Various threats conspired against the United States, from opposing nations to secretive societies. One is the preeminent threats were launched against the Americans by Scorpio Number One and Yellow Scorpion. These hood and cloaked criminal masterminds led their foreign forces against the USA, opposed by spandex clad protectors.
Number One and his minions in Scorpio hatched a scheme wherein they lured the mutated human known as the Sponge, a creature formerly a benevolent human diver, into a conflict with the Challengers of the Unknown. Together with their fellow fantastic foursome known as the Sea Devils, the Challengers’ courageous example along with a duplicitous female double agent of Scorpio convinced the Sponge to save the heroes from a premature death, at the cost of his own life.
Yellow Scorpion and his Japanese organization sought more subtle means to subvert the American government. This scheme was overturned by the Spider and his partner Chuck. Initially, the Scorpion sent his forces into the underground sewer system of a major metropolitan city in order to sabotage its industry from within. Soon after his disaster scheme failed, Yellow Scorpion’s next target was an American battleship which he intended to sink. Sending his henchman Hiakatsu to lead the attack, but was thwarted again by the Spider and Chuck.
