Professor Ira West and Professor Ezra Gill were both genius educators, and more importantly, excellent father figures. And their influence was especially needed in the lives of the young men whom they mentored, as these lads would gain superhuman speed and each needed guiding hands in their costumed careers.
Ira was approached by Barry Allen, his future son-in-law, who explained to him he'd gained his powers and needed help to develop a costumed he could wear while using them. West created an expanding fabric and ring which had a special gas, allowing the suit to fit within it until Barry needed it to wear, at which point it grew. Soon after this, Ira experienced a concussion on lost his memory of Barry's Flash alter ego, until years later. He was also grandfather to Wally "Kid Flash" West.
Ezra was the guardian of Johnny Chambers, and as a mathematician he discovered the secret to superspeed through an ancient Egyptian formula found on a papyrus, which he bequeathed to Johnny. However, soon afterwards, Gill experienced a heartattack and passed away, although he would live to see Chambers adopt the costumed alias of Johnny Quick.
