One day renowned professionals in their select fields. The next day, mental masterminds, thanks to mysterious alien rocks that imbue them with tremendous temporal traits. Geologist Kenneth Anderson and relic hunter Kirk Jason were two such men, living in Gotham City when they suddenly gained these grand gifts, which one used for good and the other for evil.
Anderson discovered an unusual rock, perhaps a meteorite, which when he experiments on it bestows upon the geologist tremendous mental powers. Transforming into the Annihilator, he retaliates against a city he feels fails to appreciate him. This attracts the attention of first Batgirl and then Supergirl, visiting the city on a interview tour for her alter ego's new show. Defeating the Girl of Steel and acquiring her power, he sought to transform Batgirl into his own mutated bride, but the gals double teamed on the madman and reversed his condition.
Jason one day awoke having discovered a piece of an ancient meteorite, which had previously been possessed by various men for untold centuries. Each was given cerebral capabilities such as telepathic and telekinetic which as the Immortal Man they used for justice.
To that end, they would repeatedly come into conflict with their immortal adversary Vandal Savage, himself gaining an extended life span thanks to the same meteorite. Kirk, like his predecessors, gained the memories of his fore bearers. He also felt love for Helen Phelps, who had become acquainted with two previous Immortal Men. And like those individuals, Jason Kirk gave his life to save humanity from a threat to its safety, in this instance a gigantic subterranean beast.
Another pair of mental menaces whom the ladies battled continually were Doctor Voodoo and his evil mentor, and Doctor Tarr with his conspirator the Undertaker. While using medication to endure paranoid illusions upon Batgirl and Huntress, respectively, they ultimately were also defeated.
But there were other mind masters of Gotham City contemporaneous to these two. Perhaps the most threatening due not only do to their mental resources, but also do to their agenda against caped crusaders, were Captain Calamity aka Mister Esper and District Attorney Harry Sims.
Mister Esper was a con man who had devised a super sonic whisper device that could induce his victims into following his every suggestion. With this technique at his disposal, Esper even temporarily stymied Batman and Robin in their attempts to defeat is ill-gotten ways. Nevertheless, the Dynamic Duo was successful in circumventing this, although Esper returned when he was employed by a Syndicate to finish the Batman. However, Esper manipulated various enemies of the Dark Knight into protecting the hero and his sidekick, and later made another play versus the pair which ultimately led to defeat. Years later, as Captain Calamity, Esper was able to tap into the mental abilities of the young heroine known as Lilith and with these new found powers battled the Teen Titans.
Harry Sims as district attorney of Gotham City sought to remove from his hometown all superheroes whose vigilante actions caused his own authority to be in disrepute. Coerced behind the scenes by the Flash's old foe, the Thinker, Sims learned the folly of his partnership with the criminal when he discovered that the Huntress' alter ego was his colleague Helena Wayne.
Seeing Sims as a liability, the Thinker mentally induced the D.A. with a heart attack and assumed his identity to legally carry out his agenda. As a former district attorney in his Cliff Devoe identity decades previous, the Thinker could call upon such training in this field to achieve his ends. Meanwhile, the Thinker mentally controlled Power Girl and sent her against her best friend, leaving Huntress to deflate the criminal's plans by destroying his powerful helmet. And Sims fell in love with his dual-identity daring damsel.
interestingly, this same cerebral device utilized by these Gotham villains was also developed and employed by Owlman, the counterpart of the Batmen of Earth-Three. He also used it for evil in his own Gotham City, before first Earth-One's Batman and later Earth-Two's Huntress defeated him.
