Both men were driven towards their pursuit of clean energy, using their knowledge as physicists to develop revoluntary solar based technology. Sadly, their dreams of seeing their creations benefit humanity were quashed by their wicked aliases for which they each succumbed to from time to time. These were brought forth from within each man by a black diamond and a crystal dagger made from alien meteorite fragments that infected them when cut by them.
For Bruce Gordon, the effect was immediate, as he adopted the garb of the man who first attacked him with the black diamond, Mophir. Now under the identity of Eclipso, this villian made a number of notable enemies in his pursuit towards fulfilling his insatiable greed. Among these was Batman and later his allies in the Justice League of America, who were enlisted by Gordon himself when he and his evil Eclipso side were split in half. After this battle, Eclipso was seemingly destroyed forever.
However, when Gordon was hired by Ferris Aircraft to construct for them a solar jet, Eclipso resurfaced. This time, the rogue battled Green Lantern, who's alter ego Hal Jordan was employed with Ferris as a test pilot. Although Jordan defeated him, Eclipso returned shortly thereafter to seek revenged. On this occasion, he battled the next Green Lantern who succeeded Jordan, John Stewart. Once more, it appeared as if Eclipso was disintegrated by his own devices, freeing Gordon.
Shortly thereafter, Hawkman along with four other fellow Socialites became corrupted by the influence of the Stream of Ruthlessness. Each JSA member sought to fulfill their own greedy desires, which brought them into conflict with Scarab and his fellow Infinity, Inc. teammates. This included Green Lantern, who in his insidous state battled Scarab nearly to a standstill using their light-based powers. Similarly, Lantern faced the darkness-enduced powers of Alan Scott's son Todd "Obsidian" Rice and his daughter Jennie Lynn "Jade" Hayden. These youths in Infinity, Inc. were able to keep the sinister Society preoccupied long enough to regain their senses, and turn the table on the mastermind behind this scheme in the Ultra-Humanity. Peace was restored between the twin teams of superheroes.
However, the alien crystal dagger was later used by the descendant of Carter Hall's old adversary, Anton Hastor, to cut his son Hector. This infection unleashed his adversarial alias of a new Silver Scarab, one which nearly battled Infinity, Inc. to a standstill. It seemed after this conflict that Scarab and Hector had both perished, however Hall was later revived and restored.
