Purple Rays: Mystery Energy that Heals and Harms

The purple ray, which manifested unique and opposing effects upon those exposed to it s mysterious form of energy. Understanding the nature of this radiation may uncover one of the fundamental forces with the DC Multiverse!

The first to discover this energy was the malevolent scientist known as the Ultra-Humanite. Unleashing its radiation upon citizens of the Earth-Two Metropolis, this led to multiple deaths labeled the "purple plague". Ultra's arch-enemy Superman tracked him down and, during a pivitol battle, between the two, was exposed its rays. Although this killed his body, the effects hadn't reached his brain as yet, which was preserved and implanted in the mind of his kidnap victim, actress Dolores Winters. In this form, Ultra tracked down the ancient Powerstone, last used by Alexie Luthor against their common foe until Superman defeated him and retrieved the stone. When Ultra soon after claimed the powerful object for himself, it manifested similar purple lights which the Humanite used to varying effect. This jewel seemed similar to another, that will be discussed later, from the 7th dimension.

On the Metropolis of Earth-One, a benevolent scientist named Frederic Fowe used his ultra-violet rays Steve Lombard to repair his knee, and unintentionally created a temporary energy duplicate of the football quarterback.

The second appearance of the purple ray was when Princess Diana developed it in order to revive airport Major Steve Trevor, who crashlanded on her homeland of the Earth-Two Paradise Island. Years later, Diana as Wonder Woman used this same purple ray on six of her male colleagues in the Justice Society, who like Trevor were thought dead... reviving them.

A version of the purple ray was also used on the Earth-One Paradise Island by that world's Wonder Woman, both to heal different individuals and to destroy a composite shadow creature attacking her homeland during the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Who developed this purple ray, predating Fowe's, is unknown.

It seems that this purple ray, or ultra-violet ray, is connected to the radiation generated by the star sapphires. These gemstones, created by the immortal Zamorans (who were a type of alien Amazonians, like the Wonder Womens' people), were similar to the Green Lanterns' emerald power rings (created by the Guardians of the Universe, male who were once of the same planet of Maltus as were the Zamorans). This purple energy also had the power of life and death, could create energy constructs, and seemingly bend reality to their user's will. This energy was tied in to their owner's feelings of love, hence if there was ill-will towards another it could be deadly, if a sense of nurturing it could heal.

While it was stated that the purple rays could revive the dead, this evidentally is not the case. As with both Earths' Steve Trevors, and the Justice Society of America members, they were in near-death like comas. Were this energy to actually restore dead ones to the living, the Earth-One Wonder Woman would have used it on her Justice League teammate Barry "Flash" Allen's late wife Iris, and the Earth-Two Wonder Woman would have used it on her former teammate Batman.

Others experimented with these revitalizing and regressive rays, such as those who’s science spawned Bag-O-Bones and the Skull.

Twice-Told-Tales: Black Spheres Face Justice

The Black Spheres were advanced entities from another universe where they developed over positive time into a hyper-intelligent state, until time was reversed. To avoid reverting to an inferior form now that they experienced negative time, these globular creatures entered the universe of Earths One and Two, with four of these beings on each Earth merging with human hosts. This granted the four individuals with superhuman abilities, yet also with a perversion towards committing evil acts.

While the events occurred simultaneously on these parallel planets, only the four adversaries of the Justice Society were identified and dealt with in the chronicled tales. As the Society battled Money Master, Gem Girl, Smashing Sportsman and How Chu... the League was facing four unidentified individuals with similar abilities. As Johnny Thunder's Thunderbolt pulled four Leaguers to the Society's Earth-Two to assist them, the Black Sphere bandit's Earth-One counterparts would be dealt with following this adventure.

From similar encounters with the League on Earth-One, we can ascertain the identities of the four recipients of Black Spheres on that world. These were museum curator Dexter Myles (who was impersonated by Doctor Light aka the Green Ghost), queen Dela Pharon (aka the second Star Sapphire), scientist turned boxer Karl Keller (aka the Annihilator) and Attucka*. These four apparently had some contact with the spheres, which each hero dealt with separately. Then mid-battle, three Leaguers (Superman**, Flash and Green Lantern) as well as a fourth (Green Arrow***) were pulled to Earth-Two by the Thunderbolt. Following the resolution of this tale, they were then dispatched to Earth-One where they dealt with their foes... with Aquaman having finished his conflict with Attucka without interruption.

