Cliff Carmichael was a creep on both Earths One and Two. And he… they… became a thorn in the side of energized heroes in their respective worlds.
On Earth-One, Cliff was a high school student who often bullied classmate Ronald Raymond. When an accident occurred at a nuclear energy plant operated by Professor Martin Stein where Raymond was trapped within during a protest, the pair gained superhuman powers and merged to become Firestorm. As a result, this gave Ronnie a level of confidence when dealing with Cliff, who also became an easy target for Raymond's heroic alter ego.

On Earth-Two, Cliff was an assistant of Professor Styne, operating his boss' strato-balloon. When the vessel was caught in an electrical storm as they ascended into the upper atmosphere. This caused Carmichael and reporter Langford "Happy" Terrill, whom he was at odds with, to become irradiated with the same mysterious energy, transforming Happy into the light generating Ray, and Cliff into the shadow emitting Dark.
While the Ray had a long heroic career, the Dark disappeared and apparently was manipulated by the villain known as the Shade, who eventually brought Carmichael to Earth-One during a clash with that world's Flash. When the Ray journeyed to that same world, the Dark was awoken and drawn to his nemesis. Yet before the Dark could attack his opposite number, he soon disappeared around the time that the Shade returned to Earth-One.
