Terrific Trios: Flying Furies & Mighty Mites
Within both the Justice League and Justice Society were informal sub-groups, where likeminded members formed close bonds with one another. Examples of these included Green Lantern and the Flash, and the World’s Finest Team of Superman and Batman. Then was also a terrific trio, the flying furies Hawkman and Hawkgirl, and their pal the Atom.
On Earth-Two in 1940, Al “Atom” Pratt and Carter “Hawkman” Hall were founding members of the Justice Society of America. Decades later on Earth-One, Ray “Atom” Palmer and Katar “Hawkman” Hol were the second and third members inducted to the Justice League of America following its founding. Early adventures of these dual duos later included Shiera Hall and Shayera Hol aka Hawkgirl and Hawkwoman, respectively.

Another triumphant triad on Earth-Four were the first to call themselves the Sentinels of Justice. These included the gliding guy Helio, mind-over-matter maiden Mentalia, and powerful paragon Brute. Originally a musical group, these lads and lass were given devises allowing them to either defy gravity or gain superhuman strength. After a series of adventures, they apparently retired, and later the Sentinels of Justice consisted of Captain Atom, Blue Beetle, Nightshade and Question.
On Earth-S, the dynamic duo of Bulletman and Bulletgirl… their world’s Hawks… never had occasion to meet their planet’s version of the Atoms, Captain Kid/Courage. Instead, another trio in the Lieutenants Marvel filled that role as predecessors of the later incarnation of their world’s premier team, the Squadron of Justice.

Sinister Shadow Squads Fight Feathered Furies
When Banks was offered an early release from prison if he accepted being a test subject on a government sponsored space flight, he was recruited orbiting above Earth-One to join the Thanagarian Queen Hyathis' , where Carl would mass produce his Dimensiometer. Elite Thanagarian used these gadgets as the Shadow Squad, Hyathis' collective army launched an attack on the neighboring planet of Rann-One, then ruled by the Justice League's old foe and Hyathis' adversary Kanjar Ro. With Adam Strange of Rann, Hawkman and Hawkgirl aka Katar and Shayera Hol helped end the war of those worlds, ending with their banishment from Thanagar.
Karkull discovered the ancient advancements of the Saharan city of Ragnor, which including the ability to transform oneself into a shadow. It was later revealed that a ship from Thanagar-Two crashlanded on Earth-Two during the time of the Pharoahs, with the Thanagarians anti-gravitational nth metal being adopted by the Egyptian Prince Khufu. The Thanagarian Birdmen then living in Ragnor once battled Khufu's descendant Brian "Silent Knight" Kent, and centuries later another in the line of Khufu named Carter Hall utilized this Nth metal as the Hawkman.
Confronting Doctor Fate, who intercepted his henchmen in shadow form, Karkull himself used the device to become a shadow which the Doctor then trapped him in for eternity. Once he gained the ability to control his shadow-nature, he plucked various individuals from the future of Earth-Two in their own shadow-forms, through which he could see the present-day world through their eyes. Collecting them together to gain greater power, Ian recruited a variety of supervillians to assassinate the current and future presidents of the United States. Members of the Justice Society successfully thwarted the villains' schemes, culminating in their attacking Karkull, causing him to fracture into several shadows.
Regrettably, just as the former Wingmen of Thanagar-One “lost their wings” and their way when the Shadow Squad took its place when Hyathis’ defeat motivates them to attack Earth-One, so too had the ancient Wingmen of Thanagar-Two who settled Ragnor on Earth-Two had long since faded away. A new group of Thanagarians led by Vulture King tried to invade Earth-Two in the 1940s, this time quashed by Wonder Woman. In the end, their legacy was carried out by the Hawkmen and their wife’s the Hawkgirls/Hawkwomen.
* This dark radiation also influenced the genetics of Alan “Green Lantern” Scott’s son Todd Rice, who could transform his body into a shadow form like Karkull’s.

Leaping Lemurian Linking Legendary Ladies

On Earth-One, Ray "Atom" Palmer's fiancée Jean Loring had experience repeated psychosis from extra-terrestrial experiences, the latest occurring after she was kidnapped by the villain T.O. Morrow which brought her to his alien world. Tapping into mental abilities, Jean teleported to various points across the universe, with the Atom in pursuit, until she finally arrived at Lemuria. There the leading blue-skinned scientists from that city were able to stabilize her condition, and eventually Jean regained her sanity.
On Earth-Two, Carter "Hawkman" Hall's wife Shiera "Hawkgirl" Hall was kidnapped by the recently revived Lemurian known as Zanadu. This power-mad being claimed to have wiped out Lemuria, and sought to tap into his mental bond with Shiera to allow him to conquer the world. The Justice Society intervened, saving Sheira and ensnaring Zanadu in amber from whence he had been imprisoned for centuries.
While Zanadu claimed to have extinguished Lemuria, yellow-skinned warriors appearing similar to him were led by the King of the Caverns when he enconuntered Red Torpedo and the Mermazons in 1941! The arch-enemies of these Lemurians were the Mermazons, a warrior race of women like the Amazons of Paradise Island. Led by Queen Klitra, these Femazons allied with Red Torpedo in capturing the Cavern King and his human ally Black Shark.
Back on Earth-One, the Amazons of the Amazon River were a tribe of Amazonians who broke off from Queen Hippolyta centuries ago, forging their own life in South America half a world away. Led by Queen Atalanta, these Brazilian Amazons initially were adversarial towards Wonder Woman but soon forged an alliance with her. There is no record of these Amazons encountering their world's Lemurians, as had their Earth-Two Mermazon counterparts and their Lemurians, although given their peaceful nature there would seemingly be no conflict between these two races.

