Battered Batteries Bruise Brave & Bold Boys

The source of Hal Jordan and Alan Scott's awesome abilities centered around their parallel power rings, and more specifically the Green Lanterns' power batteries through which they charge these rings with emerald energy. While Alan only had one such battery which endured for centuries, although it had been modified from time to time by its previous owners, Hal actually had two.

Jordan's initially power battery was bequeathed him by his predecessor, the alien Abin Sur, when that Green Lantern crash-landed on Earth-One having sustained fatal injuries. Hal would daily recharge his power ring by touching it the battery. Scott likewise followed this same pattern on Earth-Two with his own ring and battery, given to him by his predecessor the monk Volthoom. 

However, while clashing with his foe the Crumbler, the villain's power glove adversely effected Hal's battery, causing it to be unstable. While away from his homeworld on a mission to planet Oa, home of the Guardians of the Universe who originated both mens' power, Hal's backup Green Lantern named Guy Gardner was shunted into the Phantom Zone while charging his ring on the unstable lantern. The Guardians gave Hal a replacement battery, directing him to destroy the original. Jordan rescued Gardner, whose mind was damaged as a result of the battery's blast.

As for Scott, while his battery remained undamaged, an emerald globe constructed by the designer of the original battery Chang remained in the lampmaker's possession. However, seeking to access the emerald energies to empower his Green Dragon Tong, Chang lured the supervillain Psycho-Pirate into seemingly stealing it from the old man. While it was soon after accidentally destroyed by the Pirate's henchmen, the globe's radiation later empowered the criminal into mentally dominating Scott. This unlocked the power from the battery, allowing Chang to gain abilities on par with Green Lantern himself. That is, until he perished when he failed to realize that its energy had a weakness, wood which through a falling tree ended Chang's life.

Twice-Told-Tales: Danger - Dinosaurs at Large!

It is the summer of 1977 on Earth-One, and the summer of 1968 on Earth-Two. Each world finds themselves plagued by disturbances in time, with humans shifted from the centuries they were born into past eras, with monsterous dinosaurs taking their place in the 20th century. The cause for these odd occurences on parallel worlds is due to green caped time-masters wearing white masks, genetically modified opponents they must face, and cosmic radiation due to celestrial objects. These three factors conspire into strange tales.

On Earth-Two, the villian known as Psycho-Pirate secretly manipulates a fallen felon named Gat Benson, using remnants of the green Starheart meteor to transform him into a giant. Causing terror due to both his appearance and radiation he emits, Gat attracts the attention of the Justice Society charter member known as the Spectre. 

While attempting to use time-suspension and altering time cycles in order to calm an anxious crowd, Spectre inadvertently teleports some citizens of Gateway City to America' colonial era and prehistoric era. While attempting to retrieve these innocents, he exposed some of them to predactory pterodactyls and draws a tyrannosaurus rex back to the present. After battling the beast, Spectre returns it to its era.

On Earth-One, the villian known as Chronos secretly used his temporal technology to retrieve a comet from the future, a comet with special powers over time. Inadvertently, the comet is pulled along with it the crew of future Colonel Tommy Tomorrow into a prehistoric era, where they faced predactory pterodactyls and a tyrannosaurus rex that mutated into the humanoid Tyranno Rex. 

While using his vessel to transport his crew and the comet through a portal back to the future, they end up meeting Captain Comet. As an honorary member of the Justice League, he was working with other Leaguers to subdue the time-displaced dinosaurs. When Tomorrow's vessel arrives in the 20th century, in includes a stowaway in Tyrano Rex, seeking to reclaim the comet. During a battle with Captain Comet and Chronos, Rex in transformed back into a T-Rex, then sent back to its own time.

The villains, Psycho-Pirate and Chronos, are each brought to justice by the heroes with the help of Tommy Tomorrow and Jim Corrigan. While the green meteor globe on Earth-Two is dropped and thus smashed to pieces, the comet is destroyed as well. The Globe was tied to Earth-Two's Green Lantern and his power source, while the comet quite possibly was the Earth-One version of the comet that Lantern's old foe Vandal Savage gained his immortality from centuries earlier on his native world. And while their schemes with these extraterrestrial objects failed, Chronos and Psycho-Pirate would extract from this situation the means to gain greater manipulations over that which they craved. For Chronos, actual time travel that he would use versus the World's Finest Team of Superman and Batman, and for Psycho-Pirate, control over the emerald energy of the meteor through Green Lantern.

