Wesley Dodds as the Sandman of Earth-Two began his career with a gas-mask and a gas-gun in his arsenal, and was recruited as a charter member of the Justice Society of America. He soon encountered Brain Wave who used a cerebral augmenting mechanism to plunge his Society foes into dreams of his making. Dodds girlfriend Dian Belmont even followed in his footsteps as a second "Sandman" before her untimely demise. Eventually, Wes changed to a spandex costume more in line with most superheroes of his day, and adopted a sidekick in Sandy Hawkins, although this partnership also ended in tragedy when a weapon they were experimenting on backfired and mutated Sandy into a silicon creature, until decades later he was restored to normal.
Decades later on Earth-One, a second Sandman was born within the Dream Dimension... a man named Garrett Sanford. Sanford was a scientist tasked with saving prominent man trapped in a living nightmare... and after freeing him found that he himself was now a prisoner in this dimension except during one hour a day when he would return to his native world to protect it. Among those whom he encountered in his adventures was a future lad, Kamandi aka Tommy Tomorrow of an alternate timeline, who was the doppleganger of Sandy. Sanford would one day aid the Justice League of America versus Doctor Destiny, himself a version of Dian though twisted towards evil, and be offered membership which he politely declined.