Fawcett Fridays:Married Men and Maidens in Mid-Air
The romance of Superman and Lois Lane is, indeed, an epic one. As is the tragic attraction that draws Batman and Catwoman towards the other. And even when their girlfriend knows from the beginning is real identity, as happened with Jay "Flash" Garrick with his lady Joan and Ralph "Elongated Man" Dibny with his lass Sue, there is an even more appealing coupling. That would be the crimefighting dating duo. And we have three prime examples today.
Carter and his fiancee Shiera Saunders repeatedly found themselves in adventures that called for his alter ego of Hawkman, and eventually temptation caused Hall to create another pair of wings and nth metal belt for his future bride. And thus, Hawkwoman was born, although she soon reverted to the identity of Hawkgirl. Although she never joined his team, the Justice Society of America, which she occasionally expressed interest in... she became an integral part of Earth-Two's All-Star Squadron. Together, these two Hawks also operated through the 1940's side-by-side on several cases. Eventually, she retired and never donned her costume again, and she took on a new role as mother to their son Hector.Tuesday, November 19, 2013
Wonder Women: The Worlds' Greatest (more or less) Heroines

guardians during their encounters with evil over the years.
The New Teen Titans would typify a balanced approach where both genders were concerned, as over time their membership would have notable females in the midst proving invaluable to their masculine comrades. So too would the Legion of Super-Heroes in Earth-One's future and the All-Star Squadron of Earth-Two's past, although the aforementioned Justice League and Justice Society sadly only had a handful of heroines throughout their history, although each would recruit non-member heroines from time to time to aid them in their efforts throughout the years.

Titans' Tenures on Terrific Teams: High-Flying Hawks
Although the Hawkmen were fixtures of their world's foremost fighters of felons, their histoies with these teams were different indeed. On Earth-One, Hawkman was the third member to be voted to the Justice League, after which he aided them until he and his wife left for their homeworld Thangar during a crisis there, though they returned shortly thereafter. After years of aiding the League on a few cases, Hawkgirl was finally elected as a member... of which her actual adventure were eratic at best. And on Earth-Two, its Hawkman was an actual founding member of the Justice Society of America, and soon thereafter became its third and then permanent chairman. His wife Hawkgirl aided the Society from time-to-time, although she was never considered for membership despite her occasional protests to her husband. When that team was revived years later, she at that point retired to raise their son Hector, although her husband continued to be the leader from then on.Sunday, August 21, 2011
Fawcett's Finest: Flying Females
Typically, when a hero has found the template for success, others will be created to follow his winning ways. Among the first to replicate a mighty male are fearless females. Leading the charge in this category are Shiera Hall and Susan Barr, who would be better known as Hawkgirl and Bulletgirl. Although they began as the love interests of Carter Hall and Jim Barr while these gents were already clad in their crusading costumes as Hawkman and Bulletman.
There were two Shiera Halls, on Earth-Two she was born Sheira Sanders and on Earth-One she was originally Shayera Thal, before marrying Carter and Katar respectively. While Sanders was a millionare dubutante turned adventuress, Thal was a policewoman right from the start. As for Susan, she was the daughter of a policeman, hence her acquaintence with police scientist Barr. Early in their future husbands' careers, these gals adopted aliases reflecting their male partners' identities, and earned their own reputations as top flight heroines. Eventually, they were also accepted into their world's premier superhero teams (well, Shayera and Susan, anyway) and met as members of the Justice League and Squadron of Justice to combat King Kull's attack on Earth-S.Sunday, March 20, 2011

Hawkman's Hatchery of Hate: Cloaks and Fadeway Men
When Anton Lamont first appeared in Detective Comics back in 1979, perhaps readers had assumed this was the first appearance of the cloak of Cagliostro. In fact, it was not for in Flash Comics #82 in 1982, an Earth-Two twin of that same cloak first appeared. In that instance, it was Jabez Malone who succumbed to the power exuding from it. Allowing its wearer to disappear, with the Earth-One version providing an additional attribute of dimensional travel, both Jabez and Anton faced their world's Hawkmen. After one such clash, Jabez retired while archeologist turned criminal Anton returned to plague the winged warrior and his pal Batman. Not a good idea.
