Katar and Shayera Hol were originally police officers from the planet of Thanagar, who had been tasked with journeying to Earth-One and learn the law enforcement techniques of that world. Soon after starting their dual careers as masked superheroes as well as a museum curator and his assistant, the pair as Carter and Shiera Hall established a solid reputation as the crime-fighting duo of Hawkman and Hawkgirl. This led to Katar being invited to join the Justice League of America, with his wife joining years later.
Just a few months prior to this, a renowned physicist in the field of light studies named Bruce Gordon while on the island of Diablo during a solar eclipse, encountered a local self-made "seer" named Mophir. This madman attacked Doctor Gordon, scratching him with a black diamond, before plunging off a cliff. The lasting effects of this on Bruce was an infection, caused by this alien meteorite fragment, which unleashed an evil version of himself that took control during any eclipse. As the supervillian known as Eclipso, Gordon's malevolent alter ego tried several times to unleash sinister schemes upon humanity. Yet each time, Bruce along with his girlfriend Mona and her father Professor Simon Bennett, thwarted the plans of Eclipso time and again.
After several attempts to purge himself once and for all of the corrupted version of himself, Doctor Gordon along with lab assistant John "Red Tornado" Smith, used a machine that seemingly accomplished this. In fact, it unleashed three temporary clones of Eclipso which would cause irreputable harm upon Earth-One if left unchecked. Red Tornado brought Bruce to the JLA Satellite to enlist the aid of the android's Justice League companions, including Hawkman... who himself was about to resign from the League and return with Shayera to Thanagar. On this occasion, Katar met Bruce, not knowing that this man.. designer of the Solar City... could have been his son! Thankfully, the League destroyed this incarnation of Eclipso.
Utilizing the nth metal along with his solar refinements, Hector created the alias of Silver Scarab, and alongside his girlfriend Lyta "Fury" Trevor as well as other children and wards of the Justice Society, attempted to join that team. This brought the young heroes into conflict with their older contemporaries when they entered the Society's headquarters. While being rejected for membership, with his father Carter giving the deciding votes, Hector and his friends formed another team known as Infinity, Inc. However, Hec's time with this group would be shortlived, as an alien metal crafted dagger infected him, unleashing an evil alter ego of a new Silver Scarab. This Scarab battled Hector's old friends, and was ultimately destroyed with the real Hector Hall returning later to marry Lyta.
