The 30th century saw a revitalization of powerful protectors with a plethora joining the teenage team known as the Legion of Super-Heroes. However, not all who applied merged membership into the group. These include cold-generating Brek "Polar Boy" Bannin, flame-breathing Staq "Fire Lad" Mavlen, plant-growing Ral "Chlorophyll Kid" Benem, grantite-transforming Dag "Stone Boy" Wentim, and darkness powerhouse Lydia "Night Girl" Jath. While not qualified to serve alongside the established Legion, each were awarded flight belts for their trouble. Motivated to make a difference, Polar Boy encourage his fellow failures into forming a successful super-team. As the Legion of Substitute-Heroes, they secretly protected Earth-One when the original Legion could not.
The preeminent Space Legion of 30th century to protect Earth-Two. While the Legion dealt with threats coming from outside their homeworld, the Defenders had more localized threats. Among the winged Defenders were Hald, Jon, Jak, and Karles... each of whom encounters time traveling Justice Society members from about a thousand years earlier. Although not successful in incarcerating these mystery men whom they suspected were criminals, they persisted in their protecting their fellow man as best they could. The counterpart of Lydda never herself joined this team, preferring like Jath to foster romance.
Other Substitutes would be join over time such as Ulu "Color Kid" Vakk and less adept youths. They served to support the main Legion as well as the Science Police, Legion Academy and others, Jair as the Defenders operated concurrent with the Space Legion, Super Police, Junior Federal men and others.
