Indiana Jones meet Montana Mason

Montana Mason. Indiana Jones. Ace archaeologist achieving amazing acts of archaeology. These counterparts were legends on their respective Earths, albeit legends spoken in hushed tones and later mutated when other larger-than-life legends overtook them. Nevertheless, Montana and Indiana set the tone for noble discovery that later generations would imitate when uncovering astounding artifacts of the past.

On Earth-One, Montana trained his young son Rex to follow in his footsteps, although over time the father and his child deviated in their methods and goals. While the elder Mason sought to share his forgotten finds with the world, his son Rex had a far less benevolent nature, as the lad found opportunity to cash in on his prized treasures to increase his own personal fortunes.

On Earth-Two, Indiana was trained by his father, Henry Jones Senior who like him had similar noble intents in their archaeological work. However, whereas the father was more scholarly and reserved, his son was far more daring and adventurous. At times, the young Indiana became overzealous at protecting his fabled finds from those who wished to expose them.

Rex Mason eventually entered into the employee of wealthy Simon Stagg, and quickly fell in love with his daughter Sapphire. This embittered Stagg to Mason, motivating Simon to trick Rex into entering an ancient Egyptian tomb where he was irradiated by the meteorite stored with the Orb of Ra scepter. This transformed Rex into the elemental man known as Metamorpho, leading to his permanent severance from his own humanity and from any further relationship with his father. Rex never had further interactions with Montana, as the two Masons parted their separate ways.

Back over on Earth-Two, Indiana Jones had a professional rivalry with his fellow archaeologists Carter “Hawkman” Hall and his wife Sheira “Hawkgirl” Hall, while apparently knowing the Winged Warrior’s double identity. Whether he knew of Hall’s ancient ancestry as a 20th century descendant of Egyptian Prince Khufu is unknown, nor if he was aware of Khufu’s memories asserting themselves within Carter on occasion. This Khufu and his wife Princess Shiera were the counterparts of Rex Mason and Sapphire Stagg, the son and daughter-in-law of his doppelgänger Montana Mason. However, Indy was known to have explored the various pyramids and tombs in Egypt’s Valley of Kings, and very well may have been present when fellow archaeological Jim Rock uncovered Khufu’s crystal dagger which first revealed Carter’s connection to the ancient Prince. Although his prime focus was on the pyramids in Mexico rather than Egypt.

Montana's son Rex as Metamorpho was a teammate of archaeologist Carter "Hawkman" Hall, as both were members of the Justice League of America. Prior to arriving on Earth-One, Hall originated on the planet Thanagar-One where as Katar Hol he was his world's premier policeman, sent to observe how humanity protected its citizens. Rex Mason lived the life on his world that Carter/Khufu Hall live on his own parallel planet, up until the time that Rex became Metamorpho and Hall became Hawkman. At that point, a new entity appeared with Rex's memories in Metamorpho, who's doppelgänger was a mutated Sandy Hawkins.

Indiana's contemporaries Hawkman and Hawkgirl were teammates of Sandy Hawkins, the lad who one day became his world's version of the elemental man, when he transformed into the Silicoid Creature. These three were members of the All-Star Squadron, while also working on cases involving the Justice Society of America of Earth-Two. In an alternate future timeline, Sandy was connected to the Halls when he formed a bond with Shiera, first seen decades earlier when he and Hawkgirl teamed up to save Sandman and Hawkman in early 1942.

The parentage of Sandy Hawkins has never been revealed, as he was an orphan before Wesley "Sandman" Dodds accepted him as his ward following the death of Sandy's aunt... and Wesley's girlfriend... Dian Belmont. It is possible that Sandy's father was Henry "Indiana" Jones Junior himself!

Feathered Furies’ Fabulous Food

The Hawkmen, Katar Hol of Earth-One and Carter Hall of Earth-Two, were similar in several ways. Both were winged warriors, courageous crimefighters, and heroic husbands to the Hawkwomen. And yet, there were stark differences, such as Katar being a brunette and officer while Carter being a blonde and a leader. One other variation between the two men… Katar could modify technology while Carter could invent technology.

One example of this is Nth metal, which Carter discovered and incorporated into a flight belt, with a winged harness allowing him to fly. Katar inherited his anti-gravity belt and harness which had been constructed by his father, Paran Hol of the planet Thanagar-One.

Another creation of Carter Hall was specialized food capsules, which when mixed with a secret solution process turkey dinners. With this invention, Hall charged his colleagues in the Justice Society of America with the task of distributing these capsules to starving citizen of European counties then occupied by Nazi Germany during the early days of World War II. Carter as Hawkman assigned himself the mission of distributing these capsules in France, where he met a blonde woman who was part of the French resistance forces.

As for Katar Hol, while he was able to modify a wide array of Thanagaian and Earth technology during his costumed career, during his many missions throughout the years. However, when facing the brunette villainess known as the Golden Raven, he resorted to using Hostess Fruit Pies on her! Fruit pies!!! Although Justice Society Hawkman used some unknown ingredients in his capsule and solution, it still produced a nutritious turkey dinner. Meanwhile, Justice League Hawkman relied on a chemical concoction of a sweet treat with no nutritional value.

Twice-Told Tale: Mental Marauders & Menacing Man-Hawks

Among the greatest inventions of planet Thanagar, besides the discovery of anti-gravitational metal, are devices known as the Absorbacron and the Electromizer. These invasive mechanisms could mentally augment those connected to them, mentally implanting potentiallyl so vast quantities of information into an individual's brain. This allowed an individual to rapidly assimilate entire languages as well as culture information, which Thanagarians could use to integrate into societies alien to their own.

The Absorbacron was originally developed on Thanagar-One by the initially benevolent inhabitants of that world. When the malicous Man-Hawks invaded and pillaged their planet, a select number of Thanagarians were tasked and trained to become the Wingmen, a global police force employing the anti-gravity belts and winged harnesses developed by Paran Hol and used by his son Katar. Eventually, Katar and his wife Shayera were commissioned to travel to Earth-One, where they would learn the policing procedures of humanity as Hawkman and Hawkwoman, a concept foreign to those of Thanagar who had previously never experienced crime on their world.

The Electromizer was originally developed on Thanagar-Two by the thoroughly malevolent Vulture King and his fellow Vultures, who sought to reclaim their people’s former glory as they ventured to Earth-Two in an attempt to conquer this world. Their avian ancestors failed to conquer humanity during the ages of Egyptian Prince Khufu and English protector the Silent Knight. Now equipped with winged harnesses enhancing their speed and maneuverability, Vulture King's minions sought to enslave human-kind into their forces.

