Costumed Crusaders' Courageous Carbon-Copies

A curious attribute of Earth-One as contrasted with Earth-Two is that many of its greatest champions were not unique, but were simply the most outstanding examples of larger legions of similarly clad costume crusaders. Examples of this amongst members of the Justice League were the Thanagarian Wingmen... of which Hawkman and Hawkwoman were a part, the Green Lanterns Corps... of whom Hal "Green Lantern" Jordan was a member, and the Kandorian Superman Emergency Squad led by Don-El, who protected the original whom they imitated. Then there were the imperfect duplicates of Kal-El / Superman in Bizarro Number One and his fellow Bizarro Supermen. It seems the sole exception to this principal on both worlds were the Wonder Women, who had similarly powered yet distinct fellow Amazonians.

However, upon closer inspection, the corresponding members of the Justice Society each also had larger organizations similar to themselves. Kal-L aka Superman was a member of the All-Star Squadron, with various caped crusaders inspired by him, including the diminutive Darrel "Doll Man" Dane who was his world's Don-El.

Likewise, there was the animated duplicate Supermen spawned by Funny Face, both the 2-dimensional version in movies and the 3-dimensional Flying Tiger who tormented his opposite number.

Similarly, there were the renegade minions of the Vulture King from Thanagar-Two. Centuries earlier, an advanced armada of these Wingmen had attempted to found a colony on Earth-Two, whom the armored avenger known as Silent Knight encountered during one of his adventures. Now seeking to recruit humans into his forces, the Thanagarian Vulture King and his lieutenants used a device known as the Electromizer (their version of the more benevolent device known as the Absorbacron developed on Thanagar-One), which temporarily even brainwashed the Amazing Amazon herself, Wonder Woman! Once defeated, these rogues of Thanagar-Two were placed in Earth prisons.

Finally, there were the Green Dragon Tong, formed by the first wielder of the emerald lamp named Chang… which eventually came into the possession of Alan "Green Lantern" Scott, of whom they would oppose (following a clash with Batman and Robin decades earlier). While the Tong did not possess power rings and batteries as had the Corps, a group of Green Dragon monks did possess the original green lantern and its meteor rocks for centuries, guarding it. A later group of synthetic aliens known as the Sinestro Corps briefly battled Alan Scott and Hal Jordan.

Whatever Happened to the Perisphere and Trylon

A central mystery in the history of the Justice Society was its short-lived satellite headquarters, secretly designed by the sinister Eliminations, Inc. which sought revenge for the heroic team's defeat of its predecessor, the Binary Brotherhood. Retrofitting equipment from their Flying Eye craft, which the Binary Brotherhood’s “Brain Trust” developed as a subterfuge for an alien attack, in order to unite adversarial nations of World War II in peace. When members of the Justice Society of America, accompanied by the All-Star Squadron, thwarted their misguided plan for world peace… the Brotherhood became Eliminations, Inc. This sinister scientists’ society formed a plan to strike back at their costumed foes. In order to accomplish this, they used a historic headquarters, where both teams met until 1945, as a potential death trap!

On Earth-One and Earth-Prime, like Earth-Two, the Perisphere and Trylon were the centerpieces of the 1939 World’s Fair in New York City. By 1940, both structures had falled into disrepair, and were soon after scrapped with the metal being used for the war effort... at least on other Earths. On Earth-Two, perhaps due to superior construction techniques (given that technology on this world was decades ahead of their parallel planets in a number of ways), both building remained until the spring of 1942 when the All-Star Squadron claimed both as their new base of operations. However, once this team dissolved in 1945 at the conclusion of the war, the question remained... whatever happened to these two landmarks?

