For their fourth outing together, one of their first mutual menaces manipulated matters masterfully across the Multiverse, leading to a grand game of misdirection for the Scarlet Speedsters before the true culprit came out of the shadows and into the light of truth. When Barry Allen finally found the perfect ring for his bride-to-be, he just as quickly lost it to a mysterious shadow that consumed it. And this wasn't a solitary event, as other valulable objects began disappearing from Central City in much the same manner. Not realizing what caused their strange phenomenon, Barry did discover a solution to the missing ring problem... a parallel one must exist on Earth-Two, just like the meteorite in the Arizona desert which his counterpart Jay Garrick had sought out a few months earlier. However, upon traveling there, he learned that Jay's wife Joan was wearing her world's version of the ring, hence he was back where he started. Returning to Earth-One to face various dark threats, he soon learned that all these things were connected... to a man known as Shade!
The Shade had recently been released from prison in Keystone City for good behavior, or so they were led to believe. Turns out, he was shadowing the Flash of his world, and stumbled upon his foe's secret metho of traveling between worlds. Matching the vibrations with his ebony cane, the Shade discovered a dark zone with its own residents whom he could manipulate to do his bidding, stealing various items on Earth-One allowing him to live in wealth on Earth-Two. However, despite his enacting a trap which ensnared Jay-Flash, and an aura which protected him from Barry-Flash, it was his own vanity which allowed Barry to catch the crook... when the Flash coated himself with valuable gold. Drawn into the Shade's pocket dimension, he was able to defeat the villain and free his pal Jay... and regain the missing ring for his precious Iris!
