The Emerald Crusaders had to make a living, and they did so while often on the move from city to city, job to job. Finding whatever employment was necessary to supplement their true careers as crime fighters, each Green Lantern found a diverse lifestyle while meeting interesting folk along the way.
Hal Jordan began his career as a test pilot at Ferris Aircraft, testing prototype planes for his employer Carol Ferris... herself running the company in behalf of her father.... while forming a friendship with mechanic Thomas Kalmaku Despite a budding romance between the two, tension developed and he eventually moved on. On Earth-Two, Ferris' counterpart corporation was All-American Aviation headed by Hop Harrigan and his mentor Prop Wash as well as his buddy mechanic Ikky, wherein they also tested some of Prop's flying inventions.
Alan Scott was trained as an engineer, initially on trains traveling cross-country, something his counterpart would later do driving trucks. However, he would find his true niche when employed at Apex Broadcasting in Capitol City, first as an engineer then as an executive when he moved to Gotham City to head Gotham Broadcasting Company's WXYZ station. While Apex's doppleganger on Earth-One was United Broadcasting Company (wherein another green and purple crusader with a power gem, Metropolis' Blackrock, was employed), on that same world instead of GBC's station it was Cosmic Broadcasting's WHAM-TV... the channel that spotlighted another garishly costumed crusader in the form of the Creeper aka Jack Ryder!
Along the way, Jordan's own travels brought him to Evergreen City where he became an adjustor for the Evergreen Insurance Agency, until deciding driving semi-trucks was the way to getaway from the mundane city life.
Scott's vested interest in crimefighting over managing GBC eventually led to the company's financial collapse, at which point he moved once more. This time, in Keystone City, living with his old pal Jay (the Flash) Garrick and Jay's wife Joan... Alan was employed at Garrick Labs under his chosen profession. This would not last for either hero, as Hal was once more drawn back to Ferris Aircraft... although he spent a year in exile protecting his space sector under direction of his masters.
Alan was enticed back into the airwaves after moving to Los Angeles when he purchased a local station. This move by Scott was no doubt motivated by the initial interest by Universal Broadcasting Corporation also based in Gotham. This company was previously known as Sees-All-Tells-All News, which Alan’s All-Star Squadron teammate Johnny Chambers (aka Johnny Quick) worked for as a camera newsman. On Earth-One, the similar Galaxy Broadcasting System was based in Metropolis taking up a portion of the Daily Planet with its WGBS-TV news studios.
Undoubtedly, these Green Lanterns did not know how to root themselves in any one community for very long!
