Hector Hammond finally conceived the perfect scheme to finally rid himself of his arch-enemy, Green Lantern. Discovering that his mortal foe was an agent of the superior powered Guardians of the Universe, Hammond used his awesome mental abilities to construct an energy duplicate of a Guardian from Oa, presenting itself as a renegade Oan. Launching a three-pronged attack to overwhelm Hal Jordan in his Green Lantern identity, Hector nearly achieved a victory. That is, until Hal recalled the existence of a place of refuge… Earth-Two!
While there, Hal sent his power ring back to Earth-One, hidden within Hector’s garments. Drawn to the ring, the Guardian constrict battled the paralytic Hammond, whose immortal invulnerable body protected him from his creation’s energy attacks. Destroying the faux-Guardian, he helped eliminate the threat he himself spawned!
Chuck Grayson found himself immobilized, kept in suspended animation, as he was succumbing to a fatal brain disease. His dying wish was to preserve his body, so that his old friend Robert Crane… now the metallic Robotman… might one day be able to transplant his brain back into a human body.
As Crane migrated to Earth-One, it would be several years before he learned of his friend’s precious gift. When Robotman became aware of this through his old ally Hank “Steel” Heywood, he journeyed back to Earth-Two and assumed the life… and identity… of Chuck Grayson. And so, immobile doppelgängers Hector Hammond and Chuck Grayson saved heroes of their worlds who now resided in the other’s universe.
While Hammond was a perpetual adversary of Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern, Grayson was an associate of his friend Crane’s teammates in the All-Star Squadron. However, on one occasion when Chuck and Robotman attempted to revive the future menacing mechanical maiden known as Mekanique, he and Robert had a brief conflict with the Squadron including Alan “Green Lantern” Scott. During this confrontation, Air Wave inflicted Chuck with an head injury which may have accelerated his medical condition.
