Lamont Cranston and Brian O'Brien were rich men of high society with mysterious pasts and heroic futures. Assuming the suit-and-tie guises of the Shadow and the Clock, these twin Darknight Detectives trailblazed new paths as masked manhunters. Each possessed tremendous will power allowing them to control the minds of weaker men.
Aided by agents in their agenda against their adversaries, chief among those were lady friends Margo Lane and Butch Buchanan and right-hand men Harry Vincent and Pat Brady. While the Shadow in later years, after his career had seemingly concluded, had met the Batman of Earth-One... the Clock encountered the Shade of Earth-Two years after his last public appearence.
Although they both quietly slipped back into their elusive retirement, the legends they left behind linger on until today. There was an implication in Shade's journal that the Clock was the first fatality in a madman's agenda to slay mystery men, the next target being All-Star Squadron member Whip. Whether this happened or not isn't known. Shadow served as an aged advisor of Batman on two separate occasions.
