The vast legion of supervillians whom the Green Lanterns have faced and defeated is staggering. For Hal Jordan, the include Sinestro, Hector Hammond, Star Sapphire, Evil Star, Sonar, Black Hand, Goldface... to name just a few. For Alan Scott, these consist of Solomon Grundy, Vandal Savage, Harlequin, Knodar, Sky Pirate, Icicle, Gambler, Icicle... just the tip of the iceburg (pun intended). Yet they also had scores of one-hit-wonders whom they also tangled with.
Perhaps the ones with the greatest untapped potention were a pair of Barons. Each were bent on domination, at the expense of their respective emerald ring clad foe. There was wealthy industrialist Baron Tyrano of Earth-One and German warlord known as the Baron of Earth-Two.
Tyrano was born into privilege of both wealth and technology, yet he had a several liability. His body was paralyzed from the neck down, and in order to remain alive he needed to live within a modified iron lung. Over time, he began to study the Green Lantern, and determined that the hero's alter ego was Hal Jordan. Hal was at that time an insurance salesman in Washington State, and was sent to Tyrano's compound to respond to claims the Baron made against Green Lantern... whom he claimed damaged his estate with his power ring.
The other Baron was sent under the direction of American Nazi saboteur Kritz Claver, leader of the Grey-Shirts which were infilitrating major cities in the United States during the early days of World War II. The Baron commandeered a high-tech dirigible and used its equipment to jam radio transmitters in the area. His goal was to reclaim Krapek, a German expatriot now a naturalized American citizen.
Baron Tyrano used a special energized missle shaped in his form, which was guided into the flight path of Green Lantern. Upon collision, Lantern and his Jordan personas were separated. The Green Lantern portion was held captive in the Baron's mansion, where he intended to transplant their minds into each other's bodies. However, the Hal half charged into the complex, fought of Tyrano's guards and freed Green Lantern, who captured and incarcerated Tyrano and his henchmen.
As for the Baron of Earth-Two, he attempted to overpower Green Lantern when the caped crusader charged into his dirigible headquarter, using his electron gun. With the help of Krapek, Green Lantern was able to destroy the dirigible's controls causing it to explode... along with the Baron and his henchmen.