Again, on other Earths in 1949, the next World’s Fair took place in Haiti. However, on Earth-Two, that year's World’s Fair took place in the midwestern metropolis known as Civic City. There, both buildings were transplanted to that city's designated fair grounds, and were still there the following year in 1950 when disasters struck this burgeoning burg. The sinister Diamond Men from below Earth-Two rose to the surface, both through a notable local geyser and a deep lake within the city's bounderies. On hand to deal with and defeat the Diamond Men were the Justice Society, although one of the subterranean race's incursion into Civic City seemingly toppled the Perisphere and Trylon.

However, the following year in 1951, the Justice Society were lured into orbit above Earth-Two by a mysterious benefactor, who claimed to have bequeathed them a satellite headquarters, specifically designed by his organization. This turned out to be a death trap, one which the seven Society members were able to escape, after which Green Lantern transported the satellite back to Earth. He and his teammates then brought its creators... Professor Ivo and his Eliminations, Inc. cohorts to justice. However, a subsequent congressional hearing into the activities and secret identities of the Justice Society caused the heroes to retire from their costumed crusader for the next twelve years.

Interestingly, the size, shape and dimensions of the JSA satellite mirrored that of the former Perisphere, originally of New York and then of Civil City. It seems that this was one and the same structure, modified by technology incorporated into the Brain Trust's Flying Eye from nearly a decade prior. While its counterpart Perisphere on Earth-One was melted down into scrap metal, it is quite likely that some of this material formed the basis of the Justice League's satellite which they designed in the late 1970s. Like the Perisphere/satellite of Earth-Two, the League's satellite would eventually be destroyed by an attack by an alien race, although their attacker came from another world… the Martians! As for the satellite/Perisphere, it was last seen brought back to the surface Earth-Two by Green Lantern, possibly also turned to scrap metal.

Super Squad Support Supermen Succinctly

Originating from the last surviving Kryptonian city of Kandor, an elite team of recruits assembled to form the diminutive Superman Emergency Squad. Kandor had been shrunken and kept in a bottle by the alien android named Brainiac. Upon defeating Brainiac and claiming the minature city, Superman kept it within his Fortress of Solitude of Earth-One, Each member of this Squad possessed superhuman abilities due to being descendants of Krypton. 

Led by Don-El aka the Super-Mite Superman, cousin of Kal-El aka Superman, they helped the Man of Steel whenever there was a need on Earth-One. While Van-Zee was also a member, he relinquished that responsibly for his career as a scientist. Secretly, he also assumed the alter ego of Nightwing. One other member, Vitor, had briefly left this life behind while attempting to court romance with Lois Lane and Lana Lang, although he soon thereafter rejoined he Squad. This group typically had a dozen active members at any one time. At times, they wore uniforms modeled after that worn by Superman, other times they wore distinctive scarlet colored uniforms. 

On Earth-Two, Kandor wasn't shrunken but instead was digitized by Zor-L, uncle of Kal-L aka Superman into a virtual reality replica. Zor-L housed this program within the Symbioship, which he designed to save his daughter Kara aka Power Girl when Krypton-Two exploded. As such, in place of a Squad supporting Superman that originated from his people, there was a Squadron... of which the golden age Superman was himself a member. 

This All-Star Squadron was formed at the beginning of World War II. Among its many members were Superman himself, as well as Crimson Avenger and the Wing, who mirrored the Kandorian known as Flamebird and his partner Nightwing. Another All-Star was the mighty mite Doll Man, secretly Darrel Dane, a physical look-a-like of Superman! Given this as well as his inherent superhuman strength and near invulnerability, attributes not attributable to his shrinking chemical concoction, there is a possibility he may have been one-eighth Kryptonian. 

Kal-El's great-grandfather Var-El teleported to Earth-One to attempt experiments that were illegal on Krypton-One. It is likely that his counterpart, Var-L, likewise did something similiar. If so, then instead of returning to Krypton-Two, he may have sired another family on Earth-Two while under the identity of 18th century lawman named Dane. This would explain Kal-L and Darrel's kinship, which they displayed when reuniting years after first meeting one another.

