Fred Cantrell, not exactly a household name in the DC Multiverse. And yet, we see from their life choices, an intellectual and honorable scientist... and a conniving and disreputable crook. Consider the examples of Fred Cantrell... the noble version from Earth-Two and the dishonable version from Earth-One... two sides of the coin.
On the latter Earth, Cantrell was a conman and professional wrestler by trade. Seeking to make a quick profit, this man first attempted to sell oil rights of tribal lands in Nigeria that were not his. After serving his sentence, Fred assuming the guide of the mythical Silver Gorilla, with its powers to bestow long life on those who gift it with precious stones. Swaying a crowd of individuals, Cantrell and his faux-priest partner-in-crime initially profited from this deception, until local legend Congo Bill exposed the pair. As his simian alter ego Congorilla, Bill was able to outmaneuver and defeat the masked Silver Gorilla, leaving Cantrell in the hands of the victims of his crimes.
On the former Earth, over a decade and a half previous, an anthropologist named Fred Cantrell met to love of his life in the secluded land of Feithera. There, he accompanied his friend Carter "Hawkman" Hall, in order to research this advanced alien birdman race. Deciding to remain in this city, he and his wife Osoro had a son in Norda, a lad who would one day become Northwind. Inspired by the example of his godfather Hawkman, Norda joined Carter's son Hector "Silver Scarab" Hall and other young aspiring heroes to form Infinity, Inc.
And so, one path led to happiness from the gift of giving on Earth-Two, and another path led to bitter disappointment from the curse of greed on Earth-One.
