The buffer dimension between universes, later labeled as interdimensional limbo, was a realm first accessed in the 20th century by inhabitants of Earth. Although traversed when individuals migrated from one dimensional plane to another, it was first used as a base of operations by the Crime Champions in 1963. The six supervillians, three from Earth-One and three from Earth-Two, built a secret base in limbo to elude capture by their foes the Justice League and Justice Society. Despite this, they were defeated, and this headquarters would years later be where those two heroic teams and a third, Earth-S' Squadron of Justice, would meet during a future crisis.
Shortly after battling the Crime Champions, the League and Society encountered the Crime Syndicate of Earth-Three. After a series of battles, the Syndicate was captured and left in an emerald shperical prison created by Green Lantern and his allies, within limbo itself. Given limbo's timeless nature, this was a shorter period of time from the Syndicate's perspective than that of the Earths, where several years passed.
This realm was next breached by the Secret Society of Super-Villians, traveling from Earth-One to Earth-Two, led by the Wizard who sought to finally defeat his foes in the Justice Society with his new cronies. They and their opponent Captain Comet inadverently met, freed then faced the Syndicate... who briefly returned to Earth-Three then were sent back to limbo.
While this was occuring, a sentient species that developed from within limbo known as the Glorn were using their biologically based science to pierce the dimensional fabric, searching for an individual with the means to permanently open the portal between worlds. As they rose to intelligence due to radio waves seeping in from the Earths... radio waves first picked up and amplified by devices created by the evil genius worm known as Mister Mind...they knew that sonic energy was needed not only to teleport to other universes but also to stabilize their modified bodies.
Dinah "Black Canary" Lance was a native of Earth-Two who migrated to Earth-One and possessed sonic powers bequeathed on her out of vengeance by her mother's old adversary the Wizard. Due to both her transdimensional nature and her "canary cry", the Glorn's leader the Hivemaster pinpointed that she was the key to their conquest of her adopted world. However, after kidnapping the Canary and then ensnaring both she and her boyfriend Oliver "Green Arrow" Queen, the Glorn left themselves open to an attack by the pair. Surmising that radio waves turned the insectoid Glorn into intelligent creatures, she used her Justice League communicator to flood the Glorn's citadel with radio waves. No longer protected by the high-pitch cry of the Canary, the lower frequency radio waves transformed the Glorn back to their original non-threatening insectoid forms.
Thus, when years later a new Secret Society of Super-Villians from Earths One and Two were themselves exiled within interdimensional limbo, they never encountered the sentinent Glorn.
