Ryan Chase fee up in a circus, and decided to capitalize on physical training and inventive genius to become the next big superhero of Metropolis on Earth-One. Designed a specialized rocket-pack allowing him to fly for short distances and a crash helmet allowing him to collide into objects or opponents head first, he adopted the alias of the Human Cannonball.
Trick Tate was a con artist seeking to slyly steal the secret to superspeed from the so-called “Monarch of Motion”, Johnny Quick of Earth-Two. Employing specialist motors on his head gear, mercury-lined boots and a mobile projectile that could launch him as a Human Cannonball, Tate as Mercury tricked Johnny into revealing his secret mathematic speed formula of 3x2(9yz)4a.
Human Cannonball sought out Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane to be his press agent and advertise his heroics. Together the pair dealt with a series of threats, from capturing an energized Tina Ames to battling the Cougar Gang and later the corrupt Project DNA. Ryan Chase left Metropolis to seek greener pastures outside the shadow of Superman.
Mercury then possessed the speed abilities of reporter Johnny Chambers, and started a high-velocity crime wave that Chambers’ heroic alter ego had to end on two occasions. During their second meeting, Johnny Quick confused Trick Tate with several bogus math formulas, causing the crook to forget how to reenergize himself when the speed formula ran out.