When Thanagar-One experienced a devastating global Equalizing Plague which crippled their citizenry, followed by a conquest of the alien dictator Hyathis, the Thanagarians abandoned their Wingmen aliases and began a Shadow War on Earth-One. This led to repeated conflicts with Hawkman and Hawkwoman.

Earth-Two experienced an invasion of Vulture King and his minions, following their fellow advanced Vulture scout Aiymer’s arrival, who had clashed with Doll Man years earlier. Although initially successful in forcibly recruiting residents of Earth into their winged forces, the Vultures were eventually defeated by Wonder Woman, the Justice Society teammate of Hawkman and longterm friend of his wife Hawkgirl.

Just as Thanagarian Vultures used the Electromizer to mentally manipulate humans, who wore enlarged bird-like winged suits, Thanagarian Shadow Warriors used the Absorbacron to mentally manipulate their former flying foes, the Man-Hawks, in an attempt to control Gotham City during the period of the Convengence (when that city and others of various universes was placed on an alien world for a year). Katar and Shayera defeated both Man-Hawks and Shadow Warriors.

Evil Enigmas Engineer Elemental Endgames

Each universe within the Multiverse have common aspects, as well as divergent exceptions. Among these are unique elements to each reality. One such example was the mystery element known as Dexium, first discovered in the late 1940s on Earth-Two.

Research scientist and amateur archaeologist Carter Hall was tasked with discovering hidden aspects of this recently discovered element. Undoubtedly, he would have recruited his Justice Society teammate Jay "Flash" Garrick, who himself was a leading chemist, to assist him in dissecting this curious anomaly. However, before he could, the Dexium was stolen!

In fact, it was the criminal "Bulk" Mane who had sent his henchman to abscond with this revolutionary chemical concoction. which seemingly caused an ancient mace to move by itself through the air.  In fact, that mace was being held by Hall's fiancee Shiera Sanders in her Hawkgirl identity, as she attempted to prevent the theft while making herself invisible. The catalytic element causing this invisibility was the Dexium! Carter in his Hawkman alter ego tracked down both Hawkgirl and her captors, bringing Bane and his minions to justice.

A similarly menacing man-mountain named Java was given an ancient instrument known as the Orb of Ra, which contained a meteorite fragment which could unleash elemental transformations. This occurred when his employer Simon Stagg tasked Java with sealing his contracted employee Rex Mason within an Egyptian tomb. The meteor's radiation transformed Mason into Metamopho, the Element Man. On later occasions, Java would use manufactured duplicates of the Orb of Ra to attempt to vanquish Rex, whom he saw a rival to the affections of Stagg's daughter Sapphire.

Interestingly, Carter was a distant descendant of Prince Khufu, who was the counterpart of Rex Mason! While Mason... who had been transported to the same ancient Egyptian era that Khufu resided in... later found his humanity stripped away with his mind now within the Metamorpho body in the 20th century... Khufu's mind would merged with Hall in the modern day. It would be a colleague of Hawkman, Sandy Hawkins, who would transform into his own Metamorpho-style Silicon body. Meanwhile, Carter's Earth-One counterpart Katar "Hawkman" Hol was a teammate of fellow Justice League alum Metamorpho.

Terrific Trios: Flying Furies & Mighty Mites

Within both the Justice League and Justice Society were informal sub-groups, where likeminded members formed close bonds with one another. Examples of these included Green Lantern and the Flash, and the World’s Finest Team of Superman and Batman. Then was also a terrific trio, the flying furies Hawkman and Hawkgirl, and their pal the Atom.

On Earth-Two in 1940, Al “Atom” Pratt and Carter “Hawkman” Hall were founding members of the Justice Society of America. Decades later on Earth-One, Ray “Atom” Palmer and Katar “Hawkman” Hol were the second and third members inducted to the Justice League of America following its founding. Early adventures of these dual duos later included Shiera Hall and Shayera Hol aka  Hawkgirl and Hawkwoman, respectively.

Another triumphant triad on Earth-Four were the first to call themselves the Sentinels of Justice. These  included the gliding guy Helio, mind-over-matter maiden Mentalia, and powerful paragon Brute. Originally a musical group, these lads and lass were given devises allowing them to either defy gravity or gain superhuman strength. After a series of adventures, they apparently retired, and later the Sentinels of Justice consisted of Captain Atom, Blue Beetle, Nightshade and Question.

On Earth-S, the dynamic duo of Bulletman and Bulletgirl… their world’s Hawks… never had occasion to meet their planet’s version of the Atoms, Captain Kid/Courage. Instead, another trio in the Lieutenants Marvel filled that role as predecessors of the later incarnation of their world’s premier team, the Squadron of Justice.

Sinister Shadow Squads Fight Feathered Furies

Carl Banks and Ian Karkull both used technology developed by others to become a pair of problematic Shadow-Thieves who plagued not only their arch-foes, Hawkman and Doctor Fate, but their enemies' teammates in the Justice League and Justice Society.

When Banks was offered an early release from prison if he accepted being a test subject on a government sponsored space flight, he was recruited orbiting above Earth-One to join the Thanagarian Queen Hyathis' , where Carl would mass produce his Dimensiometer. Elite Thanagarian used these gadgets as the Shadow Squad, Hyathis' collective army launched an attack on the neighboring planet of Rann-One, then ruled by the Justice League's old foe and Hyathis' adversary Kanjar Ro. With Adam Strange of Rann,  Hawkman and Hawkgirl aka Katar and Shayera Hol helped end the war of those worlds, ending with their banishment from Thanagar.

Karkull discovered the ancient advancements of the Saharan city of Ragnor, which including the ability to transform oneself into a shadow. It was later revealed that a ship from Thanagar-Two crashlanded on Earth-Two during the time of the Pharoahs, with the Thanagarians anti-gravitational nth metal being adopted by the Egyptian Prince Khufu. The Thanagarian Birdmen then living in Ragnor once battled Khufu's descendant Brian "Silent Knight" Kent, and centuries later another in the line of Khufu named Carter Hall utilized this Nth metal as the Hawkman.

Confronting Doctor Fate, who intercepted an's henchmen in shadow form, Karkull himself used the device to become a shadow which the Doctor then trapped him in for eternity. Once he gained the ability to control his shadow-nature, he plucked various individuals from the future of Earth-Two in their own shadow-forms, through which he could see the present-day world through their eyes. Collecting them together to gain greater power, Ian recruited a variety of supervillians to assassinate the current and future presidents of the United States. Members of the Justice Society successfully thwarted the villains' schemes, culminating in their attacking Karkull, causing him to fracture into several shadows.

