Carl Sands and Ian Karkull were two men seeking to pierce the veil of darkness toward their criminal advantage. Thanks to Sands meeting an exploring alien and Karkull studying an ancient civilization, each found the means to transform their bodies into immaterial shadows. This allowed them to touch objects while rendering themselves intangible to their foes.
Sands began his career as the Shadow-Thief after inadvertently saving the life of alien Thar Dar who gave him a Dimensiometer which allowed Carl to becoming a living shadow. The Thief was a perpetual pest of Earth-One's Hawkman and Hawkgirl, and later enemies of the Justice League on two occasions. He was also a charter member of the Injustice Gang of the World.
Ian Karkull’s arch-enemy was Earth-Two’s Doctor Fate, and after two confrontations with the hero Karkull was left permanently in his shadow form insane yet potently powerful. This led Ian the forming a precursor to the Injustice Society of his world with various adversaries of Fate and his teammates in the Justice Society of America, for whom he ultimately battled including the Hawkman of Earth-Two. This confrontation seemingly led to Karkull’s destruction while myriads of shadow fragments irradiated and enbued the Society members with lengthen life spans.
