Michael Maxwell was a zoologist from the United States who migrated to the Africa of Earth-One to begin his professional life. After his plane crashed in route to his new home, he was revived by a mysterious liquid by an intelligent red ape known as Djuba, which gave him superhuman strength and speed, Maxwell was also bequeathed by the creature with an ancient helmet, which allowed him to combine and control two animals into various variations of beasts.
Assuming the alter ego of B'wana Beast, Maxwell and his pal police commissoner Rupert Kenboya twice faced the criminal mastermind Hamid Ali. Who possessed the helmet he wore centuries earlier when it was created is unknown, but suggests a heroic legacy he had inherited. B'wana Beast reappeared during the Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Tod Hunter was known as the Jungle Master. As a world traveler originating from America, he sought the legendary red ruby alongside his partner Tommy Withers. During this adventure he accessed gadgetry allowing him to appear as an imposing statue to unnerve his opponents.
During the course of his adventures, Hunter used his apt abilities to stave off the attack of a gorilla and other dangers he faced in the brush. Despite not displaying superhuman powers, he had an adaptable aptitude in the face of danger versus Priestess Zara. A few years later. Zara would resurface as a foe of Wonder Woman as the Priestess of the Crimson Flame!
