Captain Horatio Strong discovered an extraterrestrial seaweed etable known as Sauncha. When ingesting this unique type of food, Strong gained superhuman strength and other more unorthodox abilities, such as the power of "swimming" through the air on wind current... making him appear to fly. However, a side effect of this chemical concoction was that he became mentally unstable.
Captain Strong was originally ambassador Joseph Clanton, tasked with mediating a peace settlement between warring parties. However, when he was shot in an attempted assassination, surgeons used an experimental anesthetic to revive him and stabilize his condition. Unfortunately, this caused him to recall memories of his ancestor, the original Captain Strong, as well as granting him superhuman strength and other unorthodox abilities such as the power of flight. This left him mentally unstable.
Strong sought to make a living selling the Sauncha through a private company, although only he knew of where it was located. When the owner of said company rejected his proposal, Strong sought to avenge himself for this perceived slight. Thankfully, the Earth-One Superman was able to hold back the Captain, until Strong came to realize he had become addicted to the Sauncha upon repeated uses.
Skull sought a buried treasure that his ancestor had buried in Gateway City centuries ago. This led to him battling first police detective Jim Corrigan and then Jim's alter ego, the Earth-Two Spectre. The Captain's Megacyclic powers seem invincible, until his foe draws him back in time to the era of the original Skull in 1751.
Superman and Strong next faced an alien who had landed on Earth-One centuries ago, and turned into a bestial mutant due to that world's atmosphere. After restoring the alien to normal, Superman brought him back to his native era so that he could return to his homeworld.
Spectre and Strong ventured back several eras during their repeated clashes, wherein they both met ancestors of Clanton's. Eventually, both Horatio and Joseph would resume their normal lives, after further meetings with Strong's longlost father and Skull's long forgotten forebearers.