* While the Black Sphere bandit candidates of Earth-One each had other sources of power, from Doctor Light's weaponry to Star Sapphire's gem to Annihilator's Kryptonian chemical... these were all augmented and enhanced by absorption of the spheres. 

** At the same time as Justice Society member Hourman battled a Black Sphere enhanced Superman, Hourman’s counterpart Prof Riley and the Challengers of the Unknown battled the electrical scientist known as the Powerman, also granted powers in part by a Black Sphere.

*** Green Areow appeared to have had a rough day like his three teammates due to his costume, battling an unidentified Black Sphere infected foe, although his tale is undocumented.

The Queen and the Quinn: Card Queen and Harlequin

While the word queen is synonymous with a female ruler, the word quinn is derived from an Irish term for a chief. Both denote wisdom, although this is only evident if they act is a wise manner when faced with life or death matters. Such was the case from the women known as the Harlequin.

Although the more notable portions of their costumed careers were as antagonists and then allies of a pair of Gotham City caped crusaders, Duela Dent and Molly Maynne also infiltrated illegal gangs in order to bring them down from the inside. While Maynne did this initially as a reluctant member of the Injustice Society, in order to save the life of her arch-foe and true love, she years later did this in an official capacity. As for Dent, she ended up joining the Teen Titans in order to defeat various supervillains whom they faced.

Following the dissolution of Earth-One's Titans, Duela abandoned her alter ego as Harlequin (and alternatively, as Joker's Daughter) when she was recruited into the criminal organization known as M.A.Z.E. Conceiving the identity of the Card Queen, Dent used a variety of card-themed gadgets which she initially used against her former teammate Robin, then later used against M.A.Z.E. agents themselves when she and Robin defeated them.

Following the dissolution of Earth-Two's Injustice Society, Molly's alias came to the attention of the F.B.I., who recruited her as the Harlequin to become their secret agent H-9. Using her illusion-generating spectacles and trick mandolin, the Harlequin was able to defeat her old teammate Sportsmaster and his gang while secretly aiding Lois Lane and her husband, Superman!

Interestingly, while Duela’s half dozen adventures alongside Robin (and on occasion Batgirl) mirrored a similar number of Molly’s capers alongside Green Lantern, additional tales of the Earth-Two Harlequin were echoed in the battles between the Earth-One Green Lantern and his girlfriend Carol Ferris’ alter ego of the Star Sapphire. Decades later, when Maynne reappeared as the Harlequin to aid the young Infinity, Inc. in a few of their cases, this mirrored Dent's tales alongside the Teen Titans as a member.

Determined Dimensional Damsels Face Fleet Footed Foes

The 7th Dimensional worlds known as Alkomar and Sapphire were the homes of a pair of bun-haired brunettes*, bringing with them dire consequences for entering the 3rd dimension of twin Earths.

Dorolla Kon was a benevolent scientist, Star Sapphire a malevolent monarch. Dorolla possessed superhuman speed while visiting Earth-One, Sapphire projected reality altering effects while invading Earth-Two. One sought knowledge, the other conquest, yet both threatened the realities of each Earth, when they met the Flash!

While Kon’s visit to Earth-One was merely to explore a new plane of existence, she noticed two strange effects. First, she gained super speed in the third dimension, Yet when she slowed down a shimmering effect occurred causing explosions. After developing a friendship with Flash and his alter ego Barry Allen, she parted ways with him when the diagnosed the problem. She would return later while tracking a criminal genius from Alkomar who stole speed from others. Together with Flash, she was able to apprehend the rogue.