Years after the Rann-Thanagar War, the Thanagarian Shadow-Squad now sought both revenge against Katar and Shayera, as well as to steal their anti-gravitational devices. It seems that once Hyathis departed their planet after she was deposed as its ruler, the people of that world succumbed to the effects of the Equalizing Plague which she had cured them of earlier. This plague caused all Thanagarians residing on that world to be mediocre, without exceptional physical nor mental attributes that had elevated their civilization. The Shadow War they initiated, using the Absorbascon to tap into the minds of humanity, caused Hawkman and Hawkgirl to pull away from their fellow Leaguers who were susceptible to its effects. The Hols eventually triumphed over the Shadow-Squad.

Decades earlier, the after-effects of Karkull's body exploding, releasing his shadow-force captives, caused the Justice Society and its close friends present to gain added life. This gave Hawkman, Hawkgirl and their allies added youth and vitality for decades. The future humans who’s shadows were stolen probably included Andre Voisin, Olive Morell, a Mongolian bandit, a window washer and other individuals in early 1966 by the evil ruler of the psycho-matter universe of Dis (in Showcase #61). These became their world’s unwitting version of the Shadow-Squad, although their sacrifice in decreased lifespan inadvertently helped their world by giving its protectors in the Justice Society the strength to protect Earth-Two from a variety of threats from space in the years to come*.

Regrettably, just as the former Wingmen of Thanagar-One “lost their wings” and their way when the Shadow Squad took its place when Hyathis’ defeat motivates them to attack Earth-One, so too had the ancient Wingmen of Thanagar-Two who settled Ragnor on Earth-Two had long since faded away. A new group of Thanagarians led by Vulture King tried to invade Earth-Two in the 1940s, this time quashed by Wonder Woman. In the end, their legacy was carried out by the Hawkmen and their wife’s the Hawkgirls/Hawkwomen.

* This dark radiation also influenced the genetics of Alan “Green Lantern” Scott’s son Todd Rice, who could transform his body into a shadow form like Karkull’s.

Strange Stories of the Swamp: Hawkmen vs Marshland Monsters

In 1947 on Earth-Two and 1976 on Earth-One, the Hawkmen of each world faced Marshland Monsters who had traveled across country. The 1947 malevolent menace was Solomon Grundy, recently brought back to his pseudo-life by a bolt of lighting from his formerly petrified state. The 1976 misunderstood mutant was Swamp Thing, recently restored to a human state yet once more reverting to his vegetative physical form.

As to how Katar Hol had first been informed of the Swamp Thing's presence in Portland, Oregon, regardless he felt the need to travel there from his Thanagarian spacecraft to engage with and apprehend the bog being. During the course of this tale, Katar as Hawkman was introduced to government agent Sabre, a vengeful sword wielding assassin who had previously tried and failed to capture the creature himself.

What is known is how Carter Hall came to learn of Solomon Grundy's cross-country rampage, when he along with his Justice Society colleagues realized their fellow member Green Lantern was missing and discovered their meeting headquarters in disarray. Lantern had learned his old foe Grundy was active once more, while Solomon tracked Lantern to his last known location at the Society's HQ. Traveling to a town named Regis, Carter as Hawkman and Grundy briefly battled, with Solomon escaping to wreak havoc on other towns.

During their final confrontation, Katar-Hawkman was knocked unconscious as Swamp Thing retreated from the scene and transformed back to his pseudo-human form of scientist Alec Holland. When the Justice Society together tracked down Solomon Grundy, they overwhelmed their foe while saving Green Lantern, after which the hero exiled Grundy in an emerald globe on the moon's surface.

Twice-Told-Tales: Men of the Atom Into the Cosmos

Physicists Ray Palmer and Al Pratt were obsessed with scientific discoveries, built upon their previous exposure to life-altering technology. Ray harnessed the ability to shrink to microscopic proportions through use of a white dwarf star fragment housed within his specially designed belt and palm controls. Al harnessed superhuman strength through exposure from Tholium radiation while battling a supervillain. On these occasions, neither man was in full command of their mental and moral attributes, which made them brilliant scientists and legendary heroes.

When another physicist scientist published a paper duplicating research simultaneously discovered by Ray, which he was about to present at a scientific conference, he experienced a mental breakdown. Seeking a new scientific breakthrough, Palmer became obsessed to the point where he harnessed his shrinking technology to pierce the barrier between his own universe of Earth-One, and a mysterious subatomic Microcosmos. When his best friend Hawkman tried to stop him, Palmer attacked him. When then confronted by his Justice League allies, Ray as the Atom disappeared into this new realm, with the Leaguers following him. There, both he and his allies lost their memories aside from vague recollections. Hawkman recalled his Thanagarian origin, and yet also felt a connect to ancient Egypt when he saw some writings in the subatomic world of Goltha. Together with native inhabitants led by the Wanderer and her Siren Sisterhood, the Justice League defeat the oppressive ruler Kass-andre and her warriors, who had used the mindless gigantic Atom as a weapon to subdue the world's residents for a century in their time. The League returned to Earth-One, with Ray regaining his sanity.

When the Ultra-Humanite exposed his arch-enemy Superman to the mind-altering river Koehaha, also known as the Stream of Ruthless which removes morality from any who drown in its water, he then guided Superman into doing the same with some of his Justice Society allies. Among these were the Atom and Hawkman, as six Society members began to unleash their sinister desires upon their world of Earth-Two. Al Pratt as the Atom sought to expose himself to further Tholium radiation to increase his superhuman attibutes, although he was opposed by his step-son Albert "Nuklon" Rothstein. Hawkman likewise was obsessed with uncovering secrets of ancient Egyptian museum pieces, although he was likewise opposed by his son Hector "Silver Scarab" Hall. Eventually, the effects of the stream began to wear off, with the Justice Society returning to Koehaha to submit to is toxic influence once more. This was thwarted when their old foe Brain Wave pulled them, their children of Infinity, Inc., and Ultra-Humanite into inter-dimensional Limbo between universes. There, Ultra was finally defeated and the Society regained their sanity, allowing them to return to Earth-Two. Although the Justice Society didn't encounter sub-atomic beings during this adventure, one of those present in Wonder Woman had years earlier battled Queen Atomia and her minions on a subatomic world mirroring Goltha.

