Maria was an inspirational leader of a workers' rebellion, seeking to overturn the tyranny of the ruling elite that had subjegated the people of her era. In some renditions of this tale, Maria was a descendant of Lois Lane and her one true love was a descendant of Clark Kent, who aided her in her cause. Opposing them was the evil scientist know as Rotwang, hismelf said to have come from a long line of Luthors. Seeking to keep control over the masses, Rotwang kidnapped Marie and created a cybernetic duplicate of her that he would use to mislead the people. When this scheme failed to work and Maria was set free, the robot was destroyed. However, Rotwang recreated her as Mekanique, sending her back in time to alter history so that he would win. Whether he succeeded is unknown, although Mekanique had manipulated the All-Star Squadron into saving a girl, which ended up causing Maria to never have been born. From this point, the evil robot battled various heroes over the years as had the equally malevolent Multi-Woman on Earth-One.
These ladies utilized various devices and tools to help them replicate superhuman abilities. Superwoman used an opal beam amulet and gravity redistribution flight belt to enable her to create space warps, decrease the mass of objects she could then lift, and the power to fly through the air. Mekanique used her neutron shields, electron beams and a chrono-crystal which could alter reality and enabled her to travel though time.