As for Star’s visit to Earth-Two, this was with the intent of subjugating the women under her rulership while removing men from that world. Her reality altering effects were various, although much stronger in her dimensional plane. With the assistance of fellow scientist of Jay Garrick, Maria Flura, the Flash banished Sapphire. She would soon return, once more failing in her goals and vanishing indefinitely.

This Star Sappire was, like her counterpart Remoni-Notra who joined the Secret Society of Super-Villians of Earth-One, was a powerful femme fatale. Unlike her, however, this original version seem isolated from her people...where were the inhabitants of her seventh dimensional world? Did they flee following her tyranny, or had she wiped them out like she attempted doing to those on Earth-Two? Regardless, her desolote world was a pale reflection of the vibrant society that was on Alkomar, a universe away!

And then, there was another bun-headed beauty, a princess in a galaxy far... far away. But her tale is one to be told, on another day.

* Also allegedly originating from the 7th dimension is the matter transmuter named Roma, who pursued Jimmy Olsen during her two visits to Earth-One. Whether she was actually a native of that dimension is speculative, as she was a criminal whom the Interdimensional Patrol tracked down after she committed multiple homicides across four dimensions.

Infinity Stones of the DC Multiverse

Just as there were six stones that each had unique powers granted to their possessors on Earth-616, so to on other Earths there were versions of these same objects with different names and distinct histories. Each of these were crafted from alien meteorites, and had profound impact on both Earths One and Two. 

The Guardians of the Universe concentrated emerald energy into a Central Power Battery on the planet of Oa, with portions of its energy siphoned off into thousands of miniature lanterns throughout the cosmos, used by the Green Lantern Corps in the Earth-One univese. A portion of this energy was transplanted into the Earth-Two realm which made the Starheart and the Council of Stars, protecting that universe. Hal Jordan and Alan Scott were given lanterns and their power rings.

The Star Sapphire was an object in each universe given to specific women who would become queens over alien races of immortal warrior women such as the Zamoran and Infanta. These sapphires allowed the user to traverse space and bend it to their will. Carol Ferris, Dela Pharon, Deborah Camille Darnell and an unidentified woman each used these gems.

Twin alien meteorites were formed into the Orb of Ra of Earth-One and the Hammer of Thor of Earth-Two. The Orb was capable of transmuting elements while the Hammer was able to manipulate the elements. While Metamorpho and Hawkman used these globes for good, Simon Stagg and Ultra-Humanite used them for evil.

Each Earth had their own Ruby of Life and Ring of Life, which had the ability to animate objects when worn by various men from around both Earths. The Ruby of Earth-Two was temporarily displaced by its owner Sargon from its native realm, but eventually returned from Earth-One when the effect of three such rubies corrupted him.

And then there was the distinct diverse gems known as the Black Diamond of Earth-One and the Powerstone of Earth-Two, which granted the owners such as Eclipso and Alexie Luthor to vast power of the mind. These gems brought forth evil in men like Bruce Gordon, Luthor and Ultra-Humanite.

Interestingly, when the Power Stone and Hammer of Thor were brought together, they increased in power. This was similar to when the rubies and rings of life were present together, especially with Green Lantern's Power Ring. 

There were two other sets of powerful gems which, when combined, gave their owners' tremendous powers. Within the Earth-One universe, in the Gemworld dimension, twelve stones existed that when harnessed together into a breastplate were a source of tremendous power. These included the following gems: amethyst, aquamarine, moonstone, sapphire, turquoise, emerald, opal, garnet, diamond, ruby, sardonyx and topaz. This breastplace gave the evil Dark Opal tremendous power, which almost enabled him to defeat Princess Amethyst and her colleagues.

 
Within the Earth-Two universe, these same gems were found on that world, and were likewise merged in an ancient mechanism devised to forge these together. These included the following gems: diamond, yellow topaz, emerald, bluish-white diamond, and garnet. 

With these stones combined, they made the Lifestone which could bring inanimate objects to life. With this. the evil Doctor Brett nearly defeated the Seven Soldiers of Victory, with the dormant statue of Atlas gaining sentience and battling the heroes. However, the Soldiers outsmarted Brett in the end. 