Ominous Orbs’ Outer-Space Origins

Many objects of power seemingly proliferate around and upon the Earths of the DC Multiverse. Among the oldest and most potentially powerful were the glowing globes known as the Orb of Ra and the Hammer of Thor, each tied to heroes of the 20th century.

The Orb of Ra was originally fabricated from a meteorite that crash landed in ancient Egypt on Earth-One, crafted by a Pharoah and his chief priest which could transmute elements. Left buried in a pyramid for thousands of years, it as recovered by soldier-of-fortune Rex Mason, who was exposed to its radiation when left unconscious by treacherous associate Java. Mutated into the inhuman Metamorpho, it allowed the so-called Element Man to transform his body into myriad of shapes and sizes, a reluctant but brave hero in service to the amoral businessman Simon Stagg.

At times, Stagg used the Orb to attempt to reverse Mason's physical condition. At other times, he would use the Orb to weaken Rex, when the two came into conflict. Java, jealous of Rex’s relationship to Stagg’s daughter Sapphire, once used it against Metamorpho.

Eventually, Stagg’s soldiers used a few replicas on Mason, when Rex tried to reunite with Sapphire, rendering Mason inert. His Outsiders allies traveled back to ancient Egypt to help revive Rex, and defeat the priest Akh-Ton who was behind Mason’s transformation. The original Orb was once more secured safely when Mason and Simon reconciled, with Rex marrying Sapphire.

The Hammer of Thor arrived on ancient Earth-Two, once in the possession of a space-traveling elder race who left it behind. In the mid 20th century, it would be uncovered by a Norwegian archaeologist and given to Carter Hall, the heir to an ancient Egyptian Prince tied to alien artifacts. Hall used the Hammer as a blunt-force weapon in his masked alter ego of Hawkman while battling the evil Mazda the Great. During this tale, the Winged Warrior misplaced the hammer in a volcano, which was extracted by a renowned college professor and metallurgist turned criminal mastermind Fairytales Fenton.

Fenton had previously led a gang of crooks disguised as Vikings, while he appeared as Thor of legends. Using a replica of alien alloy Hammer, Fenton battled New York City police and the city’s resident masked men Sandman and Sandy, the Golden Boy. Empowered by his hammer’s electromagnetic generating mallet, Fairytale rendered Sandy unconscious.

After his defeat at the hands of Sandman, Fenton was liberated from a lengthy prison sentence by the Ultra-Humanite, sending the malevolent metallurgist to retrieve the original Hammer***. Once in its possession, the energies emitted from it turned Fenton insane, leading him into battle with the All-Star Squadron and Tarantula… whom Fenton mistook for Sandman himself. Ultra through her agent Cyclotron recovered the Hammer, which she used once more versus the All-Stars. When Cyclotron betrayed Ultra and exploded, seemingly killing both, the Hammer seemed to vaporize. Or did it? Given its properties, this is highly unlikely.

In an alternate timeline, Prince Khufu of Earth-Two, connected to the Hammer of Thor through Hawkman, battled the Earth-One Priest Ahk-Ton in a proto-Metamorpho form using the Orb of Ra. This was shortly after Rex, Sapphire and the Outsiders journeyed to that era when Metamorpho was temporary under Ahk-Ton's control.

Metamorpho was shown to be connected to silicon-based creatures, mirroring the Silicon Creature formerly known as Sandy, and the other silicon men whom the golden age Flash faced in the present day. This became evideht when the Egyptian Elemental Ahk-Ton's new master Vandal Savage used thr Orb to create and army of literal sandmen.

***Cyclotron’s electro-generator powered by the Hammer of Thor was utilized by the Ultra-Humanite into transforming Olympic athlete Will Everett into the Amazing-Man. As a result, Everett gained the power to alter his body chemistry to mimic any substance he touched, similar to Mason’s abilities.

Since an electro-magnetic belt worn by Will’s counterpart Jefferson Pierce only gave him electricity based powers rather than those displayed by Everett, this apparent derivation in superhuman attributes must have been derived from the extra-terrestrial influence of the hammer itself. Latent similar effects were caused by Fenton’s replica hammer as energy he was imbued with an afflicted upon Sandy Hawkins transformed that lad into his matter-mutating sand based form when coupled with exposure to Wesley “Sandman” Dodds experimental silicon gun that irradiated Sandy.

Thanagar: From Planetary Protectors to Interstellar Invaders

The planet Thanagar-One orbited the star Polaris in the Alpha-Centari System, a world that reached the pinnacle of peace for over two hundred years. No longer in need of a monarch or sole-authoritarian, this world was ruled by a benevolent council, and guarded by their Wingmen. These flying foot-soldiers were tasked with dealing first with invading Man-Hawks from outer space, and later thrill thieves.

One of these, the criminal known as Byth, was followed to Earth-One by a pair of Wingmen... Katar and Shayera Hol. Assuming the masked idenities of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, aided in their winged flight by the anti-gravity metal discovered by Katar's father Paran, the pair captured the shape-shifting Byth and stayed on Earth to study its crimefighting techniques.

During their time on Earth-One, Hawkman joined the Justice League of America and the married winged warriors made friends with fellow superheroes as well as residents of Midway City, where they made a home as museum curator Carter Hall along with his assistant Shiera. Meanwhile, the political climate was gradually changing on Thanagar, due to various factors which hardened its citizens.

This began when the Thanagarian fleet and its Wingmen expanded across the galaxy and came into conflict with the Infinite Empire. This alien armada decisively defeated the Thanagarians, and false evidence indicates that Katar has betrayed his peoples’ location to the Empire. Although revealing the true betrayer and helping locate the means to neutralized the Empire, Katar and Shayera found a permanent rift between they and their fellow Wingmen. This would be exploited later when alien Empress Hyanthis cured the Thanagarians from an Equalizing Plague which crippled them, turning their planet into her dictatorship.

While the Carter Hall native to Earth-Two developed the nth metal (his universe’s version of anti-gravity metal) belt with wings based on the long abandoned Thanagarian spacecraft found in ancient Egypt, the residents of Thanagar-Two had advanced their method of winged flight in the centuries since the time of the Egyptian Pharaohs. This technology incorporated a wing harness powered by an "atom-breaking engine" to achieve both altitude and substantial speed.

