The Puzzler was one of the most prominent early foes of the original Superman, counted among the Man of Steel's most persistent of enemies. A highly competitive man of seemingly limitless resources, the Puzzler would engage in various table top and board games with champions of those respective contests. When he found that his skills failed to measure up to his competitor, he would cheat to win. When he kidnapped Lois Lane of the Daily Star, Puzzler drew the attention of Superman who outwitted the villain. There would be a rematch a year later, and yet again the Puzzler ended up on the losing end of the battle, although he earn his notoriety as a peer aming other Superman rogues as Alexei Luther, Ultra-Humanite, Prankster and Metalo.
Eventually it was revealed that the modern Superman also clashed with his own version of the Puzzler when videotape recording of a battle between the two was revealed during a meeting of the Jimmy Olson Fan Club. It seems this Puzzler's career was even briefer than that of his counterpart. Using trick cards, this Puzzler was a more hands on foe, yet each relied on gimmicks in their schemes.
What became of this bad sports is unknown, although it seems that they both realized that they couldn’t compete with their superior opponents or fellow career criminals.