Dark Opal had previously used his considered power to torment the citizens of the interdimensional locale known as Gemworld, opposed by Princess Amethyst. His Earth-Two counterpart Wotan had similar abilities and sought to rule all reality, although he was repeatedly opposed by his arch-enemy Doctor Fate along with Inza Cramer Nelson, girlfriend and later wife to Fate’s alter ego Kent Nelson. Unlike Opal, Wotan turned to scientific gadgetry to supplement his innate abilities. Eventually, Wotan was imprisoned in a interdimensional reality mirrored by that of Gemworld, kept immobile seemingly for all eternity!

Both Dark Opal and Doctor Brett perished following exposure to these gems. What became of their gems following the defeats of the gems’ owners is unknown, although their potential for causing havoc is highly potent should they still exist somewhere within the Multiverse.

Sensational Scarlet Spacefarers: Chris KL-99 and Astra

Chris KL was the first human baby to be born in space, and after his parents had been lost in their interstellar travels which left him an orphan, this encouraged the young man to join the Space Academy. As his rating with 99% perfect, his name was altered to Chris KL-99, at which point he traveled to various planets with the assistance of Halk the Martian and Jero the Venusian aboard their vessel the Pioneer. Charting these so that one day inhabitants of his parents' homeworld of Earth-One might colonize these. Among those whom he met were Superman and the Forgotten Heroes, displaced from the 20th century when they ventured to Chris' 21st century era. On this occasion, he met another spacefarer in the legendary Space Cabbie, a pilot who transported individuals throughout the solar system.

Astra was originally one of several young girls, rescued from their native Earth-Two as orphans by the Amazons and brought to the world of Infanta. There, underneath the unique atmosphere of that planet, these girls grew only to young adolscent as time seemed to stand still there. Astra was the preeminent lass in their midst and was thus made queen of the Infantas. When called upon to assist the women who had earlier saved them, Astra and the Infantas twice ventured to Earth-Two and worked alongside Wonder Woman. Inspired by the superheroines' example, during the 21st century Astra left her people and moved to Earth-Two, whereby she aged to young womanhood and became a reporter for the Transvideo News. She had several adventures alongside another spacefarer in Professor Elliott, Otha the Venusian and Plutonians.

Astra's former female subjects the immortal Infantas would undoubtedly have appointed a new queen, just as the immortal Zamarons had throughout the centuries. Each Zamaron queen was granted the Star Sapphire jewel, giving her tremendous powers. Women who wore this item and adopted this alter ego would plague the Earth-One Green Lantern repeatedly throughout the years. One of the former Infantas would in fact become a version of the Star Sapphire herself, battling Earth-Two's Flash repeatedly using a variation of the jewel from her universe. She was evidentally banished to another dimension by the Infantas, as she appeared around the same time period that Astra had been ruling them... prior to Astra's departure to the world of her birth a century later.

Lanterns Love Ladies! Part 4 - Stunning Sapphires

The affairs of the heart were definitely not always easy for the Emerald Crusaders, as they often found themselves in conflict with the opposite sex who were usually drawn to their tremendous abilities and insurmountable courage.

Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris' alter egos frequently fought when the Star Sapphire controlled its owner. For Alan Scott, it seems on one occasion he encountered his own Star Sapphire although she didn't have any great affection toward her world's Lantern as had Ferris.

Still, other femme fatales including the aforementioned Thorn and Harlequin would, in their other identities, captivate then crush the heart of Alan time and again. Similarly, Hal would meet a couple more Sapphires who looked like Carol, but were their own women.

In the end, however, the true loves of Hal and Alan were Carol and Molly, the latter being the Harlequin's alter ego. These ladies' costumed identities were built more upon their becoming equals to the masked men whom they love, more than to personal power and prestige as had the other lethal ladies whom the Lantern's encountered throughout the years.

Leading Ladies of Living Legends: Girlfriends of Good Guys

1. You have your Hawkmen and Hawkgirls, Supermen and Lois Lanes, Batmen and Catwomen. Virtual mirror images of one another, marital matches of magnificent marvels. Then there are these heroes comrades of the Justice League and Society of America... how had their love life mirrors their cosmic twins a universe away?  