These renegade minions of the Vulture King apparently originated from Thanagar-Two. Centuries earlier, an advanced armada of these Wingmen had attempted to found a colony on Earth-Two, whom the armored avenger known as Silent Knight encountered during one of his adventures. Now seeking to recruit humans into his forces, the Thanagarian Vulture King and his lieutenants used a device known as the Electromizer (their version of the more benevolent device known as the Absorbacron developed on Thanagar-One), which temporarily brainwashed the Amazing Amazon herself, Wonder Woman! Once defeated, these rogues were placed in Earth prisons.

Hidden Hemispheres of Hyperspace

Hyperspace is defined as four or more dimensions folded upon itself, creating a multi-dimensional universal plane of existence.

On one occasion, four Krptonian prisoners of the Phantom Zone discovered the means to reach a planet with unusual properties in an adjacent dimension they also labeled an "alternate universe"*. From this world, they launched deadly robotic Anachroids to wreak havok in space and time, until the Superman and Flash of Earth-One tracked them to their source and defeated these creatures and their masters. This trans-dimensional world may have been the same as Rokyn, where the Kandorians resided once Superman and Supergirl enlarged them.

This world had a counterpart in an "alternate universe"* of Earth-Two, a psuedo-Pluto which the Spectre had been exiled to, wherein the inhabitants spoke a language derived from that of the Andromedan Galaxy, the same galaxy where Krypton once resided! Could these have been long lost Kryptonian refugees? The domed city on this Pluto mirrored the once bottled city of Kandor. After quelling a civil war, Spectre later returned to this world, exiling Nazi agents there, no doubt out of revenge for their treatment of he and his Justice Society allies.

In face, six of his Justice Society colleagues had been simultaneously captured and also exiled into hyperspace via experimental rocketships by enemy Nazi agents. Hawkman was sent to a Saturn-like world named Arkania, a militant people like those of the extra-dimensional world Llorth, whom the Earth-One Hawkman once encountered. Later, the younger Hawkman traveled on twice through another dimensional warp to the world of Illoral, a mirror image of the Wingworld that Wonder Woman of the Justice Society visited more than once. Queen Desira and her daughter Princess Eve of Wingworld had counterparts in Dwyanna Ral of Llorth and Queen Maya of Floria.

The Atom of Earth-One and Doctor Mid-Nite of Earth-Two likewise visited other-dimensional worlds in Floria and Faux-Neptune (the Atom of Earth-Two visited a hyperspacial version of Mars like that of Mars II settled by the Martian Manhunter and his people in Earth-One's universe).

Fellow Justice Society members Starman and Sandman visited worlds resembling Jupiter and Uranus with strange substance sentients as had the Metal Men of Earth-One , such as the alien Robot-spider Queen and minions of Metalus 5. Jimmy Olsen of Earth-One and Johnny Thunder of Earth-Two likewise ventured to alien dimensions on the same occasions as their peers Superman and Spectre above.

* The term "alternate universe" used for worlds visited by the individual Justice Leaguers and Justice Socialites as mentioned is different from that of planets in a "parallel universe". The alternate universe simply means an adjacent dimension attached to either the Earth-One or Earth-Two universe, respectively.

Hawkman Hijacked in Hyperspace!

Katar and Carter were high-flying heroes on their respective Earths as the Hawkmen. The Earth-One Katar was native to the extra-terrestrial world known as Polaris, his counterpart Carter was native to Earth-Two. While the former traveled through space much more than had the latter, they both were adept at voyages throughout their galaxy and into other realms.

Katar and his wife Shayera possessed at Star-Cruiser, able to travel the expanse between their home and adopted worlds with relative ease. Carter had been gifted at various points in his career with space craft, first while captured and hijacked by Nazis, inexplicably sending him to space, and later when his old friend Elwood Napier gave Hawkman and his Justice Society allies a gravity-motor spaceship.

In order to travel to and fro among the stars, Katar's craft was outfitted with a drive allowing it to access hyperspace. And during Carter's first voyage throughout his solar system, his craft likewise entered hyperspace which led him to an alternate dimension version of Saturn. While it had been said that this was an "alternate universe" version of the planet, the physics of hyperspace in both Earth-One and Earth-Two's universe meant that in fact he arrived at another world within his own universe resembling Earth-Two's Saturn.

Apparently, just as the extra-dimensional planet Bgztl was in the same physical space as Earth-One and the planet Duomal is in the same physical space as Earth-Two… both worlds are in their universes’ 4th dimension. It appears the worlds the Justice Society members visited during their hyperspace adventure were the other planets in Duomal’s 4th dimension solar system.

We know these were in an adjacent dimension as Wonder Woman and the “hyperspace” Venusians led by Queen Desira frequently visited each other’s world with relative ease, while traveling between universes could only occur specific times of the year or with devices not invented until decades later.

Hawkmen & Shadow-Thieves of Thanagar and Ragnor

The existence of planet Thanagar, orbiting the star sun Polaris, was first revealed to humanity when its law enforcement officers Katar & Shayera Hol journeyed to Earth-One. Their task was to learn from the police of this third world from the sun, which would benefit their people. Adopting the aliases of Hawkman and Hawkgirl using anti-gravity metal to fly, the Hols defended Midway City and their adopted world as a crime-fighting duo, and later as members of the Justice League of America. One of their first foes was Carl Sands, a criminal inventor who became the Shadow-Thief, using his Dimensiometer to become a living shadow.

The invading alien queen Hyanthis had saved the Thanagarians from an Equalizing Plague which stymied their civilization, and demanded to be acknowledged as their sovereign. She then recruited Sands, enlisting him into creating a Shadow Squad, with devices like his own. These shadow men, along with the legion of Wingmen, subjugated this once free world under her authoritarian rule. Hyanthis was opposed by the Halls, who were then exiled from the planet of their birth until they liberated it some time after.

However, given the loss of scientific knowledge during the plague, the Wingmen were replaced by the remaining Shadow Squad, which launched a Shadow War on Earth-One. Their goal, to steal both the anti-gravity and other technology now lost to them, which Hawkman and Hawkgirl possessed.

The inhabitants of Thanagar's dimensional twin planet ventured to Earth-Two over a thousand years before this, founding a city in the Sahara Desert near Egypt named Ragnor in honor of their homeworld. These birdmen brought with them Nth metal which had anti-gravitational properties, allowing them to glide in the air. Their queen eventually tried to initially conquer England and then the world, and so challenged its hero of the time... the Silent Knight... into battle with her hawkmen. The Knight triumphed over them, and later his descendant Carter Hall rediscovered Nth Metal, first acquired by their earlier ancestor Prince Khufu of Egypt from the birdmen's Ragnor city outpost.

