Amidst the wide variety of meta-humans existing on Earths One and Two, Doctor Lovecraft and his cosmic twin Doctor Love, carved a niche for themselves as master geneticists specializing in human/animal hybrids.
Doctor Lovecraft was financed by industrialist Rex Rogan, who attempted to resurrected he bankrupt company Repli-Tech by exploiting the research of his prized scientist on staff. Lovecraft used his research to transform Rogan and other members of the company's board of directors into Ani-Men, with the organization now being used as a front to host gladitorial competitions. Among the hybrid-humans concocted by Lovecraft were a lion-man, cat-woman, rhino-man, snake-man, bird-man, whale-man, among others. Their operations were uncovered by the Justice League of Earth-One
Doctor Love had perhaps been inspired by Ivan Caroff who decades earlier utilized his father's research to spawn mutated manimal men. These cunning criminal creatures included a panther-man and wolf-man, while Caroff transformed Starman into a lion-man and himself into a pig-man. When Caroff's sinister schemes were thwarted by the Justice Society member Starman, his research was seemingly lost. Perhaps it was uncovered by Doctor Love in the mid-1960s, as he used his unnatural techniques to mutate several infants, some of whom became canine, feline and shark hybrid-humans.
Eventually, these youths (aside from cousins Yolanda "Wildcat" Montez and Carcharro, raised separately of their genetic "kin") temporarily broke free of the Doctor's grasp, and formed the supervillain team known as Helix modeled after the Justice Society of Earth-Two. The children of the Society, known as Infinity, Inc.were embroiled in a series of battles with Helix when the malicious mutants kidnapped one of the Infinitors, Lyta "Fury" Trevor, holding her for ransom.
Rogan and the Ani-Men ended up transforming fully into mindless animals, whch the Justice League were unable to return to normal even with access to Lovecraft's notes. Caroff himself perished while all his animal-men and Starman reverted to normal humans once more.
As for Helix, they survived and was once more brought under the sway of Doctor Love, while his doppleganger Doctor Lovecraft ended up nearly killed by his creations and presumably taken into custody for his illegal endeavors. The members of Helix had corresponding counterparts who were all adversaries of Firestorm, the Nuclear Man of Earth-One, themelves each altered by science making each of them more than human.
