Dinah Laurel Lance was a complicated woman. From her memories, she recalled living in another universe, and moved from her homeworld of Earth-Two to that of Earth-One following the death of her husband. And she would continue to believe this for a number of years, as she joined the Justice League of America, and developed a romantic attachment with her teammate Green Arrow. Together, the pair would protect Star City from a number of threats, while alongside their fellow League members they would likewise protect their world. Even on a few occasions, Dinah returned to her native Earth-Two to aid whom she believe were her former teammates in the Justice Society, such as while facing the Injustice Society and the evil Adjudicator. Little did she know there was a hidden truth about her very nature. She wasn't whom she thought she was!
In fact, she later discovered that the supervillain known as the Wizard, seeking revenge for Black Canary's interferrence with the second incarnation of that Injustice Society back in the 1940's, used his powers to afflict the daughter of Canary with a seemingly uncontrollable sonic cry. Not knowing how to handle this, she and her husband Larry consulted with her old friends and fellow Socialites, Johnny Thunder and his Thunderbolt. Together, they devised the solution of keeping young Dinah Laurel in a comatose state within the Thunderbolt's Dimension, until such time when older when she could master her abilities.
After placing her there in peaceful slumber, Thunderbolt caused the memories of Johnny, Larry and Black Canary... also known as Dinah Drake Lance... to forget that the baby girl was still alive. With the memory that she died of crib death, her parents were able to cope with her loss. However, many years later while facing the cosmic threat known as Aquarius, Larry died due to exposure from the being's cosmic radiation. Seeking to leave painful memories behind, the elder Dinah decided to leave Earth-Two and join the League. However, she soon succumbed to the same radiation, which would prove fatal to her. Realizing her daughter was still alive in a suspended animation, she beseached Superman to bring her to the Thunderbolt's dimension. There, the Thunderbolt himself upon her suggestion transferred the life experiences of the mother to her daughter, who would become the next Black Canary.
And it was these memories which caused Dinah Laurel, while in battle with a fire-controlling villain named Bonfire, to hesitate and nearly lose her life. She then realized that her mother had decades earlier on Earth-Two experience a similar fight, versus the cosmic twin of Bonfire in the femme fatale known as Pyra-Maniac. The elder Black Canary was unable to defeat Pyra on her own, and so presumably recruited aid from her then partner Johnny Thunder. However, some memories were obscured as the younger Dinah started to overwrite memories of her mother in time.
The younger Dinah decided to break free from the memories implanted of her mother's life, crafting a new fireproof costume as the Black Canary. Using her sonic cry, which her mother did not possess, Canary was able to overpower Bonfire without the aid of her own crimefighter partner in Green Arrow. And so, Dinah Laurel now on Earth-One became her own woman.