As Hawkman, he and his girlfriend Shiera aka Hawkgirl joined the Justice Society in battling evil scientist Ian Karkull. Karkull had developed shadow transforming technology after visiting the now-deserted Sahara city of Ragnor (where it was hinted he learned the secret to perform this fantastic feat). Transforming himself and his minions into shadows, Ian twice faced Doctor Fate, who defeated him each time. Later, Karkull attempted to plunge America into chaos, only to be stopped by the Hawks along with the remaining allies of the Justice Society of America. Karkull was seemingly destroyed, while his subservient shadow men merged with the Society members... granting them extended lives!

Intergalatic Forces of the Positive and Antimatter Universes

Two large intergalatic law enforcement organizations operated in the universe of Earth-One, with correspondening negative versions residing in the Antimatter Universe of Qward. Each would be equipped with state of the art weaponry and tactic guidance that made them forces to be reckoned with for those whom they faced in battle.

The oldest of these were the Green Lantern Corps led by the Guardians of the Universe on Earth-One, and the Thunderers... also known as Destroyers.... of Qward. In the 20th century, a secondary force was devised by the Weaponers of Qward to oppose their Guardian's troops, this force being the Anti-Green Lantern Corps. Coming equipped with a black lantern centeral power battery that functioned much as the green lantern central power battery, its users had a severe handicap in that the black energy required far more will power then the green energy, and so the Anti-Green Lanterns had shorter life spans than their positive universe twins. As such, their history was shorter lived.

The secondary alien police force was the Wingmen or Hawkmen of Thanagar-One, who mostly operated on their world although they sent two of their number, Katar and Shayera Hol, to Earth-One for a number of years. Later, while under military dictatorship, they would turn into an oppressive flying force much like the Thunderers of Qward although not as technologically advanced. They were ultimately vanquished.

Of note as well are the two agent forces, discontinued for thousands of years until the 20th century, in the form of the Guardians' Manhunter androids and the Weaponers' Shadow Demons. These would reappear in modern times due to the guidance of the Manhunter's leader and the Shadow Demons' master Anti-Monitor returning to lead them. They would prove potent, but also ultimately beatable.

Other universes such as Earth-Two didn't have such forces, although that particular world had Chang's ancient Green Dragon Tong and the bird people of Feithera, whom that world's Green Lantern and Hawkman met.

Feathered Furies Flee Friendly Fighting Forces

Katar Hol along with his wife Shayera were tasked with observing law enforcement protocols of humanity on Earth-One, and reporting back their findings to their native world Thanagar. Both were equipped with anti-gravity belts along with wings to guide their flight. For the next three years while living in Midway City, the pair adopted to aliases, their civilian identities as Carter and Shayera Hall and their costumed aliases of Hawkman and Hawkgirl. As the Halls, they operated Midway curator and co-curator of Midway City Museum, where they learned of ancient weaponry used by humans which they then used in their heroic careers on a number of adventures.

Eventually, the married couple were noticed by the Justice League of America, who initially invited just Hawkman to join their ranks. For the next few years, he would assist this team on various cases... common and cosmic... with his wife on occasion accompanying him on these. Katar became an integral part of the team over time, and later met his counterpart of Earth-Two, together battling Solomon Grundy. However, when the two Hawkmen's groups next met to tackle the Iron Hand on Carter's world, it was only Katar who was present!

Carter Hall along with his wife Shiera decided to adopt costumed aliases as Hawkman and Hawkgirl, inspired by memories of ancestors Khufu and Shiera of ancient Egypt. Both were equipped with nth metal anti-gravity belts along with wings to guide their flight. As part-time archaeologists for a New York City museum, the pair used a variety of ancient weaponry which they used in their heroic identities.

From the very beginning, the original Hawkman was a founding member of the Justice Society of America, serving as the team's third and permanent chairman. For the next few years, he would assist this team on various cases... common and cosmic... with his wife on occasion joining him. Eleven years later, things changed.

Framed for international espionage and suspected of treason while attempting to capture a mysterious benefactor of their satellite headquarters turned prison, the Justice Society led by Hawkman refused a request by a Senate joint hearing to reveal their secret identities in order to clear their names. Instead, all active members except Wonder Woman retired .

After donning his mask and wings along with teammate Atom while visiting their pal Edmund Blake, Hawkman and his fellow Justice Society members ended their decade long retirement during a battle with Vandal Savage. For the next several years until 1971, Hawkman was front and center in the team's affairs. However, in June of 1972. the Hall's young godson Norda arrived at their home, after having been injured during his trip to America. Tending to the lad and returning him to Feithera, this explains why the Society's leader wasn't present during its biggest crisis, as Earth-Two was in the nebula grip of Iron Hand.

In 1974, Katar and Shayera were called back to Thanagar to rejoin their fellow Wingmen, reporting on what they had learned. However, upon arriving on their homeworld, the Hols discovered that the planet's civilization was struck down with an "equalizing plague", causing all of them to be ordinary and average... and thus stagnant as a society. Seeking a cure for this, Katar returned to his adopted world and rejoined the Justice League to enlist their aid in defeating the alien Equilizer that had spread this plague.

Soon after, Shayera recovered from this condition as had the rest of Thanagar, thanks to a remedy provided by the alien dictator known as Hyathis. However, Hyanthis used this cure to enslave the people under her rule. An interplanetary war soon followed with she and her Thanagarians, versus their neighboring planet Rann, led by her old foe Kanjar Ro, who had recently conquered it as well.

After a brief war between the two worlds, a peaceful detente resulted thanks to the intervention of Katar, Shayera and Rann's  heroes Adam and Alanna Strange. However, as the Hols did not support Hyanthis' illegitimate rule of their homeworld, they were exiled back to Earth-One.

Still, the Justice League were there as a support them, ultimately inviting Hawkgirl to join them. She would later self-identify as Hawkwoman, showing her equal stature to that of her husband. Together they were the only husband and wife members of the League.

A few years later, Hyathis would be overthrown, although a military dictatorship followed on Thanagar due to a vacuum of leadership. Again, the Hols could not support this new facsist state of their birth world. They would later face an a Thanagarian invasion force on Earth-One, backed with technology provided by their old nemesis Shadow-Thief, which they repelled.

Carter and Shiera who found a home with fellow "birdmen" in the arctic circle's Feithera as well as within the Society. Katar and Shayera sadly found themselves alienated both from the "wingmen" of their former home, and found themselves no longer members of the League following its dissolution by its chairman Aquaman following a Martian invasion.

