Chemo was the depository of Professor Ramsey Norton's failed experiments. Only the chemical mixture gave the human shaped trash can some rudimentary form of sentience. On Earth-One, it was a perpetual adversary of the Metal Men, who repeatedly battled its onslaught of terror and destruction which it left in its wake. They would battle this entity several times as it continued to be revived with the insidious intent of devouring all living entities in its path.
Starman aka Ted Knight had been exiled alongside his fellow Justice Society members during the middle of World War II into hyper-space exile by Nazi scientists. Ted's ultimate destination in his mini-rocket was that dimension's version of Jupiter. Meeting a group of Metal Men with organic insides, he was quickly recruited to assist them in combating the nefarious Red Spot organism that was claiming their planet.
While Chemo would be rendered inert repeatedly, Red Spot was exiled from Hyper-Jupiter by a gigantic gravity rod which Starman constructed the aid of the Metal Men. In the end, two giants roamed their respective universes, a Walking Weapon and Queer Quicksand, battling teams of metallic marvels and suffering defeat.