• Remarkably similar, actually, as both Barry "Flash" Allen and Jay "Flash" Garrick immediately found their true loves even before their superhero careers began. However, only Jay trusted his girl enough to divulge his dual identity... something Barry would hesitate doing even up to a year after they were married. 

• Then there was Ray "Atom" Palmer and his years-long fiancee Jean Loring, the two have a tumultuous relationship such as when Ray's lab assistant Enrichetta Negrini's presence instilled jealously in her heart, and when Jean becomes a supervillain gaining vast mental powers before they finally wed... though sadly they later divorce. Then there is Ray's twin Al "Atom" Pratt who parted from his childhood love Mary James for a few years, dated Marion Thayer... before eventually returning to then marrying Mary afterwards.

• Finally, there was the eternal angst between the competitive Hal "Green Lantern" Jordan and his boss Carol Ferris, similar to the professionally driven Alan "Green Lantern" Scott and his secretary Molly Mayne... keeping these two couples apart longer than necessary. Even when Carol and Molly became supervillainesses, there was still romantic tension with the objects of their desire. Sure, other women entered into the mix for the guys' affection, such as Olivia Reynolds and Irene Miller. In the end, however, both former femme fatales got their men.

• Then there were the romances that never were... on Earth-One Black Canary ended up with Green Arrow while on Earth-Two Canary’s mom settled for detective Larry Lance instead leaving that Earth’s Arrow a bachelor. Or Aquaman meeting his maiden Mera on Earth-One while on Earth-Two his doppleganger continued to swim the seven seas solo. Considering that these two lady-less legends debuted in More Fun Comics, one wonders was it more fun for them as single guys?

Fawcett's Finest: Power Princesses

Powerful princesses resided on the various Earths of the multiverse, sometimes friends... other times foes... always interesting in their displays of temperment, tenacity, and talents. Among these were Princess Diana of Themyscira and Princess Taia of Thebes, women who fought for the cause of truth and justice since the early years of World War II on parallel planes of existence known as Earth-Two and Earth-S. While Diana as Wonder Woman had a superhuman physique and glorious gadgets, Taia as Ibis the Invincible's true love shared possession of his Ibistick.

Thus, Taia was at times able to implement its awesome abilities in a variety of cases in the 1940's,  as had Linda "Supergirl" Danvers of Earth-One when she grabbed it from Black Adam visiting from Earth-S, and Lois Lane on Earth-Two when she had been recruited along with her husband Clark "Superman" Kent to aid Johnny Thunder and his Thunderbolt... who had given that world's Ibistick to her... in defeating a power-mad priest.

At the same time as had Diana who herself was inspired by a true love in Colonel Steve Trevor. In modern times, Taia would be revived alongside Ibis from another decades long sleep induced by Captain Marvel's arch-foe, Doctor Sivana, who had subjected all of the golden age eras superheroes to a Suspendium-based comatose state. Thus, she was preserved young as was Diana, who had been granted a lengthier lifespan thanks to her Amazonian heritage. Now living in a modern era, both Taia and Ibis remain in retirement from crime fighting, only reappearing once during a Crisis on three Earths instigated by King Kull of Earth-S, which led to the reformation of the Squadron of Justice. However, on this adventure Taia remained behind and thus did not have an opportunity to meet her counterpart Diana of Earth-Two, who with the Justice Society allied with the Squadron of Justice and Earth-One's Justice League.

Another pair of regal royalty were Carol Ferris of Earth-One and Andrea Thomas of Earth-S, selected to be the latest in the line of princesses known as Star Sapphire and Isis, respectively. Each possessed tiara's that while worn provided them tremendous abilities, Sapphire for evil and Isis for good. While their careers were shorter than those of Diana and Taia, they were nonetheless notable for the stir they caused towards those whom they met in battle. At about the same time that Carol Ferris had lost her sapphire to an alien woman who assumed her alter ego, Andrea had acquired her own abilities from that of a previous Isis living centuries ago. Both women retreated to private life after their brief forays into costumed crusading, though their legends lasted longer.