Still, in both cases, the Hols and Halls had one another to draw strength from one another, through both good times and bad. These twin couples became the standard for marital unity which they fellow superheroes and superheroines sought to imitate when eventually wedding their own future marriage mates.

The Hawkwomen, Their Hawkmen, and Justice Denied

While receiving top billing of the pair, the Hawkmen were only one half of the Winged Warrior duo that included the ladies in their lives, alternatively known as Hawkgirl and Hawkwoman. Even though each pair shared in scores of adventures together, when it came to the teams the Hawkmen were a part of, there wasn't room for their fairer half.

On Earth-One, this was mystifying, given the fact that Katar and Shayera Hol were sent there from their homeworld of Thanagar in order to study police techniques of that planet's humans. Indeed, both were accomplished law enforcement officers, yet when the call came for a new recruit into the Justice League, only Katar was invited to the predominant "boys club". A no duplication of powers rule was in effect, but years later disgarded after several times wherein Hawkwoman proved her value, and joined them.

On Earth-Two, Carter Hall was the established superhero, when his girlfriend Shiera Sanders asked to be trained as his assistant. So when Hawkman was recruited as a charter member of the Justice Society, perhaps he felt that Sheira wasn't qualified as yet. However, after Hawkgirl's acceptance into the All-Star Squadron as a full member, despite her petitions Hawkman did not advocate her inclusion into his main team.

From words uttered by Katar to Shayera, there was a deep bond that he refused to break for any cause or anyone, and so fought for to be added to the League. Although Carter had as great a love for Shiera, it evidently wasn't strong enough to allow her into the Society... of which he was leader! A stark contrast between the Hawkmen of two worlds!

So Silver Scarab was right and Green Arrow was wrong, Carter not Katar is the worst!

Infinity Stones of the DC Multiverse

Just as there were six stones that each had unique powers granted to their possessors on Earth-616, so to on other Earths there were versions of these same objects with different names and distinct histories. Each of these were crafted from alien meteorites, and had profound impact on both Earths One and Two.

The Guardians of the Universe concentrated emerald energy into a Central Power Battery on the planet of Oa, with portions of its energy siphoned off into thousands of miniature lanterns throughout the cosmos, used by the Green Lantern Corps in the Earth-One univese. A portion of this energy was transplanted into the Earth-Two realm which made the Starheart and the Council of Stars, protecting that universe. Hal Jordan and Alan Scott were given lanterns and their power rings.

The Star Sapphire was an object in each universe given to specific women who would become queens over alien races of immortal warrior women such as the Zamoran and Infanta. These sapphires allowed the user to traverse space and bend it to their will. Carol Ferris, Dela Pharon, Deborah Camille Darnell and an unidentified woman each used these gems.

Twin alien meteorites were formed into the Orb of Ra of Earth-One and the Hammer of Thor of Earth-Two. The Orb was capable of transmuting elements while the Hammer was able to manipulate the elements. While Metamorpho and Hawkman used these globes for good, Simon Stagg and Ultra-Humanite used them for evil.

Each Earth had their own Ruby of Life and Ring of Life, which had the ability to animate objects when worn by various men from around both Earths. The Ruby of Earth-Two was temporarily displaced by its owner Sargon from its native realm, but eventually returned from Earth-One when the effect of three such rubies corrupted him.

And then there was the distinct diverse gems known as the Black Diamond of Earth-One and the Powerstone of Earth-Two, which granted the owners such as Eclipso and Alexie Luthor to vast power of the mind. These gems brought forth evil in men like Bruce Gordon, Luthor and Ultra-Humanite.

_______________________________

Interestingly, when the Power Stone and Hammer of Thor were brought together, they increased in power. This was similar to when the rubies and rings of life were present together, especially with Green Lantern's Power Ring.

There were two other sets of powerful gems which, when combined, gave their owners' tremendous powers. Within the Earth-One universe, in the Gemworld dimension, twelve stones existed that when harnessed together into a breastplate were a source of tremendous power. These included the following gems: amethyst, aquamarine, moonstone, sapphire, turquoise, emerald, opal, garnet, diamond, ruby, sardonyx and topaz. This breastplace gave the evil Dark Opal tremendous power, which almost enabled him to defeat Princess Amethyst and her colleagues.

Within the Earth-Two universe, these same gems were found on that world, and were likewise merged in an ancient mechanism devised to forge these together. These included the following gems: diamond, yellow topaz, emerald, bluish-white diamond, and garnet.

With these stones combined, they made the Lifestone which could bring inanimate objects to life. With this. the evil Doctor Brett nearly defeated the Seven Soldiers of Victory, with the dormant statue of Atlas gaining sentience and battling the heroes. However, the Soldiers outsmarted Brett in the end.

Dark Opal had previously used his considered power to torment the citizens of the interdimensional locale known as Gemworld, opposed by Princess Amethyst. His Earth-Two counterpart Wotan had similar abilities and sought to rule all reality, although he was repeatedly opposed by his arch-enemy Doctor Fate along with Inza Cramer Nelson, girlfriend and later wife to Fate’s alter ego Kent Nelson. Unlike Opal, Wotan turned to scientific gadgetry to supplement his innate abilities. Eventually, Wotan was imprisoned in a interdimensional reality mirrored by that of Gemworld, kept immobile seemingly for all eternity!

Both Dark Opal and Doctor Brett perished following exposure to these gems. What became of their gems following the defeats of the gems’ owners is unknown, although their potential for causing havoc is highly potent should they still exist somewhere within the Multiverse.

Hawkmen and Darkness Doctors of Two Worlds

Katar and Shayera Hol were originally police officers from the planet of Thanagar, who had been tasked with journeying to Earth-One and learn the law enforcement techniques of that world. Soon after starting their dual careers as masked superheroes as well as a museum curator and his assistant, the pair as Carter and Shiera Hall established a solid reputation as the crime-fighting duo of Hawkman and Hawkgirl. This led to Katar being invited to join the Justice League of America, with his wife joining years later.

Just a few months prior to this, a renowned physicist in the field of light studies named Doctor Bruce Gordon while on the island of Diablo during a solar eclipse, encountered a local self-made "seer" named Mophir. This madman attacked Doctor Gordon, scratching him with a black diamond, before plunging off a cliff. The lasting effects of this on Bruce was an infection, caused by this alien meteorite fragment, which unleashed an evil version of himself that took control during any eclipse. As the supervillian known as Eclipso, Gordon's malevolent alter ego tried several times to unleash sinister schemes upon humanity. Yet each time, Bruce along with his girlfriend Mona and her father Professor Simon Bennett, thwarted the plans of Eclipso time and again.

