Doctor Simon Ecks developed technology allowing him to transform his energy aura into a sentient being powered by electricity. This entity named Double X caused the introverted scientist to turn to crime as Doctor Double X. Together the problematics pair of “brothers” soon found themselves in conflict either the Dynamic Duo of Earth-One’s Gotham City, Batman and Robin, who defeated and captured the X’s.
Doctor Doog utilized his mental manipulation abilities to steal technology from Professor Davis, constricting an ultra-dynamo to empower Doog’s Brotherhood of the Electron. Soon after, Earth-Two Gotham City’s newest superhero Starman wielding another of Davis’ inventions against Doctor Doog and his Brotherhood. Starman’s Gravity Rod proved more than a match to Dr. Doog’s device, destroying it, with its menacing master seemingly perishing.
Doctor Double X and his brother Double X resurfaced several weeks after this to once more challenge the Caped Crusaders of Gotham. This time, Batman used Ecks’ device to create an electrified aura duplicate of himself called Batman-X, who overwhelmed Double X.
Years later, while residing in Arkham Asylum, Ecks discovered that Double X laid dormant within him and revived his synthetic brother once more. However, in order to keep Double X in existence, Doctor Ecks had to keep him charged by siphoning electrical currents from power companies. Unfortunately for Doctor C and Double X, Batman and his pal Superman captured them once more.
Doctor Doog was recruited and financed by Ian Karkull on a scheme whereby numerous costumed criminals attempted to assassinate future presidents. With the finances provided him by his wealthy benefactor, Doctor Doog was able to rebuild his ultra-dynamo to use in assassin scheme. However, the Justice Society were tipped off to Karkull’s master plan, and individual members were sent to sequester the villain’s co-conspirators. Hourman was tasked with thwarting Doog, which he was only able to accomplish with the aid of Starman.
A female psychologist took on as her clients Doctor Ecks and another supervillain, Roy G. Bivilo aka Rainbow Raider. Attempting to motivate the pair into succeeding in crime where previously they failed, she tasked each of them to battle the other man’s superhero adversary. While Rainbow Raider confronted and captured Batman, Doctor Double X and his brother did the same for his old foe’s Justice League teammate, the Flash. However, once brought to a secluded island, Batman and Flash together overcame the Double X’s and the Raider.
Years after his last defeat, Doctor Doog moved his Brotherhood of the Electron out west and as the Thinker hatched a scheme taking advantage of recently released criminals to broke slave labor for his encampment. When Batman and Robin discovered this, they infiltrated Doog’s secluded citadel and cornered him. In a final confrontation, the Thinker was thwarted by electrical current from his equipment which electrified Doog.
While electricity proved fatal to Doctor Doog, who could not internalize is but rather used it as an external force against his foes, this same energy was invigorating for Doctor Ecks. With this energy flowing through his body, he could repeatedly spawn Double X, who possessed superhuman strength, the power of flight, and the agility to discharge massive amounts of electricity. However, by doing so, this left Doctor X and Double X further weakened over time and vulnerable to their opponents.
Interestingly, while these same electrical currents allowed Doctor Ecks to mentally connect with his brother Double X, different cranial currents were flowing through the kind of the Thinker… Doctor Doog. With this mental electricity, Doog not only mentally manipulated Professor Davis but also his minions in his Brotherhood of the Electron. Yet despite their seemingly indomitable abilities, Doctors Ecks and Doog met this matched in the the Masked Manhunters pursuing them time and again.