Female Facsimile Fest: Ladies of the Lightning

Doralla Kon, a scientist originating from another dimensional plane of existence, arrived on Earth-One from her native Alkomar with the power of superspeed. She quickly meets the Flash whom she befriends. However, they determined that her presence on Earth caused matter to explode, so she returned home. Some months later, Doralla returned to Earth-One to track down a criminal from her world named Korakar, who sought to impersonate the Flash in a bid to conquer his homeworld by stealing his fellow residents' speed. In order to control this speed force, he then intended to absorb the Flash's speed as well in order to control his extra powers. Doralla and the Flash defeated Korakar and his gang, and she returned with him to Alkomar following this tale.

Doctor Maria Flura was a resident of Earth-Two who made the acquaintance of fellow scientist Jay Garrick, when both were recruited to ascertain the whereabouts of a missing reporter. When they located him in a Secret City, secluded from civilization with duplication technology to protect themselves from the outer world, Maria and Garrick came in conflict with the city's leader. When Jay as the Flash defeated him, this nevertheless spurred on a desire for Maria and a Professor Lexon to recreate their technology. Prior to this, however, Maria as well as the Flash were thought to be threats of the golden age Star Sapphire, who shunted them both into her 7th dimensional world, although the pair found their way back to Earth-Two and defeated Sapphire. Later, Maria discovered that Professor Lexon had used their replication device for his own selfish means, and aided the Flash in defeating him and his virtual henchmen.

While Maria did not possess the superspeed abilities of Doralla, her image replication technology produced much the same effect, and apparently Maria's scientific knowledge was significant to draw the attention of the alien Star Sapphire of the 7th dimension.

Dangerous Dominatrix Damsels: The Star Sapphires

We've already considered the first and second incarnations of Star Sapphire, the Green Lantern Hal Jordan's true love Carol Ferris transformed into an alien queen thanks to the machinations of an alien race of Zamorans to be their mortal queen. Turns out there was a long list of such queens, and these included another pair... one residing on Earth-Two and the latter one on Earth-One. And each resembled the other and the long line of Zamorans queens that preceeded them! Evidently there was an alien in Earth-Two's universe in order to recruit a queen as this race was later verified as the source for the golden age version's powers and identity.

On Earth-Two, an unnamed alien woman first plagued that world's Flash on two occasions, in 1947 and 1948, when she removed the speedster and his friend Doctor Maria Flura from their dimension exiled into her own 7th dimenstion. During her second foray to Earth, she attempted to banish all males whom she feared from that world in order to rule the females remaining. This femme fatale wore a star sapphire and had various undefined powers such as creating purple stairways to allow her to defy gravity and manipulating the environment. After two decisive defeats she apparently retreated without the motivation and/or courage for another bout with her mortal foe.

Decades later in 1976 on Earth-One, an alien woman named Remoni-Notra from the planet Pandina was sent to gather four remaining sapphires besides the one she was given in order to earn her the right to be the next Zamoran queen. Allying herself with the Secret Society of Super-Villains and assuming the civilian identity of stewardess Deborah Camille Darnell, she soon earned the emnity of both the criminal Wizard and the hero Captain Comet (the latter she attempted to strike up a romance with which didn't progress as she would've liked). After journeying with the Society to Earths Three and Two before a pit stop in dimensional limbo, she returned to Earth and soon retired as a super-felon.

Green Lantern Week: Friendly Femme Fatales

Both Hal Jordan and Alan Scott, otherwise known as Green Lantern in their unique universes, dealt with a plethora of profiteering plunders. A pair provided our protagonists with perplexing problems. The gals names are Carol Ferris of Earth-One and Princess Ramia of planet Myrg. Each were roytal women from alien worlds seeking a mater.  And the warrior races of two star spanning civilizations affected the romantic prospects of the Green Lanterns of Earths One and Two.

The Zamarons, the female portion of the Maltus race from which the Guardians sprang from, realized that as immortal beings it would be folly to have one among their number rule them. And so, they focused on a physical and psychological "type" that would serve as their queen throughout her adult mortal life. 

