Losers of Two Worlds - Winners in the End

Four individuals from World War II... the pilot known as Johnny Cloud, a seaman named Captain Storm, and a pair of grunts going by Gunner and Sarge... composed an elite force by the moniker of the Losers. Why? Well, they each lost fellow mates during this conflict and were brought together under their diverse disciplines to be sent out into difficult missions. And despite their name, they almost always came up winners, succeeding in accomplishing their strategic goals. Along the way they worked along famous fighters as Sgt. Rock and his Easy Company, and the so-called Haunted Tank force.

However, in 1944 they finally succumbed to the tragedy that those around them had faced through the years. During the Crisis on Infinite Earths, while protecting the war torn European country on Monrovia, they were each killed by anti-matter universe shadow beings. However, a concurrent tale published at that time stated they died during a typical military confrontation from man-made weaponry? How could this be?

During the Crisis, the Monitor who protected the positive matter universe created five vibrational forks in order to save the prime universes of Earths One and Two. One was placed on Earth-One's ancient Atlantis of Arion, another was placed in that world's old western period, while a third existed in an  alternate Earth-AD's future known as the Great Disaster. A fourth fork was placed in Earth-Two's medieval period of Camelot as evidenced by the appearance of that world's Shining Knight and Vandal Savage. 

The fifth fork would have to have been placed in some era on Earth-Two to balance the alignment of both spheres of reality, and this is confirmed by a statement made by Sgt. Rock when superheroes appear in Monrovia during the shadow beings' attack. Rock asks why these "All-Stars" (i.e. All-Star Squadron members) or mystery men (which were what they called superheroes in that decade) aren't stateside but in the trenches. Hence, this is the same Sgt. Rock and Easy Company previously seen in wartime team-ups with Earth-Two's Batman and Wonder Woman, and hence the Haunted Tank and Losers on the scene (whom they knew when they had also arrived on scene) are also residents of Earth-Two. 

While those Losers died due to alien invaders, the Losers in the Losers Special issue resided on the then superhero-less Earth-One.
