In ancient Atlantis, on the world known as Earth-One, prior to its devastating destruction when it sank to the sea... there was Atlena.
Scientist/priestess of Atlantis, Atlena devised the means to shift the city's inhabitants into a pocket dimension. which ended up trapping she and other residents of the sea within the Sargasso Sea. It was there where she met her nephew Arthur "Aquaman" Curry, and eventually aided him in defeating her crazed sister and Aquaman's mother, Atlanna. Atlanna and Atlena were like Clea and Atlantea of Earth-Two's Atlantis, powerful political leaders in their respective societies.

The sea king's Earth-Two counterpart never seemed to encounter any of his relatives. Queen Atlantea had herself ruled over the ancient continent of Atlantis of Earth-Two at the same time as Atlena and Atlanna, although Atlantea's disposition was like that of her own counterpart Atlena's. Atlantea would meet a time traveling Green Lantern just before her home was seemingly destroyed, while attempting to subdue the hero. Instead, Atlantea lost her life as her monarchy sank. Her descendant, Eerus, would be a far more noble queen of Atlantis as would Mera, former queen of Dimension Aqua and wife of Earth-One's Aquaman.
On Earth-One, the dual cities of Poseidonis and Tritonis which comprised most of modern day Atlantis adapted to being submerged centuries ago under the seas, as the inhabitants became water breathers due to a serum developed by Atlanna. However, Earth-Two's Atlantis which consisted of Venturia and Aurania was protected due to an artificial environment of underground caverns, although inhabitants of that ancient land mutated in a different way. The women became taller and stronger in will and physique while the men were smaller and more subservient.

In the generations to follow there would be other fabulous females and their male compatriots of both worlds' Atlantis. There was Atlena's sister Atlanna, who had herself gained immortality as a side effect from the serum that transformed her people into water-breathers... and Atlanna's doppleganger Clea... both of whom were blonde haired queens of the Poseidonis and Aurania who grew mad and turned to evil to facilitate their obsession for control. Meanwhile, noble Athlena was exiled in another dimension for centuries while her counterpart Atlantea's descendant Althea was eternally exiled in the secluded Sargasso Sea (when she encountered the Earth-Two Wonder Woman).
In addition, Tula of the Royal Family of Poseidonis adopted the alias of Earth-One's Aquagirl for a tragic career in heroics, while Empress Lanya at Earth-Two's Aurania remained on her undersea throne.Aquagirl would become an honorary member of the Teen Titans alongside her boyfriend Garth, aka Aqualad. Lanya was the object of Robin's affection when he and Batman journeyed to her kingdom to defeat Nazi's allied with her brother Emperor Toro, counterpart to Aquaboy aka Arthur Curry Jr. By replacing Toro with his lookalike, Robin helped free that city from the Germans' influence.
Then there were the superhumanly strong Dolphin and Octavia, two heroines who joined surface world allies of occasion. And of course, the Sea Kings who would carve legends that would become the Aquamen... and the true Queens of the Sea in Mera and Eeras. They deserve their own entry which will delve into these sultry sovereigns of the seven seas.