At the point of death, the title of Star Sapphire was passed from the late Zamaron queen to a woman with a near identical appearance. The lady selected was Carol Ferris, the interim president of Ferris Aircraft. Her new subjects coerced Carol's new royal persona to defeat the object of her affection, Hal "Green Lantern" Jordan with the goal of earning her right to lead them. When she failed to accomplish this, her consciousness reverted to Carol once more, although the Star Sapphire personality would reassert itself each time she made physical contact with the gem granting her power.

On Earth-Two, Princess Ramia attempted to find a suitor to wed and return with her to her homeworld. When she met Doiby Dickles, the cab driver instantly thought she would be perfectly suited for his best friend Alan "Green Lantern" Scott. However, when Prince Peril pursued Ramia from her planet to win her hand, battles ensured on two parallel planets whereby Alan and his counterpart, Hal Jordan, each as the Green Lantern battled this bad boy, and were vanquished. When Ramia and Doiby were brought back to Myrg for the Princess to wed Peril, the Lanterns returned in force to defeat the wayward Prince and his forces. Meanwhile, it was Dickles' heroism that inspired loved within Ramia, and she and Doiby wed.

Two more Star Sapphires would enter Hal Jordan's life later on, the first being Dela Pharon who also fell in love with him (her doppelgänger was Claire Morton aka Gem Girl). When she likewise proved unworthy, the Zamoran's selected a third famale, Remoni-Notra. When she appeared on Earth-One years later, she was inducted as a member of the Secret Society of Super-Villains. She, like her counterpart Star Sapphire who invaded Earth-Two on at least two occasions only to be repelled by that world's Flash, was a Zamoran exile retaining her own sapphire.

Frightful Four Face Justice Judiciously

How Chu, Money Master, Gem Girl and Smashing Sportsman. On Earth-Two, this fantastic and frightful foursome made a short but memorable impact in the annals of costumed crooks on their parallel planets. And just as this quartet on Earth-Two obtained their powers from Black Spheres originating from another universe, so to do another foursome on Earth-One. But who were they?

This has as yet not been revealed. However. around this period of time, there were similar colorful crusaders on Earth-One such as the mysterious Dexter "Doctor Light" Myles, Dela "Star Sapphire" Pharon, Attucka and Karl "Annihilator" Keller who had separate encounters with the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and Superman. Perhaps concurrent to these events, the Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow (substituting for Aquaman, as they've done before when swapping foes), and Superman encountered these four who had their brief costumed careers revitalized through encounters with four of the black spheres.

The radiations of the dormant Black Sphere life forms had twisted the morality of each of its intended recipients towards criminal ends. These were entities from another universe that traveled to the parallel Earths intent on preserving their race which was near extinction. In order to accomplish this, they had to merge their minds with those of sentient humans. 

At a certain point, they would be irrevocably bonded to the men and women who had absorbed their energies. Both the Justice Society and Justice League battled these two sets of energy-maddened humans, and after assisting the Society in defeating their four foes on Earth-Two, the League returned to their own world to do the same to the Earth-One quartet they had first faced. This "Black Sphere Gang" consisted of:

• Business magnate Horace Rowland who transformed by the Black Sphere into currency-controlling Money Master, whose thefts drew the attention of Earth-Two's Hawkman and Mister Terrific.

• Claire Morton became an evil Gem Girl when infected by the Black Sphere, which led to thefts of jewelry and a pitched battle with the Wonder Woman of Earth-Two. 

• Chinese warlord How Chu, whose execution was stayed when his body absorbed a Black Sphere, which imbued him with superhuman powers and energies which he could unleash through his spear. This led him into conflict with Hourman.

• The Smashing Sportsman was Martin Baxter, a former major league baseball player vindictive towards sports, as he no longer measured up to his peers, that brought him into conflict with Earth-Two's Robin. While Mantle was dying, Baxter's arthritis finished his career, the Black Sphere radiation gave him renewed might and use this to seek revenge against all professional sports, drawing Robin and Wildcat's attention.
