Each of today's entries were the black sheep of their families. Each a shadowy reflection of the the Green Lanterns of parallel planets.
William Hand was the sole son of a prominent family that turned to crime instead of reputable pursuits like his brother. He was known for a book of cliches to aid him in any situation, supposedly. As the Black Hand, William developed an energy absorbing rod called the Power-Lighr that absorbed the residual emerald energy emitted from the power ring of Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern of Earth-One. Thus began a recurring series of duels between Hand and Jordan, eventually also involving Hal’s Justice League colleague the Flash
Captain Kortz was a German officer and spymaster during World War II who continued to have clashes versus the Alan Scott’s alter ego, the Green Lantern of Earth-Two, and his "Legion of the Lantern”. This Lantern Legion consisted of Scott and his fellow soldiers opposing Nazi forces in the early days of World War II. At one point, in order to infiltrate nomadic society, Kortz donned a black robe and became the nefarious Black Prophet in order to foment schemes.
However, Kortz, continued to be defeated by his heroic foe, as the Nazi didn’t possess his world’s equivalent of the Power-Light. This devise was Doiby Dickles’ Green Signal Rocket, which his pal Green Lantern engineered to absorb emerald energy from his power ring. Both the Power-Light and the Green Signal Rocket designed by Hand and Scott were effective tools yet inferior to the lanterns they siphoned power from throughout the years.