Cunning Chang's Crafty Conniving Cultivates Crystal's Control

Chang was a lampmaker in ancient China who witnesses the arrival of a green meteorite, possessing immeasurable power. Using his skill to craft a lamp from a portion of the alien rock, Chang believed this would enable him to harness its energies and bend them to his will. However, the meteorite was a remnant of energy originating from the Starheart, and extraterrestrial entity whose radiation was spawned from a parallel universe. That realm was under the supervision of the Guardians of that Universe, tasked will protecting that dimension from evil spawned from one of their own. While the energy they encased in a globe was incompatiable in their universe, it was functional in that of the universe that contained Earth-Two, where the meteorite landed.

Given his evil agenda, the energized entity behind the meteorite struck out at Chang and his servants, however their master survived thanks to the piece of rock that the lampmaker clunk to. Embittered that he was denied his dreams, Chang was still gifted with immortality, and thus founded an order of minions known as the Green Dragon Tong that would serve him. Naturally, he was opposed by fellow Chinese of a more noble disposition, who claimed the lantern and gave it to a time displaced Alan Scott in the middle ages, as well as other worthy possessors down through the centuries.

Chang knew that in order to control the lantern, he had to corrupt the power behind it. And so, Chang lured an unsuspecting dupe in Charles Halstead, aka Psycho-Pirate. Halstead sought liberation from a debilitating mask the uncased his emotion-enducing powers originating from his facial expressions. Thinking he had stolen a powerful green globe from the old man, secretly Chang, he had in fact used his powers as the Psycho-Pirate to turn the globe's energies to his will. This freed him from the mask, and was the impetus for his next actions.

And thus, Psycho-Pirate naturally gravitated to the current weilder of that same emerald energy in Green Lantern, mentally controlling a distraught Alan Scott who was himself embittered at the loss of his previous Gotham Broadcasting Company. For a brief period, Green Lantern as well as fellow Justice Society members Flash and Batman, fought their teammates before recovering their senses. Psycho-Pirate was soon defeated by his adversaries, although his corruption of Scott and his power ring led to Chang finally gaining control over his own emerald powerstone. Soon after, Chang battled for control of the lantern with Scott, and only due to his being oblivious as to the weakness of the meteorite radiation to wood was Chang defeated forevermore. Still, Chang was far craftier than his Earth-One counterpart and fellow immortal Shann-Chi.

Salesmen Supreme ... Psycho Pirates

Funky Flashman of Earth-One was a conman who was under the employee of Colonel Mockingbird, who passed away leaving his remaining fortune to his fiendish friend. Finding his regular allowance installments dwindling, Flashman decided to offer his services as a manager of the escape artist performer known as Mister Miracle. After seeing the young man display his awesome abilities, Funky asked Miracle his secret, which the las revealed was his alien Mother Box portable computer. During commotion caused by a battle between the Female Furies and his new clients, Scott Free who was Miracle and his girl Big Barda, Flashman attempted stealing the device but discarded it when unable to activate it. Leaving these dangerous potential clients behind,  Flashman sought a bigger score to grab him wealth and fame, which came to the notice of Free's wicked step-father Darkseid of Apokolips.

Charley Halstead of Earrh-Two was a linotyper for the Daily Courier who became discouraged at his lack of success in life. Employing schemes based on several human emotions, Halstead as the original Psycho-Pirate was able to manipulated both criminals and his eventually nemesis the Justice Society of America. When the Society defeated him, Halstead was locked in prison, but soon thereafter returned for two more schemes in subsequent years that led him once more toward battling the Society, including returning member Green Lantern. Eventually, he was caught as "William Wilson" when utilizing his will upon unsuspecting victims in his sinister schemes. Halstead was sent to prisons for decades. However, he knew of the existence of the Medusa Masks that could literally manipulated minds, but was to old himself to utilize them.

So, the aged man recruited his cellmate Roger Hayden into locating these masks once he was paroled from prison, and seek revenge versus the Society. Having battled various members of that heroic team as the new Psycho-Pirate, Halstead's research guided Hayden to locate the Medusa Masks allowing him to control emotions through force of will and facial expressions.

Funky finally found a fleeting fortune amid felons when he helped found Darkseid's Secret Society of Supee-Villains. Through different incarnations, Flashman provided the business front for this illegitimate business first led by the Manhunter, then Lex Luthor, Gorilla Grodd and the Wizard of Earth-Two. Through it all, Flashman was secretly aiding Wizard's quest in obtaining various objects of power, at which point the villain abandoned Flashman by exiling him from the Society.

While Wizard brought a contingent of Super-Villains to his home world, in order to battle the Justice Society which both he and Halstead were frequent foes of, Funky swore vengeance on the Villains. However, as Funky Flashman never reappeared, it seems he felt such an effort wasn't worth it.

