Mekt Ranzz was a native of the world known as Winath-One, when he and his younger twin siblings were stranded on the planet Korbal-One. Seeking to lure lightning beasts to attack their space craft and recharge it in order to return home, the trio ended up bathed in the discharge instead and gained electrical powers as a result. Adopting the criminal of Lightning Lord, Mekt menaced the twins Garth aka Lightning Lad and Ayla aka Lightning Lass as a member of the Legion of Super-Villains, which often battled the twins' team the Legion of Super-Heroes on the Earth-One of the 30th century.
His counterpart in the 20th century of Earth-One was known as the Lord of Life, a scientist who devised the means of seemingly slaying his prey with specialized drugs that placed his victims in a coma. Then the Lord would "resurrect" them with his electrical discharge equipment he labeled the Ray of Life. For a time, he duped Doctor Occult into working for him by seemingly killing him, until that hero discovered the truth and defeated him. This mirrored when Garth Ranzz was in a death-like coma and was revived through a similar process. As for the self styled Lord of Life, his own servants eventually returned the favor that he has subjected them to, when they took his own life.
