related to Doiby Dickles, the sidekick of Earth-Two's Green Lantern. Although a pest, he had a heart of gold and the pair took him as such. Although initially Alan Scott froze Owen in suspended animation, Cooley was later revived and disappeared afterwards.

Ancient Allies of the Green Gladiators: The Guardians and the Other Guys

Indeed, the Guardians of the Universe were the ultimate line of defense for the original positive matter universe. Having originated on the planet Malthus, these immortal beings migrated to planet Oa in the center of their reality to oversee and protect it.

Their counterparts on Earth-Two did not, as the Buddak were intent on harnessing their red version of the Guardian's emerald energy for evil. While some of the Guardians migrated from Malthus to Earth-One to become leprechauns such as Jack O'Lantern's pal Fergus, since there was no Oa in Earth-Two's universe, a larger proportion of their dopplegangers journeyed to that world such as Moon O'Day who met the golden age Wonder Woman, and fellow leprechauns such as Shaggy, Hoppy and Woggle as well as Owen Cooley who was a pest to Earth-Two's Green Lantern and a counterpart to former Guardian friend of Earth-One's Green Lantern known as "Old Timer" or by his real name Appa Ali Apsa.

However, there were some who took the place of the elite Malthusians who volunteered to serve infinity on Oa, in the form of a Chinese Embassy on Earth-Two that had operated throughout the centuries. Green Lantern had initially encountered them when he was given the power battery under unusual circumstances, as we will see. In 1945, one of their number contacted the hero's alter ego Alan Scott through the lantern to warn him of Solomon Grundy's return. These faithful keepers of the Green Lantern who opposed the Green Dragon Tong of its evil creator Chang mirrored the core members of the Green Lantern Corps throughout the centuries on Earth-One’s universe.

Just prior to this, Green Lantern and his pal Doiby were brought back to the medieval past of Camelot to protect it from a viable threat, and ended up meeting the protectors of the Green Flame's power battery who sent the pair back to their own era. Although not as regular in their contact with their apprentice as were the Guardians with Hal, Alan definitely appreciated them.

Exiles of the Planet Oa Terrorize the Multiverse

Early in the history of Earth-One's universe, a scientist of the planet Maltus named Krona had been obsessed with learning the secrets of the past. While on the world known as Oa, Krona used technology to witness the dawn of creation, something that had been strictly prohibited by his society as they had somehow become aware of the dire consequences for his actions. In fact, instead of attaining increased knowledge, Krona's contemptuous curiosity caused his own universe to be replicated an infinite number of times, spawning the Multiverse and the Anti-Matter Universe. For his crimes, his fellow Oans banished him to wander his universe by transforming him into a globe of energy. Not long thereafter, these same benevolent blue-skinned beings became the Guardians of the Universe.

Realizing that their own inherent evil might motivate them to do despicable deeds like that of the former brother, the Guardians purged all of their own negative energy and banished it in a globe of energy to wander Earth-Two's universe, where they had previously sent the Starheart. Once there, this malevolent globe gained sentience, much as its Earth-One doppelgänger, its Antithesis. Indeed the Guardians realized that the Starheart's energy would eventually locate a champion in that realm with powers similar to their own Green Lantern Corps, and were confident that this individual could combat the now sentient Evil-Globe.

And, in fact, this was accomplished when Alan Scott, wielding the green lantern and power ring, joined alongside his allies of the All-Star Squadron to vanquish this entity from Earth-Two when it merged with Joe Morgan in a fit of vengeance. The Evil Globe-Being merged with Morgan turned the former boxing trainer a gigantic being with a glowing bluish hue. Morgan aka "Nat Milligan" was the counterpart of Earth-One's Guy Gardner, aka the backup Green Lantern of Sector 2814. 

As for the Guardians’ self-replicating Evil-Globe, its cosmic twin was the Guardians’ Green Globs, sentient energy entities that assisted individuals throughout the universe. The benevolent Glob secretly intervened in the lives of numerous individuals throughout the 1960s, before leaving Earth-One just as the malevolent Globe had when it was exiled from Earth-Two during the early 1940s.

Decades later, another globe of energy arrived also on Earth-Two, only this was actually Krona who had merged with Alan's power ring. Leading Scott back over to Earth-One to meet up with his counterpart Hal Jordan, both Green Lanterns were soon summoned by the Guardians who advised them that Krona had reintegrated his physical body and threatened this universe. Side-by-side, this pair defeated the villain and consigned him once more into the void of space. 

A few years later, another immortal adversary of Green Lantern tied to a celestial object, the meteor-invigorated Vandal Savage, traveled from Earth-Two to Earth-One. Savage's goal was similar to that of Krona, to regain his physical vitality while dominating all others unopposed. However, he faced that world's Superman and Vandal's centuries old adversary, the Immortal Man, along with the Forgotten Heroes, who thwarted his sinister schemes. He apparently returned to Earth-Two following his defeat.

The counterpart of Krona, Ghan Uu, was one of three Buddak's from the planetary twin of Maltus who invaded Earth-Two a few years after Krona's incursion on both worlds, only he and his allies were defeated by Doctor Fate and a visiting Superman of Earth-One, who mirrored the Green Lantern's in their heroic actions in facing their age-old adversaries. While Krona returned from seemingly being wiped from existence, Ghan Uu and his two confederates perished at the conclusion of the cosmic crisis they attempted to unleash on Earth-Two and their universe.

Planets of the DC Multiverse: Awesome Ancient Aliens

Sometimes greater ages leads to greater wisdom, sometimes it leads to more intense folly. These two races which we'll now consider are their universe's oldest humanoids and, as such, accessed tremendous powers they use to achieved vastly different goals.

Earth-One's dimension was overseen a race originally called the Malthusians from the planet Malthus, journey to the center of the universe. Therein they found the planet Oa and became the Guardians of the Universe, harnessing emerald energies to empower android Manhunter agents and later the Green Lantern Corps to combat the evil spread by their evil brother, Krona at the beginning of the Multiverse.

And one such dimension in this Multiverse had a race equivalent to the Guardians in the form of the Buddak from their world of that name. Among these being were high lamas who also harnessed vast energies which they horded for themselves in order to achieve perfection. On one occasion in the 20th century, they attempted to remake Earth-Two by realigning the continents to accomplish this goal. As their own universe did not contain a counterpart of Oa (its twin was Qward in the Anti-Matter Universe), the closest equivalent was apparently Earth itself although the center of all other universes was the Rock of Eternity that originated from Earth-S. Thankfully, Doctor Fate and Earth-One's Superman stopped their evil plan, and this malevolent race disappeared thereafter. However, while residents of Malthus and Buddak reflected good and evil as parallel peoples, those of Malhtus that arrived on Oa to become the Guardians had a different class that reflected their ideals, originating on Earth-Two!
