Scientist Terrance Curtis was a researcher in atomic energy during the early days of World War II. Due to his research, he and his infant daughter Terri were irradiated, while his wife died from radiation poisoning. His condition and that of Terri's was stabilized due to the technology of the villain Ultra-Humanite, whom Curtis had a brief romance with before her betrayal. As a result, he gained superhuman strength along with the power of flight and energy blasts of varying effects. This led to Curtis adopting the alter ego of Cyclotron and becoming a reluctant henchman in Ultra's schemes versus Superman of Earth-Two and his All-Star Squadron allies, even assisting her in gaining mental powers. After several confrontation, the noble example of Superman coupled with his love for his daughter caused Cyclotron to drag Ultra up into the sky to destroy them both. However, Curtis would return during the Crisis on Infinite Earths due to a temporal anomaly and save his adult daughter from an Ultra-Ape.
There were several parallels between these two tragic anti-heroes. These mustached genius-level intellects, their energized bodies were powerful enough to have might to match that of a Kryptonian, had wives who tragically perished, loved corrupt women and then red-headed super-heroines. They were easily manipulated by malevolent masterminds but in the end stood alongside their respective worlds' Supermen in combating evil.