The actual doppelgängers of the remaining Kandorian members of the Superman Emergency Squad were Zator’s Seven who trained a young Osgood Armsby who later… along with Doll Man, Crimson Avenger and Wing, became a member of the All-Star Squadron and their third “Doctor” on staff. However, the Seven mostly operated behind the scenes.

Roy's Radical Righteous Retcon Raiders

Roy Thomas impacted both the Marvel and DC Universes, adding a touch of the golden age into his modern day storytelling. As such, several of the classic heroes from the 1940's were revitalized and tied to one another in a masterful manner that provided depth to that era's tales. Chief among these efforts was his introduction of two premier teams during World War II, the Liberty Legion of Earth-616 and their dopplegangers, the All-Star Squadron of Earth-Two. Each of these Freedom Fighters had retired after the War, for the most part, with only a few remaining, while their more famous contemporaries of the Justice Society and the Invaders proved to be lasting legacies as their members reappeared decades later in the Super Squad and Avengers as well.

The parallels are simply stunning, and show the archetypes that made both legends:

• Super-speedsters in love with all-American babes.
• All-American babes in love with super-speedsters. 
• Fin-headed red and blue take-charge leading men.
• Elastic heroes with enigmatic origins and abilities.
• Full-masked fighters imbued with enigmatic energy.*
• Flaming females partners of Great Britain's finest.*
• Green clad caped crusaders floating through the air.
• Winged warriors of exotic origin tied to bird people.
• Similiar clad blue & yellow lads shielded from harm.
• Shiny superheroes emit flame and ice respectively.

*Union Jack and Spitfire were Invaders rather than members of the Liberty Legion, however for purposes of this analysis we consider them in this context given their association with the Legion.

Leaguers Meet All-Stars: Connecting the Dots

A chance encounter between the Justice League and All-Star Squadron due to the temporal machinations of Per Degaton, would be wiped out at the end of their joint adventure when the villain was defeated.  However, little did these ten heroes know of the connections they would have to one another's world. For instance, Firestorm would meet his girlfriend Lorraine "Firehawk" Reilly's twin, Danette "Firebrand" Reilly. Also, JLA member Zatanaa would visit her father Zatara's native world Earth-Two on this case. Not to mention that Commander Steel would meet his future foes of the League, including Aquaman and Zatanna, when decades later while living on Earth-One he tried to undermine this team. Then, of course, this was Robotman's first encounter with inhabitants from his future adopted world.

Global Guardians of Globe-One and Globe-Two!

Two mysterious men tied to ancient legends borne from Africa, Nabu the Wise aka Doctor Fate and former King Nommo now Doctor Mist, realized that they alone could not stem the tied of evil sweeping their respective Earths during the modern era. And so both, using their vast powers, drew heroes to their midst including Superman, Batman and and scores of other heroes. Fate formed the Justice Society and Mist formed the Global Guardians. Of course, Fate's team became the Greatest Heroes of Earth-Two who found counterparts in Earth-One's Justice League. This league came to the attention of Mist, who focused his attention specifically on four Leaguers plus Robin and a pair of heroes-in-training who formed the Super Friends. These Friends would be Mist's first friends after a considerable period in isolation.

Eventually, Mist realized that the rest of Earth-One needed an assembled group of costumed crusaders to stem the tide of evil that was spreading around the globe. Thus, he formed his Guardians while in the company of Superman after initially forming a similar strike force to aid the Super Friends previously. Similar to the Guardians, which potentially consisted of every single superhero of Earth-One, another massive organization that somewhat filled the void on Earth-Two was the Binary Brotherhood. This international team of scientists attempted to unite their planet which was at war, staging a pseudo-alien invasion that was exposed by the All-Star Squadron (of whom Doctor Fate was a member, as well as the counterparts of the Super Friends in Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman and Aquaman). 

While the Super Friends inspired the Global Guardians, with whom they had several adventures together, it was  All-Star Squadron that later inspired the next generation Super-Squad which consisted of Justice Society members and younger recruits Power Girl and Star-Spangled Kid.