After several attempts to purge himself once and for all of the corrupted version of himself, Doctor Gordon along with lab assistant John "Red Tornado" Smith, used a machine that seemingly accomplished this. In fact, it unleashed three temporary clones of Eclipso which would cause irreputable harm upon Earth-One if left unchecked. Red Tornado brought Bruce to the JLA Satellite to enlist the aid of the android's Justice League companions, including Hawkman... who himself was about to resign from the League and return with Shayera to Thanagar. On this occasion, Katar met Bruce, not knowing that this man.. designer of the Solar City... could have been his son!  Thankfully, the League destroyed this incarnation of Eclipso.

On Earth-Two, Doctor Charles McNider was both blessed and cursed by tragic circumstances into gaining the ability to see in perfect darkness while experiencing blindness in the light. Adopting the alias of Doctor Mid-Nite, McNider built a heroic costumed career for himself, both in his solo adventures as well as a member of the Justice Society of America after it was founded.

Throughout the years, Mid-Nite built a friendship with the Society's chairman Carter "Hawkman" Hall, as they two served for decades together on this team. Even when the team disbanded in 1951 due to government pressure, the pair supported one another as collegial colleagues through good times and bad.

However, when Green Lantern along with the Flash were mentally manipulated by the Psycho-Pirate, with the former causing destruction both at GBC-TV studios as well as Gotham City Airport, a fracture developed between the two men. Motivated by Police Commissioner Bruce Wayne, who as Batman was a fellow member of the team before his retirement, Doctor Mid-Nite and other inactive members attacked the active roster seeing them now as a threat. When Mid-Nite and his confederates discovered that the Pirate also emotionally influenced Wayne himself in to causing this conflict, the Doctor and Hawkman along with the rest of the Justice Society mended their relationships from then on.

Still later, under the influence of Koehaha aka the River of Ruthlessness, Hawkman and four other Society members were under the water's evil influence thanks to Ultra-Humanite's malevolent machinations. Mid-Nite helped to spearhead behind the scenes the counterattack against the rogue heroes, as their children of Infinity, Inc. were sent to subdue their parents and former guardians until the river's influence subsided with Hawkman and the others returning to normal.

A Tale of Two Fred Cantrells: The Good and the Bad

Fred Cantrell, not exactly a household name in the DC Multiverse. And yet, we see from their life choices, an intellectual and honorable scientist... and a conniving and disreputable crook. Consider the examples of Fred Cantrell... the noble version from Earth-Two and the dishonable version from Earth-One... two sides of the coin.

On the latter Earth, Cantrell was a conman and professional wrestler by trade. Seeking to make a quick profit, this man first attempted to sell oil rights of tribal lands in Nigeria that were not his. After serving his sentence, Fred assuming the guide of the mythical Silver Gorilla, with its powers to bestow long life on those who gift it with precious stones. Swaying a crowd of individuals, Cantrell and his faux-priest partner-in-crime initially profited from this deception, until local legend Congo Bill exposed the pair. As his simian alter ego Congorilla, Bill was able to outmaneuver and defeat the masked Silver Gorilla, leaving Cantrell in the hands of the victims of his crimes.

On the former Earth, over a decade and a half previous, an anthropologist named Fred Cantrell met to love of his life in the secluded land of Feithera. There, he accompanied his friend Carter "Hawkman" Hall, in order to research this advanced alien birdman race. Deciding to remain in this city, he and his wife Osoro had a son in Norda, a lad who would one day become Northwind. Inspired by the example of his godfather Hawkman, Norda joined Carter's son Hector "Silver Scarab" Hall and other young aspiring heroes to form Infinity, Inc.

And so, one path led to happiness from the gift of giving on Earth-Two, and another path led to bitter disappointment from the curse of greed on Earth-One.

Twice-Told-Tales: Pied Pipers Perplex Winged Wonders

Several men have assumed the identity of the Pied Piper. Some were good. Some were bad.

The most famous modern day Piper was Hartley Rathaway, a wealthy lad born deaf, who gained an obsession for music once his hearing was restored. He developed wind instruments that emitted sonic frequencies that spawned a wide array of effects upon their listeners. As the Pied Piper, he used his innate musical aptitude as a supervillain in Central City. Repeatedly, Hartley clashed with the Flash of Earth-One, who defeated him time and time again. Despite his parents' riches, Hartley's second obsession towards crime and his desire to repair them for the money they invested in him over the years kept the Pied Piper active among Flash's Rogues Gallery.

One one occasion, the Piper created a horned instrument for a crook named Elmer, who along with his confederates used it for their crime sprees in Midway City. This attacted the attention of Hawkman. After devising the means to counteract the disorienting effect of their horns, the Winged Wonder brought both Piper, Elmer and their henchmen to justice.

On Earth-Two, that world's Hawkman and Hawkgirl met a mysterious man named the Pied Piper, who had in his possession a horn that exhibited similar disorientation effects when played by their owners. This Piper was benevolent, however, and was taken in by Hawkman's alter ego Carter Hall to be his valet. However, when a crook named Butch and his henchmen broke into Hall's house, they encountered both the Piper and Hawkman himself, who had been in his upstairs workshop. When the gangsters threatened the Piper with Hall's life, the horn player agreed to assist them in criminal pursuits. Soon after, the Winged Wonders captured Butch and his gangsters, and acquainted the Piper with a music band leader that he could play for professionally.

This modern day descendant of the Pied Piper, somewhat reminiscent of the original rat catching musician of fables, seemed to mirror a modern day rat catcher whom Earth-One's Zatanna encountered after seeking out the folklore original. Zatanna's father Zatara on Earth-Two also once encounted the original fabled Piper.

Two other Pied Pipers on his world appeared: a gadgeter who battled Batman without sonic weaponry. The other faux Piper was a henchmen who bedeviled Mister America. Like Elmer, this latter Piper was merely a pawn of another criminal, the Queen Bee. Temporary clones of the Pied Piper also plagued both the Justice League and Jimmy Olsen of Earth-One on occasion.

The actual counterpart of Hartley Rathaway was Isaac Bowlin, who utilized similiar sonic science but through a string instrument as the Fiddler. Both were the preeminent malevolent musicians of their Earths. Each would be frequent collaborators of supervillain teams and fellow Flash foes. Finally, there was the Pied Piper of Earth-S, a recurring rogue of Captain Marvel Junior's.
