Sergeant Gardner Grayle was chosen for an experimental virtual reality on Earth-One experiment by the American government. Within this facility, Grayle's mind constructed an artificial reality from his mind, wherein a great disaster occurred on his world in a future era. Within this chamber, his mind formulated a series of "Strange Adventures" as leader of the Atomic Knights. Fortunately, Superman intervened and helped liberate Grayle and the other staff trapped within this post-Apokoliptic nightmare.
Lieutenant General Helmut Streicher was a Nazi scientist tasked with preventing the initial members of Earth-Two's Justice Society from invading an essential German stronghold under his command. Using his robot, the Murder Machine, he was able to subdue Green Lantern, Flash and Batman. Although the trio were soon after freed by fellow mystery men from America, Streicher realized the benefit of incorporating his machine's armor into a uniform, which he himself would later ware.
In his virtual reality adventures, Graynor was aided in his adventures by his fellow Atomic Knights. These were scientist Brendon Smith, identical twins Hollis and Wayne Hobarb, and Douglas Herald with his sister Doctor Marene Herald. Together, these six simulated soldiers vented into post-Apocalyptic versions of Los Angeles, Detroit, New Orleans, New York and Washington D.C. Then with the help of Superman and the real Doctor Marene Hobarb, Gaynor’s mind uncoupled from the simulator, and a new reality faced Gardner… the real life he had left behind years earlier when he first entered the experimental program. Now he had to assimilate to the world as it is rather than the world he predicted… although the experience open his mind to the ability of analyzing future probabilities, which would launch him into the next phase of his extraordinary life.
Some months later, Gardner would obtain a flying battle suit of armor which he borrowed from S.T.A.R. Labs, providing him with advanced technological weaponry, including red sun radiation, energy projection along with life-sustaining and strength-enhancing mechanisms along with the power of flight. With this mobile battle suit in his possession, after he discovered his exposure to the computer-synthesized reality helped developed within him analytical awareness of potential future threats to humanity.
Streicher's further advancements led to his new suit of armor, and as the Red Panzer he repeatedly matched wits with Wonder Woman. Red Panzer's personal agenda was to acquire future technologies, and knowledge using his temporal grappling hook, to gain ultimate power. This inadvertently pulled the Wonder Woman of Earth-One back in the 1940's of Earth-Two, where she met her counterpart and the two Amazing Amazons battled Red Panzer.
Grayle as the Atomic Knight assisted Wonder Woman in helping to avert a potential nuclear threat to their world, precipitated from an alien invasion. Although initially believing he needed to immobilize Wonder Woman to eliminate the threat, Gardner worked alongside the Amazon Amazon in repelling the off-world threat and cooling international tensions.
In a later clash, Panzer worked alongside a fellow German scientist in Paula VonGunther along with her “slave girls” (which included the counterpart to Marene Hobarb), where they attempted to finally achieve their plans of world conquest for their leader. When defeated by Wonder Woman and a new American hero named the Bombardier, Streicher ended his Red Panzer career, and was presumably convicted for war crimes following the conclusion of World War II.