Bedeviling Brains Brawn Beauties & Bad Boys

The Brain was a former French scientist whose body had expired had his brain transplanted into a sophisticated receptacle connected to a large computer network. This procedure was performed by his assistant, Monsieur Mallah, who had himself formerly been an ape that was granted vast intellect by his master's treatments. Together, they formed the Brotherhood of Evil, adding to their ranks former actress Laura DeMille who after a traumatic accident became the shape-changing Madame Rouge. She repeatedly tormented the Doom Patrol, and even on one occasion clashed with the Flash along with them!

There was a Monster Society of Evil on Earth-Two that paralleled Brain's Hood of Brothers, even with its own mad mind leading it… the alien Mister Mind who assembled it. However, it was another crooked cranium and his bestial associate who were counterparts to the Brain and Mallah, that being industrialist Jason Rogers and his twin brother who never developed a body. This disembodied brain willed Jason's body into becoming the beast-like Monster. His brother Jason Roger’s ex-wife Kathe adopted the criminal alias of Princess Helene, as her psyche was traumatized by discovering of her ex-husband’s twin nature. Like her counterpart Madame Rouge, Princess Helene was able to alter her form and battled both the doomed Patrol of Earth-Two… consisting of Fred, Pedro and Slim… as well as her world’s Flash.

Along the way, other super villains such as Garguax and General Immortus joined the Brotherhood for a time, on each occasion battling and facing defeat versus the Doom Patrol. The counterparts on Earth-Two of Garguax and his alien masters were a similar set of alien gamesman who abducted several star athletes including the golden age Flash, who ended up defeating them which forced them to return their captives to Earth-Two.

While Immortus was formerly an ancient Egyptian Pharoah who had come into possession of an immortality seeing which kept him alive for millennia, his doppleganger likewise possessed the gift of immortality through other means. This man, Khalis, came into conflict with ancient protector Nabu in Egypt. Kept imprisoned into the 20th century, Khalis returned to claim his former object of power which his old foe removed from him an gave to his apprentice Doctor Fate of Earth-Two. Around the same time that Khalis made his failed attempt at restoring what he once had, likewise Immortus had sought out Arani, the wife of his former employee turned arch enemy in Niles Caulder who took the new immortality serum originally intended to revive the General's lost youth. Once more the Doom Patrol defeated Immortus, who like Khalis seemingly perished.

Other recruits in the Monster Society were Ramulus and Nyola as well as the willful stone brute known as Oom, which made this evil assemblage a true threat to the All-Star Squadron.

After a number of encounters, the Brotherhood fractured as Rogue rebelled against both the Brotherhood's Brain (who was her master) and the Patrol's Chief (whom she loved), seemingly destroying both groups. The Monster Society had fractured leadership wherein its first leader Mister Mind left that Earth for another, then its second leader Oom was destroyed. 

While never joining the Monster Society even though it had the same name as the villain himself, the Monster was recruited by time tyrant Per Degaton into a group of supervillains who battled the All-Star Squadron in the early 1940's. And the Monster would share opponents with Robotman and his teammates as would his world's version of the Brotherhood of Evil, in the form of Mister Mind’s Monster Society of Evil.

 

Back on Earth-One, the Brain assembled a second team of villains from around the world to compose his new Brotherhood of Evil, this time battling the New Teen Titans and their ally Robotman. Meanwhile, the original Psycho-Pirate enlisted fellow cellmate Roger Hayden to become his protegee in foul play on Earth-Two with Hayden dueling with Hourman and Doctor Fate.

As a result, two teams of a sort were formed to torment the heroes of their worlds.  First, there was the fear-inducing Phobia (Angela Hawkins) and Psycho-Pirate II both of whom used their abilities to affect other humans' emotions. Next there was dimensional traveling Warp and  Mango the Mighty, which cause their foes to phase out of reality. Next there was mentally manipulating Houngan aka Jean Louis-Droo and Mayoor, who used unexplained science to control men. Finally, Psycho-Pirate solicited the services of former crime boss Gat Benson, transformed by green plasma into a gigantic beast much like that of the Brotherhood's Plasmus, who used to be Otto Von Furth until his physiology had been altered due to exposure to radioactive radium.

The Brotherhood of Evil invaded the African country of Zandia and later resurfaced in America, never finding success in the schemes of their leader. Psycho-Pirate struck off on his own after his previous allies Wotan, Mayoor and Benson had failed him, controlling a team of Justice Society members Green Lantern, Flash and Batman until the trio were defeated as was their puppet-master by the rest of the team. The Pirate then allied himself with the Secret Society of Super-Villains until the Crisis when he became the Anti-Monitors right-hand henchmen for a brief time.
